Reading 1
2 Sm 7:1-5, 8b-12, 14a, 16
and the LORD had given him rest from his enemies on every side,
he said to Nathan the prophet,
"Here I am living in a house of cedar,
while the ark of God dwells in a tent!"
Nathan answered the king,
"Go, do whatever you have in mind,
for the LORD is with you."
But that night the LORD spoke to Nathan and said:
"Go, tell my servant David, 'Thus says the LORD:
Should you build me a house to dwell in?
"'It was I who took you from the pasture
and from the care of the flock
to be commander of my people Israel.
I have been with you wherever you went,
and I have destroyed all your enemies before you.
And I will make you famous like the great ones of the earth.
I will fix a place for my people Israel;
I will plant them so that they may dwell in their place
without further disturbance.
Neither shall the wicked continue to afflict them as they did of old,
since the time I first appointed judges over my people Israel.
I will give you rest from all your enemies.
The LORD also reveals to you
that he will establish a house for you.
And when your time comes and you rest with your ancestors,
I will raise up your heir after you, sprung from your loins,
and I will make his Kingdom firm.
I will be a father to him,
and he shall be a son to me.
Your house and your Kingdom shall endure forever before me;
your throne shall stand firm forever.'"
Responsorial Psalm
Ps 89:2-3, 4-5, 27 and 29
The favors of the LORD I will sing forever;
through all generations my mouth shall proclaim your faithfulness.
For you have said, "My kindness is established forever";
in heaven you have confirmed your faithfulness.
R. For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.
"I have made a covenant with my chosen one,
I have sworn to David my servant:
Forever will I confirm your posterity
and establish your throne for all generations."
R. For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.
"He shall say of me, 'You are my father,
my God, the rock, my savior.'
Forever I will maintain my kindness toward him,
and my covenant with him stands firm."
R. For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.
Gospel
Lk 1:67-79
Zechariah his father, filled with the Holy Spirit, prophesied, saying:
"Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;
for he has come to his people and set them free.
He has raised up for us a mighty Savior,
born of the house of his servant David.
Through his prophets he promised of old
that he would save us from our enemies,
from the hands of all who hate us.
He promised to show mercy to our fathers
and to remember his holy covenant.
This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:
to set us free from the hand of our enemies,
free to worship him without fear,
holy and righteous in his sight
all the days of our life.
You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High,
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,
to give his people knowledge of salvation
by the forgiveness of their sins.
In the tender compassion of our God
the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death,
and to guide our feet into the way of peace."

«Comes from on high as a rising sun shining on those who live in darkness»
Fr. Ignasi FABREGAT i Torrents
(Terrassa, Barcelona, Spain)
Today, the Gospel gathers Zechariah's song of praise after the birth of his son. In its first part John the Baptist's father thanks God, and in the second, his eyes look forward into the future. He oozes joy and hope on recognizing the salvific action of God toward Israel, which culminates in the coming of the Messiah, prepared by his own son John.
We already know that Zechariah had been punished by God because of his skepticism. Now, however, that the divine action has been made real —as he has recovered his ability to speak— says what he before could express only in his heart: «Blessed be the Lord God of Israel» (Lk 1:68). How Many times do we see the dark side of things, negatively, in a pessimistic way! If only we had the supernatural vision of the facts that Zechariah shows in the Benedictus, we would be constantly living in joy and hope.
«The Lord is at hand; the Lord is here». The forerunner's father is conscious of the fact that the arrival of the Messiah means, above all, light. A light that illuminates those who live in darkness and in the shadow of death. Us! May we realize with full consciousness that Jesus came to illuminate our lives, that he is coming to guide us, to point out the way to go... It would be great if we were to allow Him guide us with His desires, with the hope he has invested in us!
Jesus is the “Lord” (cf. Lk 1:68.76), but he is also the “Savior” (cf. Lk 1:69). These two attributes that Zechariah points to about God, so close to Christmas eve, have always surprised me, because they are precisely the same ones that the Angel of the Lord will assign to Jesus in its announcement to the shepherds and that we will hear touchingly tonight at Midnight Mass. It is God Himself who is born!

The words at the end of this morning’s Gospel are among the most passionate and tender of all the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures.
In the tender compassion of our God, the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death
And to guide our feet into the way of peace.
Witnessed in Luke’s Gospel as the prophetic utterance of John the Baptist’s father, Zachariah, these words pour forth from what had been the prophet’s mute tongue. His unbelief at the promise of God is transformed into belief and eternal pronouncement by the Holy Spirit, and the words fill our hearts and souls with the Father’s response to our darkened and sinful world.
To shine on those who dwell in darkness . . . and death
The dawn from on high has broken upon us in the birth of the infant in Bethlehem just six months after Zechariah’s prophetic announcement. John would tell the world that one is coming, and indeed is now among God’s people, that has been sought for all generations of human life. The one whose being is the light that dawns to dispel all darkness and conquer all death has entered the created order and transformed our future into hope through the justice and mercy of God. We celebrate again to know and to remember this ultimate truth:
The dawn from on high shall break (has broken) upon us . . .
Several days ago, I stood at the back door in the cold December, facing the clear eastern sky where the stars were fading and faint pre-dawn shadows of the Bluffs across the river were beginning to take on color. Suddenly the sky blazed with gold, rose and white streaks of diamond clear brightness, the dawning light announcing a clear, perfect and clean morning on the world of Eastern Nebraska.
Exhausted as I was by the trauma of world and national news, saddened by the death of a friend, impatient with the petty conflicts of overworked and weary co-workers, burdened by a long day ahead prepared for by a night short of sleep, I was totally stunned by the beauty, the promise, the glorious promise of “dearest freshness deep down things.” I startled myself and my little dog as I cried out Zechariah’s doxology:
In the tender compassion of our God, the dawn from on high shall break upon us . . and guide our feet into the WAY.
All the darkness and shadow of death passed from my heart as I stood there in astonishment, captivated by nature’s repetition of the age-old promise of salvation, made present in a child who has come, is coming, and will eternally come into my heart bearing the peace for which my whole being yearns.
As we sing in the Christmas festival tonight may your celebration of the sending of God’s Son into our broken world bring you every gift of grace you long for on this Vigil of Eternal-Mercy-outpouring wherever you are in God’s world!
Oh, Radiant dawn, splendor of eternal light . . . come . . .

