Reading 1

Dn 7:9-10, 13-14
As I watched:

Thrones were set up
and the Ancient One took his throne.
His clothing was bright as snow,
and the hair on his head as white as wool;
his throne was flames of fire,
with wheels of burning fire.
A surging stream of fire
flowed out from where he sat;
Thousands upon thousands were ministering to him,
and myriads upon myriads attended him.
The court was convened and the books were opened.

As the visions during the night continued, I saw:

One like a Son of man coming,
on the clouds of heaven;
When he reached the Ancient One
and was presented before him,
The one like a Son of man received dominion, glory, and kingship;
all peoples, nations, and languages serve him.
His dominion is an everlasting dominion
that shall not be taken away,
his kingship shall not be destroyed.

Responsorial Psalm

97:1-2, 5-6, 9

R. (1a and 9a) The Lord is king, the Most High over all the earth.
The LORD is king; let the earth rejoice;
let the many islands be glad.
Clouds and darkness are round about him,
justice and judgment are the foundation of his throne.
R. The Lord is king, the Most High over all the earth.
The mountains melt like wax before the LORD,
before the LORD of all the earth.
The heavens proclaim his justice,
and all peoples see his glory.
R. The Lord is king, the Most High over all the earth.
Because you, O LORD, are the Most High over all the earth,
exalted far above all gods.
R. The Lord is king, the Most High over all the earth.

Reading II

2 Pt 1:16-19

Beloved:
We did not follow cleverly devised myths
when we made known to you
the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ,
but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty.
For he received honor and glory from God the Father
when that unique declaration came to him from the majestic glory,
“This is my Son, my beloved, with whom I am well pleased.”
We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven
while we were with him on the holy mountain.
Moreover, we possess the prophetic message that is altogether reliable.
You will do well to be attentive to it,
as to a lamp shining in a dark place,
until day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.

Gospel
MT 17.1-9

Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother, John,
and led them up a high mountain by themselves.
And he was transfigured before them;
his face shone like the sun
and his clothes became white as light.
And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them,
conversing with him.
Then Peter said to Jesus in reply,
“Lord, it is good that we are here.
If you wish, I will make three tents here,
one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
While he was still speaking, behold,
a bright cloud cast a shadow over them,
then from the cloud came a voice that said,
“This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased;
listen to him.”
When the disciples heard this, they fell prostrate
and were very much afraid.
But Jesus came and touched them, saying,
“Rise, and do not be afraid.”
And when the disciples raised their eyes,
they saw no one else but Jesus alone.

As they were coming down from the mountain,
Jesus charged them,
“Do not tell the vision to anyone
until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Transfiguration. The Gospel reading tells the story of this event in the life of Jesus. In the second reading, St. Peter states that this story is not a “cleverly devised myth.” He, with James and John, were eyewitnesses of what occurred on the mountain. They saw what happened. They heard the voice of God. This is why they had dedicated their lives to announcing “the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” In the world I live in, what impresses me about this event is how Jesus comes in power. In the story we see the power of God coming as light through Jesus’ clothing and person. We see the Shekinah glory of God enveloping the disciples as a cloud, the same cloud that filled the temple at its dedication and caused everyone inside the building to flee. It was the same cloud that Moses entered when he spoke face to face with God - the same cloud in which his face became so bright that he had to wear a veil (mask?) so that people could look at him. Why such an emphasis on Jesus coming in power?

The first reading tells us why. To get the big picture, I encourage you to read all of Daniel chapter 7. Daniel had a dream. In the dream he saw four kingdoms. Each kingdom was erected by men who worshiped violence. These kingdoms crushed and trampled under their feet anything that stood in their way. Then we come to our reading. God had enough. The time for judgment on these kingdoms had come. God is described as the Ancient One. He takes his throne which is surrounded by fire and millions of attendants. The court was now in session. The books were opened. The arrogant words and deeds of these violent kingdoms were read. Sentence was passed and the death penalty for the worst of the kingdoms was administered.

Then the dream takes a dramatic turn. Suddenly, Daniel sees someone approaching God on the clouds of heaven. He looked like a Son of Man. He was presented to the Ancient One who gave him dominion, glory, and kingship. He ordained that all peoples, nations, and languages shall serve him. He is given everlasting dominion and a kingship that shall never be taken away or destroyed.

We believe and confess that the one like a Son of Man is none other than our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He has all power and authority in heaven and on earth. He has an everlasting kingdom. As the psalmist says, the Lord is king, the Most High over all the earth. By the grace of God, you and I can be part of his kingdom. But there is an important caveat: Jesus doesn’t wield his power to crush and dominate. As the psalmist makes clear, “justice and judgment are the foundation of his throne.” Or, as he says in the next verse, “The heavens proclaim his justice, and all peoples see his glory.”

