호세아 예언서 14,2-10
주님께서 이렇게 말씀하신다.
2 “이스라엘아, 주 너희 하느님께 돌아와라.
너희는 죄악으로 비틀거리고 있다.
3 너희는 말씀을 받아들이고 주님께 돌아와 아뢰어라.
‘죄악은 모두 없애 주시고 좋은 것은 받아 주십시오.
이제 저희는 황소가 아니라 저희 입술을 바치렵니다.
4 아시리아는 저희를 구원하지 못합니다.
저희가 다시는 군마를 타지 않으렵니다.
저희 손으로 만든 것을 보고 다시는 ′우리 하느님!′이라 말하지 않으렵니다.
고아를 가엾이 여기시는 분은 당신뿐이십니다.’
5 그들에게 품었던 나의 분노가 풀렸으니
이제 내가 반역만 꾀하는 그들의 마음을 고쳐 주고 기꺼이 그들을 사랑해 주리라.

9 내가 응답해 주고 돌보아 주는데 에프라임이 우상들과 무슨 상관이 있느냐?
나는 싱싱한 방백나무 같으니 너희는 나에게서 열매를 얻으리라.
10 지혜로운 사람은 이를 깨닫고 분별 있는 사람은 이를 알아라.
주님의 길은 올곧아서 의인들은 그 길을 따라 걸어가고

마태오 10,16-23
그때에 예수님께서 사도들에게 말씀하셨다.

16 “나는 이제 양들을 이리 떼 가운데로 보내는 것처럼 너희를 보낸다.
그러므로 뱀처럼 슬기롭고 비둘기처럼 순박하게 되어라.
17 사람들을 조심하여라.
그들이 너희를 의회에 넘기고 회당에서 채찍질할 것이다.
18 또 너희는 나 때문에 총독들과 임금들 앞에 끌려가,
그들과 다른 민족들에게 증언할 것이다.
19 사람들이 너희를 넘길 때, 어떻게 말할까, 무엇을 말할까 걱정하지 마라.
너희가 무엇을 말해야 할지, 그때에 너희에게 일러 주실 것이다.
20 사실 말하는 이는 너희가 아니라 너희 안에서 말씀하시는 아버지의 영이시다.
21 형제가 형제를 넘겨 죽게 하고 아버지가 자식을 그렇게 하며,
자식들도 부모를 거슬러 일어나 죽게 할 것이다.
22 그리고 너희는 내 이름 때문에 모든 사람에게 미움을 받을 것이다.
그러나 끝까지 견디는 이는 구원을 받을 것이다.
23 어떤 고을에서 너희를 박해하거든 다른 고을로 피하여라.
내가 진실로 너희에게 말한다.

Hos 14:2-10

Thus says the LORD:
Return, O Israel, to the LORD, your God;
you have collapsed through your guilt.
Take with you words,
and return to the LORD;
Say to him, "Forgive all iniquity,
and receive what is good, that we may render
as offerings the bullocks from our stalls.
Assyria will not save us,
nor shall we have horses to mount;
We shall say no more, 'Our god,'
to the work of our hands;
for in you the orphan finds compassion."
I will heal their defection, says the LORD,
I will love them freely;
for my wrath is turned away from them.
I will be like the dew for Israel:
he shall blossom like the lily;
He shall strike root like the Lebanon cedar,
and put forth his shoots.
His splendor shall be like the olive tree
and his fragrance like the Lebanon cedar.
Again they shall dwell in his shade
and raise grain;
They shall blossom like the vine,

Gospel

Mt 10:16-23

Jesus said to his Apostles:

 

"Behold, I am sending you like sheep in the midst of wolves;
so be shrewd as serpents and simple as doves.
But beware of men, 
for they will hand you over to courts
and scourge you in their synagogues,
and you will be led before governors and kings for my sake
as a witness before them and the pagans.
When they hand you over,
do not worry about how you are to speak
or what you are to say.
You will be given at that moment what you are to say.
For it will not be you who speak
but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
Brother will hand over brother to death,
and the father his child;
children will rise up against parents and have them put to death.
You will be hated by all because of my name,
but whoever endures to the end will be saved.
When they persecute you in one town, flee to another.
Amen, I say to you, you will not finish the towns of Israel
before the Son of Man comes."

In this Gospel reading, Jesus says two very different things.  At first he makes us responsible for being as clever as snakes and as innocent as sheep as we make our way in the world; we must be on our guard in respect to others.  In all of this we are to take charge and be in control of ourselves, yet only a few verses later he asks us to put ourselves in the hands of the Spirit.

