Reading 1

1 Jn 5:5-13

Beloved:
Who indeed is the victor over the world
but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

This is the one who came through water and Blood, Jesus Christ,
not by water alone, but by water and Blood.
The Spirit is the one who testifies,
and the Spirit is truth.
So there are three who testify,
the Spirit, the water, and the Blood,
and the three are of one accord.
If we accept human testimony,
the testimony of God is surely greater.
Now the testimony of God is this,
that he has testified on behalf of his Son.
Whoever believes in the Son of God
has this testimony within himself.
Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar
by not believing the testimony God has given about his Son.
And this is the testimony:
God gave us eternal life,
and this life is in his Son.
Whoever possesses the Son has life;
whoever does not possess the Son of God does not have life.

I write these things to you so that you may know
that you have eternal life,
you who believe in the name of the Son of God.

Responsorial Psalm

Ps 147:12-13, 14-15, 19-20

R. (12a) Praise the Lord, Jerusalem.
or:
R. Alleluia.
Glorify the LORD, O Jerusalem;
praise your God, O Zion.
For he has strengthened the bars of your gates;
he has blessed your children within you.
R. Praise the Lord, Jerusalem.
or:
R. Alleluia.
He has granted peace in your borders;
with the best of wheat he fills you.
He sends forth his command to the earth;
swiftly runs his word!
R. Praise the Lord, Jerusalem.
or:
R. Alleluia.
He has proclaimed his word to Jacob,
his statutes and his ordinances to Israel.
He has not done thus for any other nation;
his ordinances he has not made known to them. Alleluia.
R. Praise the Lord, Jerusalem.
or:
R. Alleluia.

Gospel

Lk 5:12-16

It happened that there was a man full of leprosy in one of the towns where Jesus was;
and when he saw Jesus,
he fell prostrate, pleaded with him, and said,
“Lord, if you wish, you can make me clean.”
Jesus stretched out his hand, touched him, and said,
“I do will it. Be made clean.”
And the leprosy left him immediately.
Then he ordered him not to tell anyone, but
“Go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing
what Moses prescribed; that will be proof for them.”
The report about him spread all the more,
and great crowds assembled to listen to him
and to be cured of their ailments,
but he would withdraw to deserted places to pray.

«The news about Jesus spread all the more»

Fr. Santi COLLELL i Aguirre
(La Garriga, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, it is our responsibility to make sure that «the news about Jesus» (Lk 5:15) keeps on spreading; mainly among those that do not know Him or who, for one reason or other, have moved away from Him.

However, this will not be possible unless we have not been previously able to identify our own particular “leprosy” and to approach Christ with our sincere belief that only He can deliver us for good from all our selfishness, jealousy, pride and bitterness...

Whether the news about Jesus largely spreads all over depends upon the “particular meetings” we may previously have had with Him. The deeper His Gospel, His love, His capacity to listen, to shelter, to forgive, to accept the other (no matter how different he or she may be) reaches into our hearts, the better we shall be able to spread His name around us.

The leper of the Gospel we read today about in the Eucharist is someone who has made a double exercise of humility. To recognize his own ailments and to accept Jesus as his savior. It is Christ who gives us the opportunity to make a radical and deep change in our life. With His testimony of life and of New Life, Christ proposes to us a totally true and possible alternative against whatever impediment for loving is encrusted in our hearts and lives. The alternative of love, of tenderness, of mercy. Confronted by someone different, (the leper), Jesus does not run away, does not get rid of him, does not suggest that he instead, goes to administrations, official institutions or some “non-governmental organizations”. Christ does accept the encounter and offers the “ailing one” what he needs; i.e. cure and purification.

We must be able to offer all those approaching our lives what we have received from our Lord. But, first, we must have met with Him to renew our engagement to live His Gospel in the small things of our daily lives.

Even those of us who are not Biblical scholars likely know the story from today’s Gospel, in which a man with Leprosy begs Jesus to make him clean.  “Lord, if you wish….”… and of course, our Lord graced the man with a cure.  Surely Jesus knew, despite his request that the man not tell others of the miracle, that the story would spread.  Surely he knew that many, many more requests would come.

I recently saw the musical Jesus Christ Superstar for the second time.  In this production, I more clearly heard Judas in his anger toward Christ: “Why’d you let the things you do get so out of hand?” He thought that Jesus could have planned better, flown under the radar as it were, so as to keep safe.  But Jesus knew well the ultimate consequence of his actions and he took them anyway.

Deep down we, too, usually know or can predict the consequences that will follow from our choices – for ill or for good.  Sometimes we pray about them, and sometimes we even listen.  Sometimes we still choose incorrectly: we eat poorly, smoke that cigarette, hurt someone with an unkind word, spend too much.  But we all have the capacity to choose the right thing.  Even when it is difficult, even when it might come at some personal expense, even when we need to withdraw to a quiet place to pray about it.  We can choose, as Jesus did, to be with and for the other.

Lord, give me the courage and the grace to always be mindful of the needs of others, even as I move through my busy days.  Let me love and give to my neighbor as you taught me, and never ask the cost.  Amen.

