제1독서
창세기. 1,1-19

Reading 1
Gn1:1-19
In the beginning, when God created the heavens and the earth,
the earth was a formless wasteland, and darkness covered the abyss,
while a mighty wind swept over the waters.
Then God said,
"Let there be light," and there was light.
God saw how good the light was.
God then separated the light from the darkness.
God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night."
Thus evening came, and morning followed—the first day.
Then God said,
"Let there be a dome in the middle of the waters,
to separate one body of water from the other."
And so it happened:
God made the dome,
and it separated the water above the dome from the water below it.
God called the dome "the sky."
Evening came, and morning followed—the second day.
Then God said,
"Let the water under the sky be gathered into a single basin,
so that the dry land may appear."
And so it happened:
the water under the sky was gathered into its basin,
and the dry land appeared.
God called the dry land "the earth,"
and the basin of the water he called "the sea."
God saw how good it was.
Then God said,
"Let the earth bring forth vegetation:
every kind of plant that bears seed
and every kind of fruit tree on earth
that bears fruit with its seed in it."
And so it happened:
the earth brought forth every kind of plant that bears seed
and every kind of fruit tree on earth that
bears fruit with its seed in it.
God saw how good it was.
Evening came, and morning followed—the third day.
Then God said:
"Let there be lights in the dome of the sky,
to separate day from night.
Let them mark the fixed times, the days and the years,
and serve as luminaries in the dome of the sky,
to shed light upon the earth."
And so it happened:
God made the two great lights,
the greater one to govern the day,
and the lesser one to govern the night;
and he made the stars.
God set them in the dome of the sky,
to shed light upon the earth,
to govern the day and the night,
and to separate the light from the darkness.
God saw how good it was.
Evening came, and morning followed—the fourth day.
Responsorial Psalm
Ps 104:1-2a, 5-6, 10 and 12, 24 and 35c
R. (31b) May the Lord be glad in his works.
Bless the LORD, O my soul!
O LORD, my God, you are great indeed!
You are clothed with majesty and glory,
robed in light as with a cloak.
R. May the Lord be glad in his works.
You fixed the earth upon its foundation,
not to be moved forever;
With the ocean, as with a garment, you covered it;
above the mountains the waters stood.
R. May the Lord be glad in his works.
You send forth springs into the watercourses
that wind among the mountains.
Beside them the birds of heaven dwell;
from among the branches they send forth their song.
R. May the Lord be glad in his works.
How manifold are your works, O LORD!
In wisdom you have wrought them all—
the earth is full of your creatures;
Bless the LORD, O my soul! Alleluia.
R. May the Lord be glad in his works.
Gospel
Mk 6:53-56
After making the crossing to the other side of the sea,
Jesus and his disciples came to land at Gennesaret
and tied up there.
As they were leaving the boat, people immediately recognized him.
They scurried about the surrounding country
and began to bring in the sick on mats
to wherever they heard he was.
Whatever villages or towns or countryside he entered,
they laid the sick in the marketplaces
and begged him that they might touch only the tassel on his cloak;
and as many as touched it were healed.

Today’s readings take us from creation to the experience of Jesus as God and human.
The first reading on the story of creation is lovely to read and poetic in the descriptions like this one: “Let there be lights in the dome of the sky, to separate day from night. Let them mark the fixed times, the days and the years, and serve as luminaries in the dome of the sky, to shed light upon the earth.”
The story reminds us that there is God in all things. We need to be good stewards of this earth and all living plants and animals. Our care for each other is mirrored in that message. When I do what I can to make the world a better place, I am echoing God’s stewardship and it is good. Let me remember this story of creation when I am about to be careless about the earth or people. Let me find God in all things.
The Gospel shows us God on earth in Jesus. What faith the people had to bring their sick and hope that they could just touch the tassel on Jesus’ cloak and be made well. What I have to remember is that I, too, am loved by Jesus. When I get discouraged or feel the world is overwhelming, my faith may waver. That’s the time when I need to remember that tassel on Jesus’ cloak. I can remember that God is with me and cares for me. I can ask for grace for patience and peace. And I can find both, at least for a time, if I reach for that tassel and open my heart to God’s grace. I can pray, along with today’s psalm, “May the Lord be glad in his works” and know that those works include me.

