제1독서

<바위에서 많은 물이 터져 나왔다.>

 민수기 20,1-13
그 무렵 1 이스라엘 자손들, 곧 온 공동체는 친 광야에 이르렀다.
그리하여 백성은 카데스에 자리를 잡았다.
그곳에서 미르얌이 죽어 거기에 묻혔다.
2 공동체에게 마실 물이 없었다. 그래서 그들은 모세와 아론에게 몰려갔다.
3 백성은 모세와 시비하면서 말하였다.
“아, 우리 형제들이 주님 앞에서 죽을 때에 우리도 죽었더라면!
4 어쩌자고 당신들은 주님의 공동체를 이 광야로 끌고 와서,
우리와 우리 가축을 여기에서 죽게 하시오?
5 어쩌자고 당신들은 우리를 이집트에서 올라오게 하여
이 고약한 곳으로 데려왔소?
여기는 곡식도 무화과도 포도도 석류도 자랄 곳이 못 되오. 마실 물도 없소.”
6 모세와 아론은 공동체 앞을 떠나 만남의 천막 어귀로 가서,
얼굴을 땅에 대고 엎드렸다. 그러자 주님의 영광이 그들에게 나타났다.
7 주님께서 모세에게 이르셨다.
8 “너는 지팡이를 집어 들고, 너의 형 아론과 함께 공동체를 불러 모아라.
그런 다음에 그들이 보는 앞에서 저 바위더러 물을 내라고 명령하여라.
이렇게 너는 바위에서 물이 나오게 하여,
공동체와 그들의 가축이 마시게 하여라.”
9 모세는 주님께서 명령하신 대로 주님 앞에 있는 지팡이를 집어 들었다.
10 모세가 아론과 함께 공동체를 바위 앞에 불러 모은 다음,
그들에게 말하였다.
“이 반항자들아, 들어라.
우리가 이 바위에서 너희가 마실 물을 나오게 해 주랴?”
11 그러고 나서 모세가 손을 들어 지팡이로 그 바위를 두 번 치자,
많은 물이 터져 나왔다.
공동체와 그들의 가축이 물을 마셨다.
12 주님께서 모세와 아론에게 말씀하셨다.
“너희는 나를 믿지 않아 이스라엘 자손들이 보는 앞에서
나의 거룩함을 드러내지 않았다.
그러므로 너희는 내가 이 공동체에게 주는 땅으로
그들을 데리고 가지 못할 것이다.”
13 이것이 이스라엘 자손들이 주님과 시비한 므리바의 물이다.
주님께서는 이 물로 당신의 거룩함을 드러내셨다.
 

복음

<너는 베드로이다. 나는 너에게 하늘 나라의 열쇠를 주겠다.>

마태오. 16,13-23
13 예수님께서 카이사리아 필리피 지방에 다다르시자 제자들에게,

“사람의 아들을 누구라고들 하느냐?” 하고 물으셨다.
14 제자들이 대답하였다.
“세례자 요한이라고 합니다.
그러나 어떤 이들은 엘리야라 하고,
또 어떤 이들은 예레미야나 예언자 가운데 한 분이라고 합니다.”
15 예수님께서 “그러면 너희는 나를 누구라고 하느냐?” 하고 물으시자,
16 시몬 베드로가 “스승님은 살아 계신
하느님의 아드님 그리스도이십니다.” 하고 대답하였다.
17 그러자 예수님께서 그에게 이르셨다.
“시몬 바르요나야, 너는 행복하다!
살과 피가 아니라 하늘에 계신 내 아버지께서
그것을 너에게 알려 주셨기 때문이다.
18 나 또한 너에게 말한다. 너는 베드로이다.
내가 이 반석 위에 내 교회를 세울 터인즉,
저승의 세력도 그것을 이기지 못할 것이다.
19 또 나는 너에게 하늘 나라의 열쇠를 주겠다.
그러니 네가 무엇이든지 땅에서 매면 하늘에서도 매일 것이고,
네가 무엇이든지 땅에서 풀면 하늘에서도 풀릴 것이다.”
20 그런 다음 제자들에게, 당신이 그리스도라는 것을
아무에게도 말하지 말라고 분부하셨다.
21 그때부터 예수님께서는 당신이 반드시 예루살렘에 가시어
원로들과 수석 사제들과 율법 학자들에게 많은 고난을 받고
죽임을 당하셨다가 사흗날에 되살아나셔야 한다는 것을
제자들에게 밝히기 시작하셨다.
22 그러자 베드로가 예수님을 꼭 붙들고 반박하기 시작하였다.
“맙소사, 주님! 그런 일은 주님께 결코 일어나지 않을 것입니다.”
23 그러나 예수님께서는 돌아서서 베드로에게 말씀하셨다.
“사탄아, 내게서 물러가라. 너는 나에게 걸림돌이다.
너는 하느님의 일은 생각하지 않고 사람의 일만 생각하는구나!”