THE TESTIMONY-TEST

"The testimony is this: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in His Son." 1 John 5:11

The purpose of life is to believe that Jesus is the Son of God and thereby receive eternal life (see Jn 20:31). The Holy Trinity has testified that Jesus is the Son of God. When Jesus emerged from the waters of His Baptism, God the Father testified that Jesus is His beloved Son (Mt 3:17). When Jesus shed His blood on the cross, the centurion testified: "Clearly this Man was the Son of God!" (Mk 15:39) "Jesus Christ it is Who came through water and blood not in water only, but in water and in blood. It is the Spirit Who testifies to this, and the Spirit is Truth. Thus there are three that testify" (1 Jn 5:6-7).

The Lord expects us to take the events of His life literally and the Scriptures seriously as valid testimony that Jesus is the Son of God. "Whoever does not believe God has made God a liar by refusing to believe in the testimony He has given on His own Son's behalf" (1 Jn 5:10). "I have written this to you to make you realize that you possess eternal life you who believe in the name of the Son of God" (1 Jn 5:13).

On this third last day of Christmas, let us not only deepen our faith in the Trinitarian testimony that Jesus is the Son of God. Let us also cry out to the Holy Spirit to give us the power to testify for Jesus to the maximum (see 2 Tm 1:6-8). This year, may we not miss any opportunities to help others receive eternal life by coming to faith in Jesus as the Son of God. May this be the year of eternal life, faith, and evangelization.

Prayer: Father, give me the great Christmas gift: zeal to evangelize.
Promise: "Jesus stretched out His hand to touch him and said, 'I do will it. Be cured.' Immediately the leprosy left him." —Lk 5:13
Praise: Phoebe has learned that her suffering is just a test to prepare her for endurance. She trusts day by day in God's providence.

"Lord, you can make me clean"

Do you seek the Lord Jesus with expectant faith? No one who sought Jesus out was refused his help. Even the untouchables and the outcasts of Jewish society found help in him. Unlike the people of Jesus' time who fled at the sight of a leper, Jesus touched the leper who approached him and he made him whole and clean. Why was this so remarkable? Lepers were outcasts of society. They were driven from their homes and communities and left to fend for themselves. Their physical condition was terrible as they slowly lost the use of their limbs and withered away. They were not only shunned but regarded as "already dead" even by their relatives. The Jewish law forbade anyone from touching or approaching a leper, lest ritual defilement occur.

This leper did something quite remarkable. He approached Jesus confidently and humbly, expecting that Jesus could and would heal him. Normally a leper would be stoned or at least warded off if he tried to come near a rabbi. Jesus not only grants the man his request, but he demonstrates the personal love, compassion, and tenderness of God in his physical touch. The medical knowledge of his day would have regarded such contact as grave risk for incurring infection. Jesus met the man's misery with compassion and tender kindness. He communicated the love and mercy of God in a sign that spoke more eloquently than words. He touched the man and made him clean - not only physically but spiritually as well.

How do you approach those who seem difficult to love, or who are shunned by others because they are deformed or have some physical or mental weakness? Do you show them kindness and offer them mercy and help as Jesus did? The Lord Jesus is always ready to show us his mercy and to free us from whatever makes us unclean, unapproachable, or unloving.

Lord Jesus, inflame my heart with your love and make me clean and whole in body, mind, and spirit. May I never doubt your love nor cease to tell others of your mercy and compassion."

Psalm 147:12-15,19-20

12 Praise the LORD, O Jerusalem! Praise your God, O Zion!
13 For he strengthens the bars of your gates; he blesses your sons within you.
14 He makes peace in your borders; he fills you with the finest of the wheat.
15 He sends forth his command to the earth; his word runs swiftly.
19 He declares his word to Jacob, his statutes and ordinances to Israel.
20 He has not dealt thus with any other nation; they do not know his ordinances. Praise the LORD!

Daily Quote from the early church fathers: Jesus' healing demonstrates the power of the kingdom of heaven, by Ambrose of Milan, 339-397 A.D.

"The authority of power in the Lord is here compared with the steadfastness of faith manifest in the leper (Luke 5:12-13). He fell on his face because it is a mark of humility and modesty that each feel shame for the sins of his life, but shyness did not restrict his confession. He showed the wound, he begged for the remedy, and the very confession is full of piety and faith. 'If you will,' it says, 'you can make me clean'” He conceded the power to the Lord's will. But he doubted concerning the Lord's will, not as if unbelieving in piety, but as if aware of his own impurity, he did not presume. The Lord replies to him with a certain holiness. 'I will: be clean. And immediately the leprosy departed from him.' For there is nothing between God's command and his work, because the work is in the command. Thus he spoke, and they came into being (Psalm 33:9). You see that it cannot be doubted that the will of God is power. If, therefore, his will is power, those who affirm that the Trinity is of one will affirm that it is of one power. Thus the leprosy departed immediately. In order that you may understand the effect of healing, he added truth to the work." (excerpt from EXPOSITION OF THE GOSPEL OF LUKE 5.2–3)
