Reading 1

Gal 3:22-29

Brothers and sisters:
Scripture confined all things under the power of sin,
that through faith in Jesus Christ
the promise might be given to those who believe.

Before faith came, we were held in custody under law,
confined for the faith that was to be revealed.
Consequently, the law was our disciplinarian for Christ,
that we might be justified by faith.
But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a disciplinarian.
For through faith you are all children of God in Christ Jesus.
For all of you who were baptized into Christ
have clothed yourselves with Christ.
There is neither Jew nor Greek,
there is neither slave nor free person,
there is not male and female;
for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants,
heirs according to the promise.

Responsorial Psalm

Ps 105:2-3, 4-5, 6-7

R. (8a) The Lord remembers his covenant for ever.
or:
R. Alleluia.
Sing to him, sing his praise,
proclaim all his wondrous deeds.
Glory in his holy name;
rejoice, O hearts that seek the LORD!
R. The Lord remembers his covenant for ever.
or:
R. Alleluia.
Look to the LORD in his strength;
seek to serve him constantly.
Recall the wondrous deeds that he has wrought,
his portents, and the judgments he has uttered.
R. The Lord remembers his covenant for ever.
or:
R. Alleluia.
You descendants of Abraham, his servants,
sons of Jacob, his chosen ones!
He, the LORD, is our God;
throughout the earth his judgments prevail.
R. The Lord remembers his covenant for ever.
or:
R. Alleluia.

Gospel

Lk 11:27-28

While Jesus was speaking,
a woman from the crowd called out and said to him,
“Blessed is the womb that carried you
and the breasts at which you nursed.”
He replied, “Rather, blessed are those
who hear the word of God and observe it.”

While he was speaking, a woman from the crowd called out and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that carried you and the breasts at which you nursed.” He replied, “Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.”
—Luke 11:27-28

Reflecting on this Gospel passage certainly calls to mind examples own mother, my grandmothers, our blessed mother Mary, and motherly figures in my life…. Mothers who not only gave birth and nourishment, but also modeled faith, closeness to Jesus and an intentional way of faith-filled living in this world. Mothers certainly carry much responsibility in shaping us and nourishing our growth and development, as the woman calls out, in the Gospel passage today. But, additionally, it seems that Jesus is highlighting and clarifying important guidance for us – those who model their lives on Jesus, and know him intimately, are blessed. Mothers, and all of us, are called to go a step further to align our actions and motives with the Jesus, in all that we do. We are invited to let God’s love transform us, so that we respond to all of God’s creation, those around us, in love.

In addition to reflecting on the mother figures in my life, I also reflect on my own role as mother to my three children. My youngest son turns one year old this week. The references to carrying an infant in my womb and breastfeeding are very recent and resonant for me, especially as I work from home, near him, during these days of the pandemic. It is a privilege, an absolute joy and an enormous challenge to raise him.

I wonder….What will others say about my children as they grow up? What will my children say about me when they are older? Will they be grateful that I spent time and effort in generously and intentionally trying to raise them well? Will they be grateful for nourishing them, as they grow – physically, spiritually, emotionally? As I reflect on this passage, my hope becomes more clear: that my children will be grateful for me not only because I gave birth, nursed them and guided their growth, but because I modeled how to hear God’s word and model my life on it. I hope my children would say that I helped show them how to be attentive and receptive to God’s voice. That is a tall order and a great hope.

I imagine that Jesus is maybe getting at something similar. He recognizes how holy his mother is for giving birth to him and to nourishing him, but especially for modeling attentiveness and receptivity to God’s will.

This short gospel passage allows Jesus to expand on his invitation for all of us to be close to him, to be transformed by knowing him and to model God’s love in all aspects of our lives. No doubt, this will help transform our world, working at eliminating discrimination, racism, all forms of injustice, in order to help bring about the Kingdom of God here on earth.

Who are the motherly figures, or other persons of faith, that have modeled these characteristics for you, in your life? May we be blessed, by their example, and especially by our own receptivity to God’s word.