Reading 1

Nm 20:1-13
The whole congregation of the children of Israel
 arrived in the desert of Zin in the first month, 
 and the people settled at Kadesh.
It was here that Miriam died, and here that she was buried.

As the community had no water,
they held a council against Moses and Aaron. 
The people contended with Moses, exclaiming,
“Would that we too had perished with our kinsmen in the Lord’s presence!
Why have you brought the LORD’s assembly into this desert
where we and our livestock are dying?
Why did you lead us out of Egypt,
only to bring us to this wretched place
which has neither grain nor figs nor vines nor pomegranates?
Here there is not even water to drink!”
But Moses and Aaron went away from the assembly
to the entrance of the meeting tent, where they fell prostrate.

Then the glory of the LORD appeared to them,
and the LORD said to Moses,
“Take your staff and assemble the community,
you and your brother Aaron,
and in their presence order the rock to yield its waters.
From the rock you shall bring forth water for the congregation
and their livestock to drink.”
So Moses took his staff from its place before the LORD, as he was ordered. 
He and Aaron assembled the community in front of the rock,
where he said to them, “Listen to me, you rebels!
Are we to bring water for you out of this rock?”
Then, raising his hand, Moses struck the rock twice with his staff,
and water gushed out in abundance for the people
and their livestock to drink.
But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron,
“Because you were not faithful to me
in showing forth my sanctity before the children of Israel,
you shall not lead this community into the land I will give them.”

These are the waters of Meribah,
where the children of Israel contended against the Lord,
and where the LORD revealed his sanctity among them.

Gospel

Mt16:13-23

Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi
and he asked his disciples,
“Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”
They replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah,
still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
Simon Peter said in reply,
“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah.
For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.
And so I say to you, you are Peter,
and upon this rock I will build my Church,
and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.
I will give you the keys to the Kingdom of heaven.
Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven;
and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
Then he strictly ordered his disciples
to tell no one that he was the Christ.

From that time on, Jesus began to show his disciples
that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer greatly
from the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes,
and be killed and on the third day be raised.
Then Peter took Jesus aside and began to rebuke him,
“God forbid, Lord! No such thing shall ever happen to you.”
He turned and said to Peter,
“Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle to me.
You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.”

 As I read today’s gospel, metaphors swam in my head -- “solid as a rock,” “like a rock,” “rock solid,” “rock steady.” It makes sense that Jesus would use this language.  A rock is something that affords a sure support, it is reliable, strong, unlikely to break. Jesus knew the Church that was being built on earth would have to have this durable and robust foundation. 

And yet while this image is being conjured up, in almost the same breath, we are reminded of Peter’s limitations as he is reproached for his reaction to the foretelling of Jesus' suffering. Jesus gives Peter the mission of being the rock upon which to build the Church, but profoundly understands our limitations in understanding the mysteries of our faith. While the foundation for the Church is strong, there are many frailties in our humanness. The atrocities committed in Catholic schools in Canada against indigenous youth is one such example of our poverty of spirit. 

