사무엘기 하 7,1-5.8ㄷ-12.14ㄱ.16
다윗 1 임금이 자기 궁에 자리 잡고,
주님께서 그를 사방의 모든 원수에게서 평온하게 해 주셨을 때이다.
2 임금이 나탄 예언자에게 말하였다.
“보시오, 나는 향백나무 궁에 사는데,
하느님의 궤는 천막에 머무르고 있소.”
3 나탄이 임금에게 말하였다.
“주님께서 임금님과 함께 계시니,
가셔서 무엇이든 마음 내키시는 대로 하십시오.”
4 그런데 그날 밤, 주님의 말씀이 나탄에게 내렸다.
5 “나의 종 다윗에게 가서 말하여라.
‘주님이 이렇게 말한다.
내가 살 집을 네가 짓겠다는 말이냐?
8 나는 양 떼를 따라다니던 너를 목장에서 데려다가,
내 백성 이스라엘의 영도자로 세웠다.
9 또한 네가 어디를 가든지 너와 함께 있으면서,
모든 원수를 네 앞에서 물리쳤다.
나는 너의 이름을 세상 위인들의 이름처럼 위대하게 만들어 주었다.
10 나는 내 백성 이스라엘을 위하여 한곳을 정하고,
그곳에 그들을 심어 그들이 제자리에서 살게 하겠다.
그러면 이스라엘은 더 이상 불안해하지 않아도 되고,
다시는 전처럼, 불의한 자들이 그들을 괴롭히지 않을 것이다.
11 곧 내가 나의 백성 이스라엘에게 판관을 임명하던 때부터 해 온 것처럼,
나는 너를 모든 원수에게서 평온하게 해 주겠다.
더 나아가 주님이 너에게 한 집안을 일으켜 주리라고 선언한다.
12 너의 날수가 다 차서 조상들과 함께 잠들게 될 때,
네 몸에서 나와 네 뒤를 이을 후손을 내가 일으켜 세우고,
그의 나라를 튼튼하게 하겠다.
14 나는 그의 아버지가 되고 그는 나의 아들이 될 것이다.
16 너의 집안과 나라가 네 앞에서 영원히 굳건해지고,
네 왕좌가 영원히 튼튼하게 될 것이다.’”

그때에 요한의 67 아버지 즈카르야는 성령으로 가득 차 이렇게 예언하였다.
68 “주 이스라엘의 하느님께서는 찬미받으소서.
그분께서는 당신 백성을 찾아와 속량하시고
69 당신 종 다윗 집안에서 우리를 위하여 힘센 구원자를 일으키셨습니다.
70 당신의 거룩한 예언자들의 입을 통하여 예로부터 말씀하신 대로
71 우리 원수들에게서, 우리를 미워하는 모든 자의 손에서
우리를 구원하시려는 것입니다.
72 그분께서는 우리 조상들에게 자비를 베푸시고
당신의 거룩한 계약을 기억하셨습니다.
73 이 계약은 우리 조상 아브라함에게 하신 맹세로
74 원수들 손에서 구원된 우리가 두려움 없이
75 한평생 당신 앞에서 거룩하고 의롭게 당신을 섬기도록 해 주시려는 것입니다.

주님을 앞서 가 그분의 길을 준비하리니

and the LORD had given him rest from his enemies on every side,
he said to Nathan the prophet,
"Here I am living in a house of cedar,
while the ark of God dwells in a tent!"
Nathan answered the king,
"Go, do whatever you have in mind,
for the LORD is with you."
But that night the LORD spoke to Nathan and said:
"Go, tell my servant David, 'Thus says the LORD:
Should you build me a house to dwell in?
"'It was I who took you from the pasture
and from the care of the flock
to be commander of my people Israel.
I have been with you wherever you went,
and I have destroyed all your enemies before you.
And I will make you famous like the great ones of the earth.
I will fix a place for my people Israel;
I will plant them so that they may dwell in their place
without further disturbance.
Neither shall the wicked continue to afflict them as they did of old,
since the time I first appointed judges over my people Israel.
I will give you rest from all your enemies.
The LORD also reveals to you
that he will establish a house for you.
And when your time comes and you rest with your ancestors,
I will raise up your heir after you, sprung from your loins,
and I will make his Kingdom firm.

Gospel
Lk 1:67-79
Zechariah his father, filled with the Holy Spirit, prophesied, saying:
"Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;
for he has come to his people and set them free.
He has raised up for us a mighty Savior,
born of the house of his servant David.
Through his prophets he promised of old
that he would save us from our enemies,
from the hands of all who hate us.
He promised to show mercy to our fathers
and to remember his holy covenant.
This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:
to set us free from the hand of our enemies,
free to worship him without fear,
holy and righteous in his sight
all the days of our life.
You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High,
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,
to give his people knowledge of salvation
by the forgiveness of their sins.
In the tender compassion of our God
the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death,
and to guide our feet into the way of peace."

