Reading 1
Acts 13:44-52
On the following sabbath
almost the whole city
gathered to hear the word of the Lord.
When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy
and with violent abuse contradicted what Paul said.
Both Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said,
“It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first,
but since you reject it
and condemn yourselves as unworthy of eternal life,
we now turn to the Gentiles.
For so the Lord has commanded us,
I have made you a light to the Gentiles,
that you may be an instrument of salvation
to the ends of the earth.”
The Gentiles were delighted when they heard this
and glorified the word of the Lord.
All who were destined for eternal life came to believe,
and the word of the Lord continued to spread
through the whole region.
The Jews, however, incited the women of prominence who were worshipers
and the leading men of the city,
stirred up a persecution against Paul and Barnabas,
and expelled them from their territory.
So they shook the dust from their feet in protest against them
and went to Iconium.
The disciples were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.

Gospel
Jesus said to his disciples:
“If you know me, then you will also know my Father.
From now on you do know him and have seen him.”
Philip said to Jesus,
“Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.”
Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you for so long a time
and you still do not know me, Philip?
Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.
How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?
The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own.
The Father who dwells in me is doing his works.
Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me,
or else, believe because of the works themselves.
Amen, amen, I say to you,
whoever believes in me will do the works that I do,
and will do greater ones than these,
because I am going to the Father.
And whatever you ask in my name, I will do,
so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
If you ask anything of me in my name, I will do it.”

«I am in the Father and the Father is in me»
Fr. Jacques PHILIPPE
(Cordes sur Ciel, France)
Today, we are invited to recognize the Father who reveals himself in Jesus Christ. Philip articulates a very fair intuition: «Lord, show us the Father and it is enough for us» (Jn 14:8). To see the Father is to discover God as the origin, as the life that flows, as generosity, as a gift that constantly renews everything. What else do we need? We are coming from God, and each man, even if unconsciously, carries the profound desire of going back to God, of recuperating the fatherly home and remain there forever. There we can find all the possessions we may strive for: life, light, love, peace… St. Ignatius of Antioch, a martyr at the beginning of the second century, expressed it eloquently: «There is in me living water that murmurs within me: 'Come to the Father'!».
Jesus makes us glimpse the existing deep reciprocal intimacy between Him and the Father. «I am in the Father and the Father is in me» (Jn 14:11). What Jesus says and does emanates from the Father, and the Father fully expresses Himself in Jesus. Whatever the Father wants to tell us is to be found in the Son's words and deeds. All He wants to fulfill for us He fulfills through His Son. To believe in the Son allows us to have «access to the Father» (Eph 2:18).
—The humble and faithful faith in Jesus, our choice to follow and obey Him, day after day, connects us mysteriously but truly with the very mystery of God, while making us recipients of all the riches of His kindness and mercy. This faith lets the Father execute, through us, the work of grace He began in His Son: «Whoever believes in me will do the works that I do» (Jn 14:12).
«Everything you ask in calling upon my Name, I will do»
Fr. Iñaki BALLBÉ i Turu
(Terrassa, Barcelona, Spain)
Today, 4th Saturday of Easter, the Church invites us to consider how important it is for all Christians to be aware that they need to know Christ more and more. Which tools can we rely upon for this? Several, and all of them fundamental: well pondered and attentive reading of the Gospel; our personal involvement when praying, by trying hard to make our prayers become a true dialogue of love, not a mere introspective monologue, and the daily renewed effort to discover Christ in our fellow men: our relatives, our friends, a neighbor perhaps in need of our attention and help, of our advice, of our friendship.
«Lord, show us the Father», asks Philip (Jn 14:8). A good request for us to keep on repeating all this Saturday. —Lord, show me your face. And we may wonder: how is our behavior? Can others see Christ's reflection in me? What little thing could I fight for today? We Christians must find that divine something in our daily chores; God's footprint in all that surrounds us. In our job, in our social life amongst others, everywhere! Or, when we are sick, too: when we are ill it is a good time for us to identify ourselves with a suffering Christ. As St. Therese of the Child Jesus said, «if we do not decide ourselves to swallow once and for all our death and our lack of health, we shall never do anything».
The Lord of the Gospel assures us: «Everything you ask in my name, I will do» (Jn 14:13). —God is my Father and, as a loving Father, He looks after me: He does not want anything to hurt me. Everything that happens —everything that happens to me— is meant for my sanctification. Even though, with our own human eyes we might not understand it. Even though if we can never understand it. That thing —whatever it is— happens because God allows it to happen. Let us trust him just as the Virgin Mary trusted him too.

Yesterday, as I watched our parish’s Mass online, I observed one of our altar servers doing his normal great job of serving and lectoring. I have seen him serve for several years but have recently come to know him a little better because he has joined the ranks of our parish’s seminarians. He is unique in many ways but one thing that has always impressed me is his ability to serve with only one hand. That really stood out to me yesterday, since I have had to do everything with one hand for several days now. I was involved in a freak accident and separated my AC. My right arm is in a sling. It was great watching Nathaniel serve. He never complains and nothing slows him down. Then I gazed upon the crucifix of our Lord and the thought came to me of how easy it is to live our lives and not realize how good we have it. There is pain with a separated AC but look at that crucifix, George. There is the inconvenience of having to use one hand temporarily, but look at Nathaniel, George. If Jesus can endure the cross and Nathaniel can navigate life with one hand, what do I have to complain about and what can I not accomplish by the grace of God?
Nothing slowed down Paul and Barnabas either. Most of us want to be loved and they were no different but they endured hostility, hatred, and rejection. But because of their endurance, “The disciples were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit."
The psalmist says that the right hand of the Lord has won victory for him. He has brought salvation and justice to the nations. My immobilized right hand and arm actually talk to me and say, Learn a lesson from us: you cannot save yourself. only God’s right hand can do that. But here’s the deal: he has done it. So, sing joyfully to the Lord, all you lands; break into song; sing praise.
Jesus said, if you ask anything in my name, I will do it. But I only have one hand. Ask anyway. I can’t walk. Ask. I’m not good with words. When are you going to ask? “Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father.”
My right arm doesn’t work. I’m glad God’s does. So, believe, George, and get on with the work of God.

the present of his presence
"The disciples could not but be filled with joy and the Holy Spirit." —Acts 13:52
If you were persecuted and thrown out of town, what would you be filled with? Bitterness? Hatred? Fear? Or would you be filled with joy and the Holy Spirit?
What if you were seized, led off to court, and lied about by false witnesses? (Acts 6:12-13) What would be the expression on your face? Would you be stoic, livid, or disturbed? "Throughout, Stephen's face seemed like that of an angel" (Acts 6:15).
If several people were grinding their teeth in anger against you and preparing to charge and kill you (Acts 7:54ff), what would have your attention? "Stephen meanwhile, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked to the sky above and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at God's right hand" (Acts 7:55).
If you have been repeatedly treated harshly for years by a bad and unreasonable employer, did you "suffer injustice and endure hardship" through your "awareness of God's presence"? (1 Pt 2:19)
Most of us who read this teaching believe that God is present with us and within us. However, it makes a great difference how deeply we are aware of His presence. If we let the Holy Spirit teach us how to "practice the presence of God," we will have joy, peace, freedom, endurance, and hope. This would be impossible to have without a deep awareness of God's presence. God is always present to us. Will we be present to Him?
Prayer: Father, send the Holy Spirit to cry out in my heart "Abba" (Gal 4:6).
Promise: "I solemnly assure you, the man who has faith in Me will do the works I do, and greater far than these." —Jn 14:12
Praise: When James cannot get to Mass early for Eucharistic adoration, he stays afterward to spend more time with his Beloved.

"Lord, show us the Father"
What's the greatest thing we can aim for in this life? - Is it not to know God personally as your Father and Redeemer? What is the best thing we can possess in this life, bringing more joy, contentment, life and happiness, than anything else? - Is it not true knowledge and understanding of who God is and what kind of relationship he wants to have with you? Scripture tells us the greatest thing we can know and possess is true knowledge of God: Thus says the Lord: "Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, let not the mighty glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches; but let him who glories glory in this, that he understands and knows me" (Jeremiah 9:23-24).
We can know God the Father personally and be united with him
one of the greatest truths of the Christian faith is that we can know the living God. Our knowledge of God is not simply limited to knowing something about God, but we can know God personally. The essence of Christianity, and what makes it distinct from Judaism and other religions, is the personal knowledge of God as our Father.
Jesus makes it possible for each of us to personally know God as our heavenly Father. To see Jesus is to see what God is like. In Jesus we see the perfect love of God - a God who cares intensely and who yearns over men and women, loving them to the point of laying down his life for them upon the Cross. Jesus is the revelation of God - a God who loves us unconditionally, unselfishly and perfectly - without neglecting or forgetting us even for a brief moment. If we put our trust in Jesus and believe in him, Jesus promises that God the Father will hear our prayers when we pray in his name. That is why Jesus taught his followers to pray with confidence, Our Father who art in heaven ..give us this day our daily bread (Matthew 6:9,11; Luke 11:2-3). Do you pray to your Father in heaven with joy and confidence in his personal love and care for you?
"Lord Jesus, you fill us with the joy of your saving presence and you give us the hope of everlasting life with God our Father in Heaven. Show me the Father that I may know and glorify him always."
Psalm 98:1-4
1 O sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things! His right hand and his holy arm have gotten him victory.
2 The LORD has made known his victory, he has revealed his vindication in the sight of the nations.
3 He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God.
4 Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises!
Daily Quote from the early church fathers: The Father's portrait in the Son, by Ambrose of Milan, 339-397 A.D.
"By means of this image the Lord showed Philip the Father. Yes, he who looks on the Son sees, in portrait, the Father. Notice what kind of portrait is spoken of. It is truth, righteousness, the power of God. It is not silent, for it is the Word. It is not insensible, for it is Wisdom. It is not vain and foolish, for it is power. It is not soulless, for it is the life. It is not dead, for it is the resurrection." (excerpt from ON THE CHRISTIAN FAITH 1.7.50)
