코린토 1서. 7,25-31
.형제 여러분,
25 미혼자들에 관해서는 내가 주님의 명령을 받은 바가 없습니다.
그러나 주님의 자비를 입어 믿을 만한 사람이 된 자로서 의견을 내놓습니다.
26 현재의 재난 때문에 지금 그대로 있는 것이 사람에게 좋다고 나는 생각합니다.
27 그대는 아내에게 매여 있습니까? 갈라서려고 하지 마십시오.
그대는 아내와 갈라졌습니까? 아내를 얻으려고 하지 마십시오.
28 그러나 그대가 혼인하더라도 죄를 짓는 것은 아닙니다.
또 처녀가 혼인하더라도 죄를 짓는 것은 아닙니다.
그러나 그렇게 혼인하는 이들은 현세의 고통을 겪을 것입니다.
나는 여러분이 그것을 면하게 하고 싶습니다.
29 형제 여러분, 내가 말하려는 것은 이것입니다.
때가 얼마 남지 않았습니다.
이제부터 아내가 있는 사람은 아내가 없는 사람처럼,

In regard to virgins, I have no commandment from the Lord,
but I give my opinion as one who by the Lord’s mercy is trustworthy.
So this is what I think best because of the present distress:
that it is a good thing for a person to remain as he is.
Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek a separation.
Are you free of a wife? Then do not look for a wife.
If you marry, however, you do not sin,
nor does an unmarried woman sin if she marries;
but such people will experience affliction in their earthly life,
and I would like to spare you that.
I tell you, brothers, the time is running out.
From now on, let those having wives act as not having them,
those weeping as not weeping,
those rejoicing as not rejoicing,
those buying as not owning,
those using the world as not using it fully.
For the world in its present form is passing away.

The Cry of the Poor
“For the world in its present form is passing away.” (1 Corinthians 7: 31)
Paul admonishes the community: “Stay watchful. Our life and hope is coming. Let not ordinary matters absorb us. Hold together in prayer, wonder, and expectation.” On most days, our default is distraction and worry. Our attention rivets on what’s next. The daily hum of busyness conceals the point of it all. Awake, we grow more present to our lives. Untethered from tasks, our senses reveal the world in its fleeting beauty. Sitting in the yard, we admire an old shrub not noticed in years. A peaceful expectation not driven by adrenaline opens us to gratitude. We are cherished as the mortals we are. Here we are on God’s good earth trying to keep things together.
Luke admonishes us: “Go to the margins. In the company of the hungry and sorrowful, those reviled and abandoned, there you find our God.” Swaddled in comfort and well-insulated from weary faces, my vision is impaired. I am in trouble. To be freed from emptiness, we follow Jesus into the world to relieve suffering and challenge injustice. Here is our home. Walls built to hide from the poor cannot contain us.
Today we celebrate the life of St. Peter Claver, S. J. In the seminary on Mallorca, the porter—St. Alphonsus Rodriguez—urged Peter to serve God in the missions. Peter resolved to minister to the African people before he first descended into the cargo hold of the slave ships docked in Cartagena in 1610. Peter Claver would baptize thousands of traumatized survivors of the middle passage before their labor on plantations and in silver mines began. He pressed the Christians of Spain to treat their baptized kin with greater kindness.
We tell ourselves that slavery was part of the world. Good Christians did not know better. That story forgets about those like Claver who were pierced by the horror of treating persons, made in God’s image, as objects to kidnap and sell.
“Blessed are you who are poor; for the Kingdom of God is yours.” Let us follow the Beatitudes home.

OUT OF EGYPT
“The world as we know it is passing away.” —1 Corinthians 7:31
The Israelites in the desert preferred the food of slavery rather than the food of freedom (Nm 11:5). It was apparently easier for God to get the Israelites physically out of Egypt than it was to get Egypt out of Israel, that is to detach the Israelites from their attachment to the benefits and foods they had while they were slaves in Egypt.
Is anything holding you bound so that you cannot follow God? Ask Him to break those chains and set you free. Ask Jesus for the grace of detachment required to be set free of any attachments to the material things, blessings, and pleasures of this world, both good and bad. Earth will pass away, but the Word of God will never pass (Mt 5:18).
Since “the world as we know it is passing away” (1 Cor 7:31), “now is the acceptable time” (2 Cor 6:2). The Lord invites us: “Come now, let us set things right” (Is 1:18). “Why delay, then?” (Acts 22:16) “You are not to spend what remains of your earthly life on human desires but on the will of God. Already you have devoted enough time to what the pagans enjoy” (1 Pt 4:2-3).
Prayer: Father, may “our relation to this world [be] just like [that of Jesus]” (1 Jn 4:17).
Promise: “Blest shall you be when men hate you, when they ostracize you and insult you and proscribe your name as evil because of the Son of Man. On the day they do so, rejoice and exult, for your reward shall be great in heaven.” —Lk 6:22-23
Praise: St. Peter, the patron of the mission to slaves, truly imitated Christ. In Cartagena, Columbia, he sought out the African slave ships. In humility, he entered the infested holds to care for the sick and the dying.

When you encounter misfortune, grief, or tragic loss, how do you respond? With fear or faith? With passive resignation or with patient hope and trust in God? We know from experience that no one can escape all of the inevitable trials of life - pain, suffering, sickness, and death. When Jesus began to teach his disciples he gave them a "way of happiness" that transcends every difficulty and trouble that can weigh us down with grief and despair. Jesus began his sermon on the mount by addressing the issue of where true happiness can be found. The word beatitude literally means happiness or blessedness. Jesus' way of happiness, however, demands a transformation from within - a conversion of heart and mind which can only come about through the gift and working of the Holy Spirit.
True happiness can only be fulfilled in God
How can one possibly find happiness in poverty, hunger, mourning, and persecution? If we want to be filled with the joy and happiness of heaven, then we must empty ourselves of all that would shut God out of our hearts. Poverty of spirit finds ample room and joy in possessing God alone as the greatest treasure possible. Hunger of the spirit seeks nourishment and strength in God's word and Spirit. Sorrow and mourning over wasted life and sin leads to joyful freedom from the burden of guilt and oppression.
The beatitudes strengthen us in virtue and excellence
Ambrose (339-397 A.D), an early church father and bishop of Milan, links the beatitudes with the four cardinal virtues which strengthen us in living a life of moral excellence. He writes: "Let us see how St. Luke encompassed the eight blessings in the four. We know that there are four cardinal virtues: temperance, justice, prudence and fortitude. One who is poor in spirit is not greedy. One who weeps is not proud but is submissive and tranquil. One who mourns is humble. One who is just does not deny what he knows is given jointly to all for us. One who is merciful gives away his own goods. One who bestows his own goods does not seek another's, nor does he contrive a trap for his neighbor. These virtues are interwoven and interlinked, so that one who has one may be seen to have several, and a single virtue befits the saints. Where virtue abounds, the reward too abounds... Thus temperance has purity of heart and spirit, justice has compassion, patience has peace, and endurance has gentleness." (EXPOSITION OF THE GOSPEL OF LUKE 5.62-63, 68).
No one can live without joy
God reveals to the humble of heart the true source of abundant life and happiness. Jesus promises his disciples that the joys of heaven will more than compensate for the troubles and hardships they can expect in this world. Thomas Aquinas said: "No person can live without joy. That is why someone deprived of spiritual joy goes after carnal pleasures." Do you know the joy and happiness of hungering and thirsting for God alone?
Lord Jesus, increase my hunger for you and show me the way that leads to everlasting happiness and peace. May I desire you above all else and find perfect joy in doing your will.
Psalm 145:2-3,10-13a
2 Every day I will bless you, and praise your name for ever and ever.

"'Blessed,' it says, 'are the poor.' Not all the poor are blessed, for poverty is neutral. The poor can be either good or evil, unless, perhaps, the blessed pauper is to be understood as he whom the prophet described, saying, 'A righteous poor man is better than a rich liar' (Proverbs 19:22). Blessed is the poor man who cried and whom the Lord heard (Psalm 34:6). Blessed is the man poor in offense. Blessed is the man poor in vices. Blessed is the poor man in whom the prince of this world (John 14:30) finds nothing. Blessed is the poor man who is like that poor Man who, although he was rich, became poor for our sake (2 Corinthians 8:9). Matthew fully revealed this when he said, 'Blessed are the poor in spirit' (Matthew 5:3). One poor in spirit is not puffed up, is not exalted in the mind of his own flesh. This beatitude is first, when I have laid aside every sin, and I have taken off all malice, and I am content with simplicity, destitute of evils. All that remains is that I regulate my conduct.