In many respects Jesus’ conception was definitely unique. For us, being born is ultimately being placed in existence without being consulted –how could we have been consulted, when we did not even exist? Also, for us being conceived and born is a necessary step to fuller human life. But God did not need to be conceived and born in order to exist, let alone in order to be happy. Actually, it is precisely by being born as a human child that God became vulnerable, capable of suffering... and of dying. Being human and, indeed, being humanly limited is not a bad condition and God’s example is a challenge for us to accept our humanness and our being limited.
God became human, so identified with our human nature, that God would seem to hide. This is what Elie Wiesel expressed by sharing with us an old Hassidic tale that I want to reproduce here.
Rebbe Barukh’s grandson, Yehiel, came running into his studio in tears.
- Yehiel, Yehiel, why are you crying?
- My friend cheats! It’s unfair. He left me all by myself, that’s why I am
crying!
- Would you like to tell me about it?
- Certainly, grandfather. We played hide-and-seek and it was my turn to
hide and his turn to look for me. So, he gave up. He stopped looking. And that’s
unfair.Rebbe Barukh began to caress Yehiels’s face and tears welled up on his eyes. God too, Yehiel, he whispered softly, God too is unhappy. God is hiding and we are not looking for God. Do you understand, Yehiel? God is hiding and we are not even searching for God.

THE TIME OF FULFILLMENT
“Zechariah his father, filled with the Holy Spirit, uttered this prophecy...” —Luke 1:67
On this Christmas Eve, we stand at the threshold of the fulfillment of amazing prophecies. We may have been waiting for months or years for this, and this Christmas season will be the awaited time. Most of these prophetic promises of God may seem no closer to being fulfilled now than they have been for years. Some of these revelations you can hardly remember. It’s been so long since you first heard them. Nonetheless, now you are on the threshold, although you know this only by faith, not by sight (2 Cor 5:7).
Today, in these last few hours before the Christmas season begins, pray, fast, repent, read the Bible, and be quiet. Choose the better part (Lk 10:42). Don’t be so busy about the details of hospitality (Lk 10:40). Sit at Jesus’ feet and listen to His words (Lk 10:39). Prepare the way of the Lord (Is 40:3). He “will surely come.” His prophetic revelation “will not be late” (see Hab 2:3).
“We possess the prophetic message as something altogether reliable. Keep your attention closely fixed on it, as you would on a lamp shining in a dark place until the first streaks of dawn appear and the morning star rises in your hearts” (2 Pt 1:19; Rv 22:16).
Prayer: Father, rekindle my faith that You will keep the promises which have been unfulfilled for years.
Promise: “Your house and your kingdom shall endure forever.” —2 Sm 7:16
Praise: After years of praying and fasting, Roberta’s husband overcame his addiction and their marriage was restored in the Lord.

Does the proclamation of the Gospel fill you with joy and hope? When the Lord comes to redeem us he fills us with his Holy Spirit, the source of our joy and hope in the promises of God.
Filled with the Holy Spirit and the inspired Word of God
John the Baptist was born shortly before Mary delivered her son, Jesus. When John was circumcised on the eighth day according to the Jewish rite, his father Zechariah was "filled with the Holy Spirit" and with great joy. Inspired by the Holy Spirit he spoke out a prophetic word and hymn of blessing for the work of redemption which God was about to accomplish in Christ. He foresaw the fulfillment of God's promise to David and his descendants that David's dynasty would endure forever through the coming of the Messianic King (2 Samuel 7:16). This King would establish peace and security for his people. We often think of peace as the absence of trouble. The peace which the Messiah brings cancels the debt of sin and restores our broken relationship with God.
Do you know the tender mercy and forgiveness of the Savior?
The Holy Spirit gave Zechariah a vision for his own son as a prophet and forerunner who would prepare the way for the Messiah. Every devout Jew longed for the day when the Messiah would come. Now Zechariah knows beyond a doubt that that day is very near. Like Zechariah, the Holy Spirit wants to give us vision, joy, and confidence in the knowledge of God's merciful love, protection, and care which he offers us through his Son Jesus Christ. Like the Baptist, we too are called to prepare the way that leads to Christ. Life is a journey and we are either moving towards the Lord or away from the Lord. The Lord comes to visit us each day with his life-giving Word and Spirit. Those who hunger for the Lord will not be disappointed. He will draw them to himself and show them his love and mercy.
In sending the Messiah God has made a gracious visit to his people to redeem them. This was the mission for which Jesus Christ was sent into the world - to redeem those sold for sin and sold under sin. In the feast of the Incarnation we celebrate the gracious gift of God in sending his only begotten Son to redeem us. Let us pray that the Holy Spirit may inspire us and fill us with joy and boldness to proclaim the message of the Lord's visitation and redemption.
Lord Jesus, you have been gracious and merciful towards your people. Fill me with your Holy Spirit that I may bear witness to the joy of the Gospel to those around me.

3 You have said, "I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to David my servant:
