로마서. 7,18-25ㄱ
형 제 여러분, 18 내 안에, 곧 내 육 안에 선이 자리 잡고 있지 않음을 나는 압니다. 나에게 원의가 있기는 하지만 그 좋은 것을 하지는 못합니다. 19 선을 바라면서도 하지 못하고, 악을 바라지 않으면서도 그것을 하고 맙니다. 20 그래서 내가 바라지 않는 것을 하면, 그 일을 하는 것은 더 이상 내가 아니라 내 안에 자리 잡은 죄입니다.
21 여기에서 나는 법칙을 발견합니다. 내가 좋은 것을 하기를 바라는데도 악이 바로 내 곁에 있다는 것입니다. 22 나의 내적 인간은 하느님의 법을 두고 기뻐합니다. 23 그러나 내 지체 안에는 다른 법이 있어 내 이성의 법과 대결하고 있음을 나는 봅니다. 그 다른 법이 나를 내 지체 안에 있는 죄의 법에 사로잡히게 합니다.
24 나는 과연 비참한 인간입니다. 누가 이 죽음에 빠진 몸에서 나를 구해 줄 수 있습니까? 25 우리 주 예수 그리스도를 통하여 나를 구해 주신 하느님께 감사드립니다.

그때에 54 예수님께서 군중에게 말씀하셨다.
“너 희는 구름이 서쪽에서 올라오는 것을 보면 곧 ‘비가 오겠다.’ 하고 말한다. 과연 그대로 된다. 55 또 남풍이 불면 ‘더워지겠다.’ 하고 말한다. 과연 그대로 된다. 56 위선자들아, 너희는 땅과 하늘의 징조는 풀이할 줄 알면서, 이 시대는 어찌하여 풀이할 줄 모르느냐? 57 너희는 왜 올바른 일을 스스로 판단하지 못하느냐?
58 너를 고소한 자와 함께 재판관에게 갈 때, 도중에 그와 합의를 보도록 힘써라. 그러지 않으면 그가 너를 재판관에게 끌고 가, 재판관은 너를 옥리에게 넘기고 옥리는 너를 감옥에 가둘 것이다.
59 내가 너에게 말한다. 네가 마지막 한 닢까지 갚기 전에는 결코 거기에서 나오지 못할 것이다.”

Rom 7:18-25a
I know that good does not dwell in me, that is, in my flesh.
The willing is ready at hand, but doing the good is not.
For I do not do the good I want,
but I do the evil I do not want.
Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it,
but sin that dwells in me.
So, then, I discover the principle
that when I want to do right, evil is at hand.
For I take delight in the law of God, in my inner self,
but I see in my members another principle
at war with the law of my mind,
taking me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members.
Miserable one that I am!
Who will deliver me from this mortal body?

"When you see a cloud rising in the west
you say immediately that it is going to rain--and so it does;
and when you notice that the wind is blowing from the south
you say that it is going to be hot--and so it is.
You hypocrites!
You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky;
why do you not know how to interpret the present time?
"Why do you not judge for yourselves what is right?
If you are to go with your opponent before a magistrate,
make an effort to settle the matter on the way;
otherwise your opponent will turn you over to the judge,
and the judge hand you over to the constable,
and the constable throw you into prison.
I say to you, you will not be released
until you have paid the last penny.

Today, Jesus is asking us to look up and watch the skies. This morning, after three days of continuous rain, the sky has appeared clear and radiant, in one of the most splendid days of this Fall. By and by, now that the weathermen are like family members, we become more conversant with weather changes. But, on the other hand, we find many more difficulties to understand the changing times in which we live: «You understand the signs of the earth and the sky, but you don't understand the present times» (Lk 12:56). Amongst those listening to Jesus, many let go a unique chance in the history of Mankind. They could not identify the Son of God in Jesus. They didn't know the time, the hour of salvation.
The II Vatican Council, in the Constitution Gaudium et spes (n. 4), updates today's Gospel: «In every age, the church carries the responsibility of reading the signs of the times and of interpreting them in the light of the Gospel (…) We must be aware of and understand the aspirations, the yearnings, and the often dramatic features of the world in which we live».
When we are making history, it is not too difficult to point out at the occasions lost by the Church for not having discovered the time in which we were living. But, Lord: what occasions are we perhaps wasting now for not being able to read the signs of the times, or what is tantamount, for not being able to live and throw light upon today's problems with the light shed by the Gospel? Today, Jesus reminds us once more:«And why do you not judge for yourselves what is fit?» (Lk 12:57).
We are not living in a world of wickedness, though there may be plenty of it. But God has not forsaken his world. As St. John of the Cross reminds us, we live in a world, which the very God treaded on and made beautiful. Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta saw the signs of the times, and the times have understood Mother Teresa of Calcutta. Let her invigorate us. Let us keep on looking upwards without losing sight of our earth.

