히브리서. 12,4-7.11-15
형제 여러분, 4 여러분은 죄에 맞서 싸우면서
아직 피를 흘리며 죽는 데까지 이르지는 않았습니다.
5 여러분은 하느님께서 여러분을 자녀로 대하시면서
내리시는 권고를 잊어버렸습니다.
“내 아들아, 주님의 훈육을 하찮게 여기지 말고
그분께 책망을 받아도 낙심하지 마라.
6 주님께서는 사랑하시는 이를 훈육하시고
아들로 인정하시는 모든 이를 채찍질하신다.”
7 여러분의 시련을 훈육으로 여겨 견디어 내십시오.
하느님께서는 여러분을 자녀로 대하십니다.
아버지에게서 훈육을 받지 않는 아들이 어디 있습니까?
11 모든 훈육이 당장은 기쁨이 아니라 슬픔으로 여겨집니다.
그러나 나중에는 그것으로 훈련된 이들에게
평화와 의로움의 열매를 가져다줍니다.
12 그러므로 맥 풀린 손과 힘 빠진 무릎을 바로 세워
13 바른길을 달려가십시오.
그리하여 절름거리는 다리가 접질리지 않고
오히려 낫게 하십시오.
14 모든 사람과 평화롭게 지내고 거룩하게 살도록 힘쓰십시오.
거룩해지지 않고는 아무도 주님을 뵙지 못할 것입니다.
15 여러분은 아무도 하느님의 은총을
놓쳐 버리는 일이 없도록 조심하십시오.
또 쓴 열매를 맺는 뿌리가 하나라도 솟아나 혼란을 일으켜
그것 때문에 많은 사람이 더럽혀지는 일이 없도록 조심하십시오.

마르코. 6,1-6
그때에 1 예수님께서 고향으로 가셨는데 제자들도 그분을 따라갔다.
2 안식일이 되자 예수님께서는 회당에서 가르치기 시작하셨다.
많은 이가 듣고는 놀라서 이렇게 말하였다.
“저 사람이 어디서 저 모든 것을 얻었을까? 저런 지혜를 어디서 받았을까?
그의 손에서 저런 기적들이 일어나다니!
3 저 사람은 목수로서 마리아의 아들이며,
야고보, 요세, 유다, 시몬과 형제간이 아닌가?
그의 누이들도 우리와 함께 여기에 살고 있지 않는가?”
그러면서 그들은 그분을 못마땅하게 여겼다.
4 그러자 예수님께서 그들에게 이르셨다.
“예언자는 어디에서나 존경받지만
고향과 친척과 집안에서만은 존경받지 못한다.”
5 그리하여 예수님께서는 그곳에서 몇몇 병자에게 손을 얹어서
병을 고쳐 주시는 것밖에는 아무런 기적도 일으키실 수 없었다.
6 그리고 그들이 믿지 않는 것에 놀라셨다.
예수님께서는 여러 마을을 두루 돌아다니며 가르치셨다.

Heb 12:4-7, 11-15
Brothers and sisters:
In your struggle against sin
you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood.
You have also forgotten the exhortation addressed to you as children:
My son, do not disdain the discipline of the Lord
or lose heart when reproved by him;
for whom the Lord loves, he disciplines;
he scourges every son he acknowledges.
Endure your trials as "discipline";
God treats you as his sons.
For what "son" is there whom his father does not discipline?
At the time, all discipline seems a cause not for joy but for pain,
yet later it brings the peaceful fruit of righteousness
to those who are trained by it.
So strengthen your drooping hands and your weak knees.
Make straight paths for your feet,
that what is lame may not be dislocated but healed.
Strive for peace with everyone,
and for that holiness without which no one will see the Lord.
See to it that no one be deprived of the grace of God,
that no bitter root spring up and cause trouble,
through which many may become defiled.

Gospel
Mk 6:1-6
Jesus departed from there and came to his native place, accompanied by his disciples.
When the sabbath came he began to teach in the synagogue,
and many who heard him were astonished.
They said, "Where did this man get all this?
What kind of wisdom has been given him?
What mighty deeds are wrought by his hands!
Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary,
and the brother of James and Joseph and Judas and Simon?
And are not his sisters here with us?"
And they took offense at him.
Jesus said to them,
"A prophet is not without honor except in his native place
and among his own kin and in his own house."
So he was not able to perform any mighty deed there,
apart from curing a few sick people by laying his hands on them.
He was amazed at their lack of faith.