BLESSED AMONG BLESSINGS

“Blest are they who hear the word of God and keep it.” —Luke 11:28

Physical relationships can be very fulfilling for human beings. For example, a married couple’s physical relationship expressed in sexual intercourse can be an exceptional blessing. The physical relationship of a mother with the child she conceives, births, and nurtures is also one of the greatest blessings in life. Therefore, a woman cried out to Jesus: “Blest is the womb that bore You and the breasts that nursed You!” (Lk 11:27) However, Jesus responded: “Rather...blest are they who hear the word of God and keep it” (Lk 11:28). As wonderful as physical relationships can be, even as wondrous as was Mary’s physical relationship with Jesus, it is more blest to hear God’s Word and keep it.

Living God’s Word is such a blessing that when Jeremiah found God’s words, he devoured them (Jer 15:16). They became the joy and happiness of his heart (Jer 15:16). The psalmist delighted in obeying God’s Word (Ps 40:9). God’s Word was more precious to him “than thousands of gold and silver pieces” (Ps 119:72). When Ezra proclaimed God’s Word to the people, they rejoiced and celebrated for eight days (Neh 8:9-10, 17-18). Jesus spent the afternoon and evening of His Resurrection day by opening the hearts and minds of two disciples and the apostles to the Scriptures (see Lk 24:27, 32, 45). There is something very blest about hearing and doing God’s Word. Get blest.

Prayer:  Father, I commit myself by Your grace to pray and read the Bible every day for the rest of my life.

Promise:  “If you belong to Christ you are the descendants of Abraham, which means you inherit all that was promised.” —Gal 3:29

Praise:  Louise has spent time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament every week for over twenty years.

Who do you seek to favor and bless? When an admirer wished to compliment Jesus by praising his mother, Jesus did not deny the truth of the blessing she pronounced. Her beatitude (which means "blessedness" or "happiness") recalls Mary's canticle: All generations will call me blessed (Luke 1:48). Jesus adds to her words by pointing to the source of all true blessedness or happiness - union with God in heart, mind, and will.

We can hear God's Word and believe it
Mary humbly submitted herself to the miraculous plan of God for the incarnation of his only begotten Son - the Word of God made flesh in her womb - by declaring: I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word (Luke 1:38). Mary heard the word spoken to her by the angel sent by God and she believed it.

On another occasion Jesus remarked that whoever does the will of God is a friend of God and a member of his family - his sons and daughters who have been ransomed by the precious blood of Christ (Luke 8:21). They are truly blessed because they know their God personally and they find joy in hearing and obeying his word.

Jesus unites us with our heavenly Father
Our goal in life, the very reason we were created in the first place, is for union with God. We were made for God and our hearts are restless until they rest in him. Lucian of Antioch (240-312), an early Christian theologian and martyr, once said that "a Christian's only relatives are the saints." Those who follow Jesus Christ and who seek the will of God enter into a new family, a family of "saints" here on earth and in heaven. Jesus changes the order of relationships and shows that true kinship is not just a matter of flesh and blood. Our adoption as sons and daughters of God transforms all our relationships and requires a new order of loyalty to God and his kingdom. Do you hunger for God and for his word?

Lord Jesus, my heart is restless until it rests in you. Help me to live in your presence and in the knowledge of your great love for me. May I seek to please you in all that I do, say, and think.

Psalm 97:1-2, 5-6, 11-12

1 The LORD reigns; let the earth rejoice; let the many coast lands be glad!
2 Clouds and thick darkness are round about him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.
5 The mountains melt like wax before the LORD, before the Lord of all the earth.
6 The heavens proclaim his righteousness; and all the peoples behold his glory.
11 Light dawns for the righteous, and joy for the upright in heart.
12 Rejoice in the LORD, O you righteous, and give thanks to his holy name!

Daily Quote from the Early Church Fathers: Blessings for hearing and keeping the Word, by Augustine of Hippo, 354-430 A.D.

"Mary was more blessed in accepting the faith of Christ than in conceiving the flesh of Christ. To someone who said, 'Blessed is the womb that bore you,' he replied, 'Rather, blessed are they who hear the word of God and keep it.' Finally, for his brothers, his relatives according to the flesh who did not believe in him, of what advantage was that relationship? Even her maternal relationship would have done Mary no good unless she had borne Christ more happily in her heart than in her flesh." (excerpt from HOLY VIRGINITY 3.1)