I don't think that there is a conflict here.  Just as we do not save ourselves without God's help, God does not save us without our cooperation and openness.  Our being very present to our lives, seeing the blessings and the harder times, knowing that God, the Teacher, is always with us to challenge and instruct, to guide and to call us further – it is all grace, all cause for thanksgiving and praise, whether we can see it at the time or not.

In the end, our lives are all about living the great virtue of hope in a love filled with faith.  Let us walk with God today as best we can, our hands in the hand of our loving Father, as the Three teach us to be human in the best way and thus to grow into the children They seek us to become.

GET THE MESSAGE?

“I will love them freely.” —Hosea 14:5

Today we conclude the readings from the book of Hosea, and the logical concluding questions are: “Did we get the message of the prophet Hosea? And has it sunk deep in our hearts and been applied to our lives?”
The revelation the Lord gave through Hosea is that His love for us is unconditional. As the Lord told Hosea to marry and love an adulterous wife, so the Lord loves us even if we choose to be unfaithful to Him through sin (see Hos 1:2).
Have you accepted the grace to believe that God’s love for you is perfect, infinite, unconditional, and unchangeable? As baptized sons and daughters of God, we should be unshakably secure in our Father’s love. This should make us truly free and profoundly at peace.
If you believe in God’s unconditional love for you, have you applied this to your life by accepting the grace to respond by loving Him unconditionally? Even if the Lord permitted you to suffer the tragedies of Job, would you say: “Blessed be the name of the Lord”? (Jb 1:21) Live in unconditional love.

Prayer:  Father, may the words of the prophet Hosea find a home in my heart.

Promise:  “You will be hated by all on account of Me. But whoever holds out till the end will escape death.” —Mt 10:22

Praise:  Although her husband became disabled soon after their marriage, Jean cared for him and their son faithfully and with sacrificial love.

 Sheep in the midst of wolves - wise and innocent

What does Jesus mean when he says his disciples must be sheep in the midst of wolves (Matthew 10:16)? The prophet Isaiah foretold a time when wolves and lambs will dwell in peace (Isaiah 11:6 and 65:25). This Old Testament prophecy certainly refers to the second coming of Christ when all will be united under the Lordship of Jesus after he has put down his enemies and established the reign of God over the heavens and the earth (Ephesians 1:10 and Revelation 11:15). In the meantime, the disciples must expect opposition and persecution from those who oppose the Gospel and the coming of God's kingdom. 

The readiness to serve and face hardship for Christ and his kingdom 
Jesus never hesitated to tell his disciples what they might expect if they chose to follow him. Here Jesus says to his disciples: This is my task for you at its grimmest and worst - do you accept it? This is not the world's way of recruitment for service and toil with promise of honor and reward. After the British defeat at Dunkirk (June 1940), Churchill offered his country blood, toil, sweat, and tears. 

This is not the message we prefer to hear when the Lord Jesus commissions us in his service for the advancement of God's kingdom and the battle against Satan's kingdom of darkness and death. Nonetheless, our privilege is to follow in the footsteps of the Lord and Master who willingly laid down his life for us in order to bring us victory over Satan, sin, and death. Are you willing to accept hardship and suffering in serving the Lord Jesus Christ?

"Lord Jesus, help me to patiently and joyfully accept the hardships, adversities, and persecution which come my way in serving you and your kingdom of love, truth,and goodness. Strengthen my faith and give me courage that I may not shrink back from doing your will."

3 Trust in the LORD, and do good; so you will dwell in the land, and enjoy security. 
4 Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart. 
5 Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act.

"To be sure, we heard in that reading, 'But when they deliver you up, do not be anxious how or what you are to speak... for it is not you who are speaking but the Spirit of your Father who speaks through you.' And he says in another place: 'Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the world' (Matthew 28:20). Does this mean that the people who heard those words of the Lord would be here until the end of the world? The Lord was referring, rather, not only to those about to depart from this life but also to the others, including us and those who would come after us in this life. He saw everyone in his single body, and the words he spoke, 'I am with you even to the end of the world,' were heard by them and by us too. And if we did not hear them then in our knowledge, we heard them in his foreknowledge. Therefore, safe as sheep among the wolves, let us keep the commandments of him who directs us. And let us be 'innocent as doves but cautious as snakes' (Matthew 10:16).