Today’s Gospel is reminding us of how deceptive it can be to get caught up in putting man over God. It is cautioning us that even those with deep faith can get it wrong sometimes. Strengthening the Church requires us to stand up and speak out when this happens. In doing this we reinforce the backbone commandment of the Church -- to love one another. Today, let’s pray that we love our Church enough to act when its foundation gets marred by human foolishness. Let’s stand up as Jesus did to the scribes and chief priests and be courageous enough in our faith to be inclusive and loving. This is the cornerstone of the Church. Let’s do everything we can to keep this rock solid.

INFINITE MERCY

“The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, ‘Because you were not faithful to Me in showing forth My sanctity before the Israelites, you shall not lead this community into the land.’ ” —Numbers 20:12

Moses either struck the rock one too many times or had a bad attitude or said the wrong thing. Somehow, he did not show forth God’s sanctity in bringing forth water from the rock. This kept Moses from entering the promised land.

Thank God we live in the New Testament, in the season of God’s mercy. We hope we will never sin again, but “if anyone should sin, we have, in the presence of the Father, Jesus Christ, an Intercessor Who is just. He is an Offering for our sins, and not for our sins only, but for those of the whole world” (1 Jn 2:1-2).

We know that the Lord will forgive even the worst sinners seventy times seven (Mt 18:22). We should not use this as an excuse to sin, but it’s good to know that no sins are too many or too bad for the Lord to forgive, if only we repent. “You can depend on this as worthy of full acceptance: that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” (1 Tm 1:15).

Moses didn’t get a second chance to enter the promised land. However, we are given hundreds, even thousands of chances to enter the ultimate promised land of heaven. Lord, have mercy!

Prayer:  Merciful Father, thank You for forgiving me when I wouldn’t even forgive myself.

Promise:  “I for My part declare to you, you are ‘Rock,’ and on this rock I will build My Church, and the jaws of death shall not prevail against it.” —Mt 16:18

Praise:  Mary Jane was once ashamed of her first name and used just her middle name, but now rejoices in Jesus’ mother as her patron saint.

  How firm is your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ? At an opportune time Jesus tested his disciples with a crucial question: Who do men say that I am and who do you say that I am? (Matthew 16:13). Jesus was widely recognized in Israel as a mighty man of God, even being compared with the greatest of the prophets, John the Baptist, Elijah, and Jeremiah. Peter, always quick to respond, exclaimed that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of the living God.

Through the gift of faith Peter recognized that Jesus was the "anointed one" (in Hebrew and Greek the word is translated as Messiah and Christ), and the only begotten Son of God sent by the Father in heaven to redeem a fallen human race. No mortal being could have revealed this to Peter; but only God. Jesus then conferred on Peter authority to govern the church that Jesus would build, a church that no powers could overcome. Jesus played on Peter's name which is the same word for "rock" in both Aramaic and Greek.

Spiritual rock ad living stones
To call someone a "rock" is one of the greatest of compliments. The ancient rabbis had a saying that when God saw Abraham, he exclaimed: "I have discovered a rock to found the world upon." Abraham put his trust in God and made God's word the foundation of his life and the bedrock of his faith. Through Abraham God established a nation for himself. Through faith Peter grasped who Jesus truly was. He was the first apostle to proclaim that Jesus was truly the Anointed One (Messiah and Christ) and the only begotten Son of God.

The New Testament describes the church, the people of God, as a spiritual house and temple of the Holy Spirit with each member joined together as living stones (see 1 Peter 2:5). Faith in Jesus Christ makes us into rocks - spiritual stones. The Lord Jesus tests each of us personally with the same question: Who do you say that I am?

Lord Jesus, I profess and believe that you are the Christ, the Son of the living God. You are my Lord and my Savior who has set me free from sin and deception. Make my faith strong like the Apostles Peter and Paul and give me boldness to speak of you to others that they may come to know you as Lord and Savior.

Psalm 19:2-5