I can remember distinctly the most poignant moments of discipline in my childhood, even the little moments like when I’d been especially cruel to a sibling and I got sent to my room for time out. More than anything, I remember the times when I really did wrong. There was one time in particular as a teenager I sat across the dining room table from my parents as they told me that I had completely lost their trust and that I will have some serious work to do to regain it.
I am a pretty self-aware person who is often my own toughest critic. I quickly notice when I’ve made a mistake, hurt a relationship with another, or did wrong. In a lot of ways, I discipline myself after those experiences, not waiting for someone else to do it for me. There are times when I have lacked the compassion for myself that I more readily offer to others. So, when I spend time with God, God is a source of the boundless, infinite love that I don’t always have for myself. With God I feel rest, peace, centeredness in a body and mind that is often racing to do and be better by the own standards I’ve set for myself. In today’s first reading, the image of God being presented is that of parent or discipliner or judge. This image is difficult for me because I am already all of these things for myself.
I can look back at that dining room table experience of my teenage years with some clarity and see that my parents were teaching me an important lesson and that they love me. When I do wrong, now as an adult, and bring this to the primary image of God I pray with – that of the Loving God – God doesn’t immediately say “It’s okay…”. God says “You’re right, you did wrong. What are you going to do to bring healing, to return to right relationship? And know that in the midst of it all, I love you and I am here with you.” My parents didn’t stop loving me when I broke their trust. But I had to show through my actions that I wanted to heal that relationship.
This is what I believe the first reading is ultimately getting to – how, when we do wrong, when we sin, do we seek the work of healing in order to restore right relationship with God, family, friends, community? And what do we need from God in these moments? Maybe we do need God who is going to help us see the wrong we've done and give us encouragement for reconciliation in these relationships. Maybe more than anything, like me, we all need God who is going to still love us immensely in the midst of the wrong and the work for healing. In these times of sin, what do we need from God in order to return to right relationship?
Let us pray. Loving God, You created each one of us in Your image and to grow into our unique personhood in order to be in relationship with You. You created us in community and with freedom, for that we give thanks. When we have done wrong, help us see the pain we have caused and be with us as we seek reconciliation in the relationships we have hurt – with You, with family and friends, with our wider community. Your Love for each of us is great, may we strive to respond to this immense Love with love in everything we do. Amen.

AMAZING FAITH
“...so much did their lack of faith distress Him.” —Mark 6:6
Jesus was amazed at the Syro-Phoenician woman’s faith (Mt 15:28). He was amazed at the centurion’s faith (Mt 8:10). He was amazed at the lack of faith of the people of Nazareth (see Mk 6:6).How do we get amazing faith?
1) We must ask God for it. Faith is a fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22).
2) We must accept the discipline of the Lord (Heb 12:5ff). That in itself gives evidence of our faith. By humbling ourselves and changing our lifestyles to obey the Lord’s commands, we show that we believe the Lord is shaping our lives and we are in His hands.
3) We must not hold anything back from God. “My just man will live by faith, and if he draws back I take no pleasure in him” (Heb 10:38).
4) We obey His commands as set forth in the Bible, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and the teachings of the Church. We actually call this “The Faith.”
May Jesus be amazed at our faith. May we accept eagerly the discipline of the Lord and trust in Him. Jesus, “increase our faith” (Lk 17:5).
Prayer: Father, “not my will but Yours be done” (Lk 22:42).
Promise: “Strive for peace with all men, and for that holiness without which no one can see the Lord.” —Heb 12:14
Praise: St. Blase was bishop of Sebaste in Armenia. He was martyred around 316 AD during the persecution of Emperor Licinius. He is the patron saint of those suffering from throat ailments.

Are you critical towards others, especially those who may be close to you? The most severe critics are often people very familiar to us, a member of our family, a relative, or neighbor or co-worker we rub shoulders with on a regular basis. Jesus faced a severe testing when he returned to his home town, not simply as the carpenter's son, but now as a rabbi with disciples. It would have been customary for Jesus to go to the synagogue each week during the Sabbath, and when his turn came, to read from the scriptures during the Sabbath service. His hometown folks listened with rapt attention on this occasion because they had heard about the miracles he had performed in other towns. What sign would he do in his hometown?
Look upon your neighbor with the eyes of Christ who comes to heal and restore us
Jesus startled his familiar audience with a seeming rebuke that no prophet or servant of God can receive honor among his own people. The people of Nazareth took offense at Jesus and refused to listen to what he had to say. They despised his preaching because he was a mere workman, a carpenter, and a layman who had no formal training by a scholar or teacher. They also despised him because of his undistinguished family background. How familiarity can breed contempt. Jesus could do no mighty works in their midst because they were closed-minded and unbelieving towards him. If people have come together to hate and to refuse to understand, then they will see no other point of view than their own and they will refuse to love and accept others. How do you treat those who seem disagreeable to you?
The word "gospel" literally means "good news". Isaiah had prophesied that the Messiah would come in the power of the Holy Spirit to bring freedom to the afflicted who suffered from physical, mental, or spiritual oppression (see Isaiah 61:1-2). Jesus came to set people free - not only from their physical, mental, and spiritual infirmities - but also from the worst affliction of all - the tyranny of slavery to sin, Satan, and the fear of losing one's life. God's power alone can save us from hopelessness, dejection, and emptiness of life. The Gospel of salvation is "good news" for everyone who will receive it. Do you know the joy and freedom of the Gospel?
Lord Jesus, you are the fulfillment of all our hopes and desires. Your Spirit brings grace, truth, freedom, and abundant life. Set my heart on fire with your love and truth.

1 Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.
2 Blessed is the man to whom the LORD imputes no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit.

"And perhaps, as in the case of metallic substances there exists in some a natural attraction toward some other thing, as in the magnet for iron, and in naphtha for fire, so there is an attraction in such faith toward the divine power according to what Jesus said: 'If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you shall say unto this mountain, 'Move to another place,' and it shall be moved' (Matthew 17:20). Matthew and Mark wished to present the all-surpassing value of that divine power as a power that works even in those who do not believe. But they did not deny that grace works even more powerfully among those who have faith. So it seems to me that they accurately said not that the Lord did not do any mighty works because of their unbelief, but that he did not do many there (Mark 6:5). Mark does not flatly say that he could do no mighty work there at all, and stop at that point, but added, 'except that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk and healed them' (Mark 6:5).
