Reading 1
Ex 32:15-24, 30-34
Moses turned and came down the mountain
with the two tablets of the commandments in his hands,
tablets that were written on both sides, front and back;
tablets that were made by God,
having inscriptions on them that were engraved by God himself.
Now, when Joshua heard the noise of the people shouting,
he said to Moses, “That sounds like a battle in the camp.”
But Moses answered, “It does not sound like cries of victory,
nor does it sound like cries of defeat;
the sounds that I hear are cries of revelry.”
As he drew near the camp, he saw the calf and the dancing.
With that, Moses’ wrath flared up, so that he threw the tablets down
and broke them on the base of the mountain.
Taking the calf they had made, he fused it in the fire
and then ground it down to powder,
which he scattered on the water and made the children of Israel drink.

Moses asked Aaron, “What did this people ever do to you
that you should lead them into so grave a sin?”
Aaron replied, “Let not my lord be angry.
You know well enough how prone the people are to evil.
They said to me, 'Make us a god to be our leader;
as for the man Moses who brought us out of the land of Egypt ,
we do not know what has happened to him.’
So I told them, 'Let anyone who has gold jewelry take it off.’
They gave it to me, and I threw it into the fire, and this calf came out.”

On the next day Moses said to the people,
“You have committed a grave sin.
I will go up to the LORD, then;
perhaps I may be able to make atonement for your sin.”
So Moses went back to the LORD and said,
“Ah, this people has indeed committed a grave sin
in making a god of gold for themselves!
If you would only forgive their sin!
If you will not, then strike me out of the book that you have written.”
The LORD answered, “Him only who has sinned against me
will I strike out of my book.
Now, go and lead the people to the place I have told you.
My angel will go before you.
When it is time for me to punish, I will punish them for their sin.”

Responsorial Psalm
Ps 106:19-20, 21-22, 23
R. (1a) Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.
Our fathers made a calf in Horeb
and adored a molten image;
They exchanged their glory
for the image of a grass-eating bullock.
R. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.
They forgot the God who had saved them,
who had done great deeds in Egypt ,
Wondrous deeds in the land of Ham ,
terrible things at the Red Sea .
R. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.
Then he spoke of exterminating them,
but Moses, his chosen one ,
Withstood him in the breach
to turn back his destructive wrath.
R. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.

Gospel
Mt 13:31-35
Jesus proposed a parable to the crowds.
“The Kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed
that a person took and sowed in a field.
It is the smallest of all the seeds,
yet when full-grown it is the largest of plants.
It becomes a large bush,
and the birds of the sky come and dwell in its branches.”

He  spoke to them another parable.
“The Kingdom of heaven is like yeast
that a woman took and mixed with three measures of wheat flour
until the whole batch was leavened.”

All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables.
He spoke to them only in parables,
to fulfill what had been said through the prophet:

I will open my mouth in parables,
I will announce what has lain hidden from the foundation of the world.

In today’s gospel Jesus explains how little things can mean a lot. The littlest thing can make a big difference. The mustard seed is tiny, but the plant is huge. It's like a tree. It seems impossible that something so small and seemingly insignificant can have such an amazing result. The tiny seed results in a plant that gives shade and where birds can roost. The woman adds a little bit of yeast into the flour, and it expands exponentially. That little bit of yeast lets the dough rise and gives us tasty bread.

And this is like the Kingdom of God. It started with something small, something that at the time seemed like nothing. Jesus came into the world as a baby. He was not rich or powerful. He did not look like a king, but from this inauspicious beginning came the faith we follow to this day. And we can continue to create the kingdom of God ourselves.  Our kindness, concern, prayers can make a difference. A word, an action, an act of charity, some little thing, can have a big effect. Some small activity, some little deed, can turn someone to the Lord. It seems amazing that something so small can have such an amazing result. But like the mustard seed, like the yeast, little things can have big effects. And it's up to all of us to be good role models, be good examples, so we can be good stewards. We don't know whose lives we might touch and what effect we might have.

FIGHT FORFEIT

“It does not sound like cries of victory, nor does it sound like cries of defeat; the sounds that I hear are cries of revelry.” —Exodus 32:18

Moses was so angry, he smashed the tablets of the ten commandments by throwing them down at the base of the mountain. He was mad not because the chosen people were defeated in battle but defeated without battle. We too can lose because we’re too apathetic to fight. We try to skip the battle not because we’re “peace lovers” but “fun lovers.” We forget about winning because of our sinning.

When we fight against the evil one and persevere in the battle, we can’t lose because Jesus has already won the victory (Heb 10:12-13). That’s why Satan’s primary tactic against us is to get us to forfeit. Satan tells us there is no Satan. If we believe that, he tells us there is no battle. We won’t fight if we think there’s no war. But if there’s no war, then why are there so many casualties?

The truth is, Satan is a liar, robber, and murderer. We have the power to quickly crush Satan under our feet (Rm 16:20). We must obey Jesus, the Truth, and fight Satan, the father of lies (Jn 8:44). Fight; never forfeit.

Prayer:  Father, use me to fight the evil one’s works of abortion, pornography, denominations, racism, starvation, terrorism, and militarism.

Promise:  “The reign of God is like a mustard seed which someone took and sowed in his field. It is the smallest seed of all, yet when full-grown it is the largest of plants. It becomes so big a shrub that the birds of the sky come and build their nests in its branches.” —Mt 13:31-32

Praise:  St. Joachim and St. Anne dedicated their daughter to God. They were rewarded by becoming the grandparents of the Son of God!

What can mustard seeds and leaven teach us about the kingdom of God? The tiny mustard seed literally grew to be a tree which attracted numerous birds because they loved the little black mustard seed it produced. God's kingdom works in a similar fashion. It starts from the smallest beginnings in the hearts of men and women who are receptive to God's word. And it works unseen and causes a transformation from within.

Hidden power of transforming seeds and leaven
Leaven is another powerful agent of change. A lump of dough left to itself remains just what it is, a lump of dough. But when the leaven is added to it a transformation takes place which produces rich and wholesome bread when heated - the staple of life for humans.

God's word has power to transforms us
The kingdom of God produces a transformation in those who receive the new life which Jesus Christ offers. When we yield our lives to Jesus Christ and allow his word to take root in our heart, we are transformed and made holy by the power of the Holy Spirit who dwells in us. Paul the Apostle says, "we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us" (2 Corinthians 4:7). Do you believe in the transforming power of the Holy Spirit?

Heavenly Father, fill me with your Holy Spirit and transform me into the Christ-like holiness you desire. Increase my zeal for your kingdom and instill in me a holy desire to live for your greater glory.

Psalm 145:8-9,15-18

8 The LORD is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
9 The LORD is good to all, and his compassion is over all that he has made.
15 The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food in due season.
16 You open your hand, you satisfy the desire of every living thing.
17 The LORD is just in all his ways, and kind in all his doings.
18 The LORD is near to all who call upon him, to all who call upon him in truth.

Daily Quote from the Early Church Fathers: A small seed produces a great tree, by John Chrysostom (347-407 AD)

"Therefore he brought forward the similitude of this herb, which has a very strong resemblance to the kingdom of heaven. It indeed is 'the least of all seeds, but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof.'
Thus he meant to set forth the most decisive sign of its greatness. 'Even so then shall it also be with respect to the gospel,' he says. For his disciples were weakest of all and least of all. Nevertheless, because of the great power that was in them, it has grown and been unfolded in every part of the world." (excerpt from the THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW, HOMILY 46.2)