How will the peoples see his glory if his disciples do not join the heavens and proclaim his justice? Peter, James, and John saw his power and glory and dedicated their lives to proclaiming his message of peace and justice for all. All people are welcome in this kingdom. All are treated with respect. From the least to the greatest, all are loved by God. There is judgment for those who withhold justice and trample others under their feet.

May we who call upon the name of Jesus and are filled with the power of the Holy Spirit given to us by the Ancient One use our energy, our gifts, and all of the power that Jesus gives us to bring the justice of God to those around us.

And may the peoples see his glory.

THE COMING GLORY

“Keep your attention closely fixed on it, as you would on a lamp shining in a dark place.” —2 Peter 1:19

The Transfiguration shows our future, what will happen to us if we are truly faithful followers of the Lord. We are destined to a divine life if we “listen to Him” and heed His words (see Mk 9:7). God plans to make us “sharers of the divine nature” (2 Pt 1:4). If we remain in Jesus to the end of our life, when Christ appears, “we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is” (1 Jn 3:2). All limits shall be gone. We will live on God’s holy mountain (see Is 25:6ff; 56:7; 65:25). We will be truly living in the Promised Land.
Yet presently, we live here on earth. We keep our eyes fixed on the prophetic message (2 Pt 1:16-19) of the Word of God. We live as citizens of heaven though still on earth, in the “already, but not yet.” The Transfiguration of our Lord helps us get a glimpse of the future glory God offers to us (see Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1000).
On this Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord, may the brilliant shining Light of the World, Jesus, light our path through the darkness of this world (Jn 1:5). Thus, focus not on the darkness but on the promises of Jesus, Who overcomes the darkness (Jn 1:5). “Light of the World,” illuminate my hope in You (Jn 9:5).

Prayer:  Father, on the Mount of Transfiguration You tell me to “listen to [Jesus]” (Mk 9:7). Give me “ears open to obedience” (Ps 40:7) and a heart quick to hope, love, and obey You fully.

Promise:  “He was transfigured before their eyes. His face became as dazzling as the sun, His clothes as radiant as light.” —Mt 17:2

Praise:  “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets. I have come, not to abolish them, but to fulfill them” (Mt 5:17). Lord Jesus, Your Transfiguration brings clarity and foreshadows our own transfiguration into glory.

How firm is your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ? At an opportune time Jesus tested his disciples with a crucial question: Who do men say that I am and who do you say that I am? (Matthew 16:13). Jesus was widely recognized in Israel as a mighty man of God, even being compared with the greatest of the prophets, John the Baptist, Elijah, and Jeremiah. Peter, always quick to respond, exclaimed that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of the living God.

Through the gift of faith Peter recognized that Jesus was the "anointed one" (in Hebrew and Greek the word is translated as Messiah and Christ), and the only begotten Son of God sent by the Father in heaven to redeem a fallen human race. No mortal being could have revealed this to Peter; but only God. Jesus then conferred on Peter authority to govern the church that Jesus would build, a church that no powers could overcome. Jesus played on Peter's name which is the same word for "rock" in both Aramaic and Greek.

Spiritual rock ad living stones
To call someone a "rock" is one of the greatest of compliments. The ancient rabbis had a saying that when God saw Abraham, he exclaimed: "I have discovered a rock to found the world upon." Abraham put his trust in God and made God's word the foundation of his life and the bedrock of his faith. Through Abraham God established a nation for himself. Through faith Peter grasped who Jesus truly was. He was the first apostle to proclaim that Jesus was truly the Anointed One (Messiah and Christ) and the only begotten Son of God.

The New Testament describes the church, the people of God, as a spiritual house and temple of the Holy Spirit with each member joined together as living stones (see 1 Peter 2:5). Faith in Jesus Christ makes us into rocks - spiritual stones. The Lord Jesus tests each of us personally with the same question: Who do you say that I am?

Lord Jesus, I profess and believe that you are the Christ, the Son of the living God. You are my Lord and my Savior who has set me free from sin and deception. Make my faith strong like the Apostles Peter and Paul and give me boldness to speak of you to others that they may come to know you as Lord and Savior.

Psalm 19:2-5

2 Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night declares knowledge.
3 There is no speech, nor are there words; their voice is not heard;
4 yet their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun,
5 which comes forth like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and like a strong man runs its course with joy.

Daily Quote from the Early Church Fathers: Only by hope, by Basil the Great, 329-379 A.D.

"'Turn, O my soul, into your rest: for the Lord has been bountiful to you' (Psalm 114:7). The brave contestant applies to himself the consoling words, very much like to Paul, when he says: 'I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith. For the rest, there is laid up for me a crown of justice.' These things the prophet also says to himself: Since you have fulfilled sufficiently the course of this life, turn then to your rest, 'for the Lord has been bountiful to you.' For, eternal rest lies before those who have struggled through the present life observant of the laws, a rest not given in payment for a debt owed for their works but provided as a grace of the munificent God for those who have hoped in him." (excerpt from HOMILIES 22)
