제1독서
이사야서. 61,9-11

Reading 1
Beloved:
I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus,
who will judge the living and the dead,
and by his appearing and his kingly power:
proclaim the word;
be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient;
convince, reprimand, encourage through all patience and teaching.
For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine
but, following their own desires and insatiable curiosity,
will accumulate teachers and will stop listening to the truth
and will be diverted to myths.
But you, be self-possessed in all circumstances;
put up with hardship;
perform the work of an evangelist;
fulfill your ministry.
For I am already being poured out like a libation,
and the time of my departure is at hand.
I have competed well;
I have finished the race; I have kept the faith.
From now on the crown of righteousness awaits me,
which the Lord, the just judge,
will award to me on that day, and not only to me,
but to all who have longed for his appearance.
Responsorial Psalm
R. (see 15ab) I will sing of your salvation.
My mouth shall be filled with your praise,
with your glory day by day.
Cast me not off in my old age;
as my strength fails, forsake me not.
R. I will sing of your salvation.
But I will always hope
and praise you ever more and more.
My mouth shall declare your justice,
day by day your salvation.
R. I will sing of your salvation.
I will treat of the mighty works of the Lord;
O GOD, I will tell of your singular justice.
O God, you have taught me from my youth,
and till the present I proclaim your wondrous deeds.
R. I will sing of your salvation.
So will I give you thanks with music on the lyre,
for your faithfulness, O my God!
I will sing your praises with the harp,
O Holy One of Israel!
R. I will sing of your salvation.
Alleluia
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Blessed is the Virgin Mary who kept the word of God
and pondered it in her heart.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel Lk 2:41-51
Each year Jesus' parents went to Jerusalem for the feast of Passover,
and when he was twelve years old,
they went up according to festival custom.
After they had completed its days, as they were returning,
the boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem,
but his parents did not know it.
Thinking that he was in the caravan,
they journeyed for a day
and looked for him among their relatives and acquaintances,
but not finding him,
they returned to Jerusalem to look for him.
After three days they found him in the temple,
sitting in the midst of the teachers,
listening to them and asking them questions,
and all who heard him were astounded
at his understanding and his answers.
When his parents saw him,
they were astonished,
and his mother said to him,
"Son, why have you done this to us?
Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety."
And he said to them,
"Why were you looking for me?
Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?"
But they did not understand what he said to them.
He went down with them and came to Nazareth,
and was obedient to them;
and his mother kept all these things in her heart.

When his parents saw him, they were astonished,
and his mother said to him, “Son, why have you done this to us?
Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety.” - Luke
Growing up, my perfect cousin, Mary, annoyed me because no one could be that good. When our mothers sent us to the well, she returned with a full jug while half the water in mine had spilled. Mary never got her clothes dirty when we played and she shamed us girls for gossiping about our mean neighbor who reported everything we did to our parents.
I always felt rotten for how I felt about Mary because doesn’t resenting someone who is perfect make you a bad person? Then Mary’s son, Jesus, turned out to be just as perfect as she was while my Jacob was a wild man.
My feelings about Mary changed that awful day when our clan was returning from Jerusalem and she and Joseph realized Jesus was missing. I went with them to hunt for him.
For three long days, we searched for him. It was agony, especially for Mary. Like any mother whose child has gone missing, she couldn’t eat or sleep. Her vulnerability made her human. If only there had been some way to know that Jesus was fine!
Then we saw him in the Temple happily conversing with the elders even though he was only 12. Mary dashed frantically up to him, incredibly relieved. But being Mary, she merely chastised Jesus for causing her “great anxiety.” If it had been Jacob, I’d have yelled at him while I was hugging him.
Thankfully Jesus came with and resumed being perfect after spouting some nonsense about doing his father’s business. I guess even Jesus could be a mouthy 12-year-old.
That day changed my relationship with Mary. She was still perfect and I wasn’t but I had seen her terrified and vulnerable. I could even confide in her about my problems with Jacob. In turn, she trusted me because I had been with her when she needed it. I learned that raising a strong-willed paragon who asked a lot of questions wasn’t easy either. She feared for his safety. What if Jesus got in trouble for defying the authorities?
Mary was right to be worried. I was with her at the cross when Jesus died. Now I ache for her terrible loss but it has made her more human and given her more empathy for others who suffer. Anyone in need can turn to her for help because she gets it. I LOVE my perfect cousin. Bless you, Mary.

FAITHFUL TILL DEATH?
“After the death of Jehoiada, the princes of Judah came and paid homage to the king, and the king then listened to them. They forsook the temple of the Lord.” —2 Chronicles 24:17-18
After the death of Jehoiada the priest, the Israelites forsook the temple of the Lord and served false gods. After a change of pastors, some parishioners don’t go to church as much anymore. After young people leave home, many leave the practice of their faith. After Christians are rejected by fellow parishioners, some drop out of ministry or become less active in their churches.
Our faith in Jesus, worship of the Lord, and service to His people might change because circumstances change. Our faith should move mountains, rather than mountains or even foothills moving our faith (see Mt 17:20). However, this firmness in our faith can only happen by God’s grace and our willingness to accept His grace. If we realize we are weak and changeable, we will “be solicitous” to make our “call and election permanent” (2 Pt 1:10). We will discipline our bodies and master them (1 Cor 9:27). We will cry out in prayer for God’s grace, live in His Word (Jn 8:31), surround ourselves with His people (Heb 12:1), and obey the Pope and the leaders of the Church. When we realize we need all the help we can get to persevere in the faith, we will seek and find all the help we need. Be solicitous to be faithful.
Prayer: Father, may I never be unfaithful to You, no matter how many turn away from You.
Promise: “Let tomorrow take care of itself.” —Mt 6:34
Praise: In a private revelation, the Blessed Mother appeared to three Portuguese shepherd children in 1917 at Fatima. Since then, devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary has increased.

“His mother kept all these things in her heart”
Do you know the pain and grief of losing someone close to you? Mary and Joseph must have felt anxious and helpless when the boy Jesus disappeared. Nonetheless they returned to Jerusalem with confident trust that God would guide them in their hour of trial.
Why did Jesus stay back in Jerusalem when his parents left for home? Just as the prophet Samuel heard the call of the Lord at a very young age, Jesus in his youth recognized that he has been given a call by his heavenly Father. His answer to his mother's anxious inquiry reveals his trusting faith and confident determination to pursue his heavenly Father's will. Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house? Our Heavenly Father calls each of us. With the call God gives grace - grace to say "yes" to his will and grace to persevere through obstacles and trials. Do you recognize God's call on your life and do you trust in his grace?
"Lord Jesus, in love you have called me to live for your praise and glory. May I always find joy in your presence and trust in your wise and loving plan for my life."
Psalm 103:1-5, 8-13
1 Bless the LORD, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless his holy name!
2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits,
3 who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases,
4 who redeems your life from the Pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
5 who satisfies you with good as long as you live so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.
8 The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
9 He will not always chide, nor will he keep his anger for ever.
10 He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor requite us according to our iniquities.
11 For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;
12 as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions
Daily Quote from the early church fathers: Mary dwelt in meditation on Jesus' words and actions, by Bede the Venerable, 672-735 A.D.
"Consider the most prudent woman Mary, mother of true Wisdom, as the pupil of her Son. For she learned from him, not as from a child or man but as from God. Yes, she dwelt in meditation on his words and actions. Nothing of what was said or done by him fell idly on her mind. As before, when she conceived the Word itself in her womb, so now does she hold within her his ways and words, cherishing them as it were in her heart. That which she now beholds in the present, she waits to have revealed with greater clarity in the future. This practice she followed as a rule and law through all her life."