ADVENT PREGNANCY | ||
"Zechariah his father, filled with the Holy Spirit, uttered this prophecy..." Luke 1:67
To give birth, a mother must be pregnant for approximately nine months. To give birth this Christmas, a Christian must be filled with Jesus for at least a few weeks. The birth of every creature requires a pregnancy of varying duration. Have you carried the baby long enough? Have you reached full term? How far apart are the contractions? Tomorrow is birth day, Jesus' birthday. Are you ready for birthing? Zechariah went through the nine-month pregnancy with his wife. It was a difficult pregnancy. He was deaf and dumb, and at the end of nine months was hardly any closer to bringing forth life. Yet finally he obeyed the Lord; "his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed" (Lk 1:64). He gave birth to a prophecy that has echoed throughout the ages: "Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel because He has visited and ransomed His people" (Lk 1:68). Nathan heard about David's plan of building God a house. He went to sleep that night and woke up laboring to give birth to the greatest prophecy of the old covenant, the establishing of David's house forever (2 Sm 7:16). You have reached the full term of Advent pregnancy. Expect to go into labor soon and deliver the prophetic Word.
Prayer: Jesus, I can hardly wait for the birth of Your new life. Come, Lord Jesus! (Rv 22:20)
Promise: "He, the Dayspring, shall visit us in His mercy to shine on those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace." —Lk 1:78-79
Praise: Praise to You, Jesus, for coming to us as a helpless Baby. Help us to make a proper place for you in the cradle of our heart. |

Nothing is impossible with God
Does the proclamation of the Gospel message fill you with joy and hope? When the Lord comes to redeem us he fills us with his Holy Spirit, the source of our joy and hope in the promises of God.
Filled with the Holy Spirit and the inspired Word of God
John the Baptist was born shortly before Mary delivered her son, Jesus. When John was circumcised on the eighth day according to the Jewish rite, his father Zechariah was "filled with the Holy Spirit" and with great joy. Inspired by the Holy Spirit he spoke out a prophetic word and hymn of blessing for the work of redemption which God was about to accomplish in Christ. He foresaw the fulfillment of God's promise to David and his descendants that David's dynasty would endure forever through the coming of the Messianic King (2 Samuel 7:16). This King would establish peace and security for his people. We often think of peace as the absence of trouble. The peace which the Messiah brings cancels the debt of sin and restores our broken relationship with God.
Do you know the tender mercy and forgiveness of the Savior?
The Holy Spirit gave Zechariah a vision for his own son as a prophet and forerunner who would prepare the way for the Messiah. Every devout Jew longed for the day when the Messiah would come. Now Zechariah knows beyond a doubt that that day is very near. Like Zechariah, the Holy Spirit wants to give us vision, joy, and confidence in the knowledge of God's merciful love, protection, and care which he offers us through his Son Jesus Christ. Like the Baptist, we too are called to prepare the way that leads to Christ. Life is a journey and we are either moving towards the Lord or away from the Lord. The Lord comes to visit us each day with his life-giving Word and Spirit. Those who hunger for the Lord will not be disappointed. He will draw them to himself and show them his love and mercy.
In sending the Messiah God has made a gracious visit to his people to redeem them. This was the mission for which Jesus Christ was sent into the world - to redeem those sold for sin and sold under sin. In the feast of the Incarnation we celebrate the gracious gift of God in sending his only begotten Son to redeem us. Let us pray that the Holy Spirit may inspire us and fill us with joy and boldness to proclaim the message of the Lord's visitation and redemption.
"Lord Jesus, you have been gracious and merciful towards your people. Fill me with your Holy Spirit that I may bear witness to the joy of the Gospel to those around me."
Psalm 89:2-5, 27, 29
2 For your steadfast love was established for ever, your faithfulness is firm as the heavens.
3 You have said, "I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to David my servant:
4 `I will establish your descendants for ever, and build your throne for all generations.'" [Selah]
5 Let the heavens praise your wonders, O LORD, your faithfulness in the assembly of the holy ones!
27 And I will make him the first-born, the highest of the kings of the earth.
28 My steadfast love I will keep for him for ever, and my covenant will stand firm for him.
29 I will establish his line for ever and his throne as the days of the heavens.
A Daily Quote from the early church fathers: My words will not pass away, by an anonymous early author from the Greek church
"'O forerunner of Christ!... O Baptist inspired by God! We glorify Christ who bowed his head before you in the Jordan and sanctified the nature of mortal humankind... O wise John the forerunner, you have looked down from the bank of the river upon the glory of the Father's Word, even the Son as he stood in the waters; and you have seen the Spirit descend as a dove, cleansing and enlightening the ends of the earth. To you the mystery of the Trinity was revealed; and to you we sing, honoring your divine festival.
"O Baptist and forerunner, strengthened by the divine grace of Christ you have shown us the lamb that takes away all the sins of the world (John 1:29,35-36), and with joy you have this day brought two disciples to him (John 1:35-42). Entreat him that peace and great mercy may be given to our souls." (excerpt from SYNAXIS OF JOHN THE BAPTIST)