Taken out of context in Paul’s long letter to the Romans, it would appear in today’s reading from Romans Chapter 7 that Paul was having a very bad day. It seems as though he is possibly overreacting to a particular weakness he had.
It’s simple, right? Do the right thing. We usually know, if we listen to our conscience, what is right. So why is it sometimes so difficult to follow that path? Is it because of sin in us, as Paul says?
Sometimes we do sin. But sometimes, the lesser choice isn’t necessarily sinful. It may just be the weaker choice, or the less-perfect choice. It may not be evil; it may just not be as good. Does choosing the less-good act offend God? I believe it may sadden God, but I believe God is understanding, and sends us kindness and compassion, as the psalmist requests in today’s responsorial psalm.
But sometimes, like Paul says, we really are at war within ourselves.
We really know a particular action or thought is sinful. It destroys instead of building up. It contains falsehood instead of truth. It idolizes a false god, such as money or power or ego, instead of submitting to the one true God, Who is love.
But even then, as Paul states many times, especially in this letter to the Romans, Jesus saves. In the end, we cannot save ourselves. Jesus extends his saving hand, but we have to grasp it. We have to take hold of his hand or we lose out on what he is offering – in this life, and the next.

FROM CERTAIN DEFEAT TO TOTAL VICTORY | ||

There is a civil war going on inside us. We are compelled to do not the good we will to do but the evil we do not intend (Rm 7:19). We are even forced to wage war on our own souls when we satisfy our carnal desires (1 Pt 2:11). All human beings by nature cannot help but lose this interior war. We are thus prisoners of war (see Rm 7:23). We are in a wretched condition. Each of us cries out: "Who can free me from this body under the power of death?" (Rm 7:24) The answer to the human dilemma is: "All praise to God, through Jesus Christ our Lord!" (Rm 7:25) Jesus is our only Hope, and the only Hope we need. The name of Jesus is the only name by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12). Jesus is the only Way out of our wretchedness, defeat, and slavery (see Jn 14:6). Jesus is the only Way to victory over our fallen nature, Satan, and the world (see Jn 14:6). We receive a new nature and life in Christ when we are baptized. To live "through Him, with Him, and in Him," we must live our Baptisms with all our hearts, souls, minds, and strength (Mk 12:30). Therefore, let us renew again our baptismal promises. Reject Satan, all his works, and all his empty promises. Believe in God the Father through the Son and in the Holy Spirit. Live fully your Baptism into Jesus (Rm 6:3). Be free and victorious. | ||

Heed the warning signs before it is too late
How good are you at reading warning signs? Jesus expects his disciples to accurately read the signs of the times! Seafarers and farmers know the importance of spotting weather conditions for safe travel and planting. A lot of effort is made today, with the help of science and technology, to discern potential natural dangers, such as tropical storms, hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, earth quakes, and erupting volcanoes, so that people can be warned to take shelter before disaster hits.
Don't miss God's kingdom and power to transform your life
Our need for accurately discerning the spiritual condition and moral climate around us is vital if we want to avert spiritual crisis and moral disaster. The Lord is ready to transform our lives by offering us his kingdom of righteousness (moral goodness), peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit (Romans 14:17). - But we can miss it if we allow a permissive attitude that takes sin lightly or puts off repairing wrongdoing before it is too late to get reconciled with God.
Jesus used a very vivid illustration of a threatening lawsuit to show the urgency of settling a bad case outside of court before a worse sentence could be passed against us. Why did the neighbor in Jesus' story make an effort to come to an agreement with his adversary before the matter was sent to court for judgment? The accused knew that he had a bad case which would likely go against him in court. He quickly tried to come to an agreement with his adversary to avoid receiving a worse sentence of being thrown into prison and given a costly fine as well.
Jesus will set us free and fill us with the Holy Spirit
We all stand in need of God's mercy, grace, and protection. The Lord Jesus is our physician and healer and he is ready to set us free from any sinful patterns of thinking, acting, and speaking. If we give our lives over to him he will fill us with his Holy Spirit and give us a new heart and a transformed mind that is filled with his truth, love, and goodness. If you want lasting peace and joy with God, then allow the Lord Jesus to transform every area of your life, your home, your work, your relationships, and possessions so that he may truly be the Lord and Giver of abundant life and righteousness. Are you ready to surrender all to him - and to receive all from him?

"People focus their attention on things of this kind. From long observation and practice they tell beforehand when rain will fall or violent winds will blow. one especially sees that sailors are very skillful in this matter. He says that it would be suitable for those who can calculate things of this sort and may foretell storms that are about to happen to focus the penetrating eyes of the mind also on important matters. What are these? The law showed beforehand the mystery of Christ, that he would shine out in the last ages of the world on the inhabitants of the earth and submit to be a sacrifice for the salvation of all. It even commanded a lamb to be sacrificed as a type of him who died towards evening and at lighting of lamps (Exodus 12:6).
"We might now understand that when, like the day, this world was declining to its close, the great, precious and truly saving passion would be fulfilled.