“SEPARATE YOURSELVES” (2 COR 6:17)
“God then separated...” —Genesis 1:4
God’s original creation involved multiple acts of separation (Gn 1:4, 6, 7, 14, 18). God’s separations were “good” (Gn 1:12, 18). God’s new creation in Christ also involves multiple acts of separation. In His new creation, the Lord separates us from:
• original sin and its loss of intimacy with God through the Sacrament of Baptism (Gn 3:23; Catechism, 1263),
• our sins through the ministry of Jesus (Mt 1:21),
• those who would lead us away from Him, even if it might be a member of our own family (Mt 10:35), and
• our illnesses on many occasions (see Mk 6:56).
Following the Lord’s lead, we must separate ourselves from:
• sinful environments and lifestyles (2 Cor 6:14ff; Rm 8:13),
• the world, the flesh, and the devil, and
• our attachment to possessions. Jesus clearly stated: “None of you can be My disciple if he does not renounce all his possessions” (Lk 14:33).
God’s new-creation lifestyle and worldly, sinful lifestyles don’t mix (Mk 2:21-22). No one can choose both Jesus and the things of this world (Mt 6:24). Sadly, a number of people cannot separate themselves from the attachments of the world. Instead, they separate themselves from Jesus (see Mt 19:22). This choice is hell on earth, as hell is the state of “remaining separated from Him forever by our own free choice” (Catechism, 1033). Repent of choosing sin, pleasure, and possessions. Choose Jesus.
Prayer: Lord, separate me from anything which might separate me from You in this life or in eternity.
Promise: “All who touched [Jesus] got well.” —Mk 6:56
Praise: St. Jerome was taken as a prisoner of war and converted to Christ while chained in his dungeon. After his escape, he cared for orphans and plague victims, and ministered to youth.

Do you recognize the Lord's presence in your life? The Gospel records that when Jesus disembarked from the boat the people immediately recognized him. What did they recognize in Jesus? A prophet, a healer, the Messiah, the Son of God? For sure they recognized that Jesus had power from God to heal and to make whole bodies, limbs, minds, and hearts that were beset with disease, affliction, and sin. What happened when they pressed upon him and touched the fringe of his garment? They were made well. The Lord Jesus is ever ready to meet our needs as well. Do you approach him with expectant faith?
Do you recognize the Lord's presence with you and the power of his word for your life?
Faith is an entirely free gift which God makes to us through the power of the Holy Spirit. Believing and trusting in God to act in our lives is only possible by the grace and help of the Holy Spirit who moves the heart and converts it to God. The Holy Spirit opens the eyes of the mind and helps us to understand, accept, and believe God's word. How do we grow in faith? By listening to God's word with trust and submission. Faith also grows through testing and perseverance. The Lord wants to teach us how to pray in faith for his will for our lives and for the things he wishes to give us to enable us to follow him faithfully and serve him generously.
Do you seek the Lord Jesus and put his kingdom first?
Jesus gave his disciples the perfect prayer which acknowledges God as our Father who provides generously for his children. The Lord's prayer teaches us to seek first the kingdom of God and to pray that God's will be accomplished in our lives. The Lord in turn, gives us what we need to live each day for his glory. The Lord is never too distant nor too busy to meet us and to give his blessing. Do you pray to the Father with confidence that he will show you his will and give you what you need to follow him? Ask the Lord to increase your faith and gratitude for his merciful love and provision for your life.
Lord Jesus, let my heart sing for joy in your presence. Give me eyes of faith to recognize your presence and fill me with your Holy Spirit that I may walk in your way of love and peace.
Psalm 132:6-10
6 Behold, we heard of it in Ephrathah, we found it in the fields of Jaar.
7 "Let us go to his dwelling place; let us worship at his footstool."
8 Arise, O LORD, and go to your resting place, you and the ark of your might.
9 Let your priests be clothed with righteousness, and let your saints shout for joy.
10 For your servant David's sake do not turn away the face of your anointed one.
Daily Quote from the Early Church Fathers: Christ's wounds bring healing and life, by Ambrose of Milan, 339-397 A.D.
"The Lord of hosts was not signaling weakness as he gave sight to the blind, made the crooked to stand upright, raised the dead to life (Matthew 11:5), anticipated the effects of medicine at our prayers, and cured those who sought after him. Those who merely touched the fringe of his robe were healed (Mark 6:56). Surely you did not think it was some divine weakness, you speculators, when you saw him wounded. Indeed there were wounds that pierced his body (Matthew 27:35; Mark 15:24; Luke 23:33; John 19:18, 31-37), but they did not demonstrate weakness but strength. For from these wounds flowed life to all, from the One who was the life of all." (excerpt from ON THE CHRISTIAN FAITH 4.5.54-55.16)
