제1독서
요나 예언서. 3,1-10

Reading 1
Jon 3:1-10
"Set out for the great city of Nineveh,
and announce to it the message that I will tell you."
So Jonah made ready and went to Nineveh,
according to the LORD's bidding.
Now Nineveh was an enormously large city;
it took three days to go through it.
Jonah began his journey through the city,
and had gone but a single day's walk announcing,
"Forty days more and Nineveh shall be destroyed,"
when the people of Nineveh believed God;
they proclaimed a fast and all of them, great and small,
put on sackcloth.
When the news reached the king of Nineveh,
he rose from his throne, laid aside his robe,
covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in the ashes.
Then he had this proclaimed throughout Nineveh,
by decree of the king and his nobles:
"Neither man nor beast, neither cattle nor sheep,
shall taste anything;
they shall not eat, nor shall they drink water.
Man and beast shall be covered with sackcloth
and call loudly to God;
every man shall turn from his evil way
and from the violence he has in hand.
Who knows, God may relent and forgive,
and withhold his blazing wrath,
so that we shall not perish."
When God saw by their actions how they turned from their evil way,
he repented of the evil that he had threatened to do to them;
he did not carry it out.
Responsorial Psalm
Ps 130:1b-2, 3-4ab, 7-8
Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD
LORD, hear my voice!
Let your ears be attentive
to my voice in supplication.
R. If you, O Lord, mark iniquities, who can stand?
If you, O LORD, mark iniquities,
LORD, who can stand?
But with you is forgiveness,
that you may be revered.
R. If you, O Lord, mark iniquities, who can stand?
Let Israel wait for the LORD,
For with the LORD is kindness
and with him is plenteous redemption;
And he will redeem Israel
from all their iniquities.
R. If you, O Lord, mark iniquities, who can stand?
Gospel
Lk 10:38-42
where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him.
She had a sister named Mary
who sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak.
Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said,
"Lord, do you not care
that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving?
Tell her to help me."
The Lord said to her in reply,
"Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things.
There is need of only one thing.
Mary has chosen the better part
and it will not be taken from her."

«Martha, Martha, you worry and are troubled about many things, whereas only one thing is needed»
Fr. Josep RIBOT i Margarit
(Tarragona, Spain)
Today, as every day, we can learn from the Gospel. Jesus, invited to Martha's home in Bethany, gives us a lesson of humanity: He, who loved people, lets people love him, for both things are equally important. It would be a serious mistake, with harmful consequences for sanctity, to refuse God's and others' affection.
Martha or Mary? But..., why opposing those who loved each other so much and loved God too? Jesus loved Martha and Mary, and their brother Lazarus, and He loves each one of us, too.
on the path of sainthood not any two souls are exactly alike. We all try to love God, but within our own style and personality, without imitating anyone. Our models are Christ and the Mother of God. Do you resent how others treat God? Try to learn from his personal piety.
«Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do all the serving? Ask her therefore to help me» (Lk 10:40). To serve others, for the love of God, is an honor, not a burden. Do we serve with joy, as the Mother of God did with her cousin Elisabeth or at Cana's wedding, or as Jesus did when washing the Apostle's feet at the Last Supper?
«Martha, Martha, you worry and are troubled about many things, whereas only one thing is needed» (Lk 10:41-42). Let us lose neither our peace nor our good humor. And to accomplish it, let us take good care of God's presence. «Know it well: There is something holy, something divine, hidden in the most ordinary situations; and it is up to each person to discover it (…); either we learn to find our Lord in ordinary, everyday life, or else we shall never find him» (St. Josemaria).
«Mary has chosen the better part, and it will not be taken away from her» (Lk 10:42). God wants us happy. That our Mother in Heaven helps us to feel the joy of giving.

Not to Worry
“There was man who had two sons.” (Luke 15: 11). This wise father allowed his sons to pursue their own ways. The younger son demanded his “share of the property,” his inheritance. Freely the father gave it. Foolishly the son squander it. The father hoped his son would eventually return. The elder son did not ask for anything, was give nothing special, but remained faithful to his father, continued working his father’s property. In the end the younger son feeling unworthy, repented of his “sin”. The prodigal father welcomed his son home, celebrating with a “fatted calf”. The faithful elder son was angry and resentful towards his brother and their father. He was not given even a “fatted goat” in recognition of his faithfulness.(Culturally the “fatted calf” was more desirable and appreciated than a “fatted goat.”)
In today’s reading we hear about two sisters: Martha and Mary. In their culture, the women of the house extended hospitality to guests. Women prepared the food, waited on and served their guests. This was Martha, faithful to her role and familial duties as dictated by the culture of the time. Image her feelings toward Mary who neglecting her duties was sitting at Jesus’ feet! Possibly Martha felt anger, resentment. Embarrassed by Mary’s behavior – what would Jesus, think of Mary’s unexpected and unacceptable behavior. What could happen to Mary for disregarding her duties? At least reprimand by their family and community.
Back to Jesus and Mary. What’s going on here? Jesus addresses the sisters jointly:
Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things.
There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and
it will not be taken from her.”
What is the “better part”? We often think that means to sit at Jesus’ feet – which is always the best way to experience an intimate relationship with Jesus. However, could the “better part” mean something more? Could Jesus be inviting Mary to step beyond herself? Take a different path, whatever that may mean. Could Jesus be offering Mary a new way of being? Telling her it is OK. She does not have to live within the confines of the expectations of others. Jesus did not scold Martha. His words have a comforting, softness to them. “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried…”
This parable is not so much about Martha as it is about the intimacy of the relationship between Mary and Jesus. About my relationship with Jesus. We are not privy to Mary’s desires. We are invited into Jesus’ invitation to move beyond our comfort zone. To move out. To come closer.
There are always choices. In these two parables we hear of two brothers and two sisters who wrestle with their choices – their God initiated invitations and their not-of-God temptations. We hear the out come of one, but not of the others. What we do hear, what we do experience is the loving, attentive, comforting, and unconditional acceptances of the father. The Father. Of Jesus.
The Good news: Our Father and Jesus will always be present – unconditionally loving, encouraging us to step beyond ourselves – follow God’s invitations. To grow. To become. If at times we instead entertain the not-of-God temptations, God will always unconditionally, lovingly and lavishly embrace our return with forgiving hugs, kisses and a fatted calf! We are loved beyond measure. Not to worry.

BETTER YET... | ||
"Mary has chosen the better portion and she shall not be deprived of it." Luke 10:42
There are so many things in life we can't control. People can't choose their parents, siblings, their nation of birth, height, or skin color. So many things are beyond our control that we may be tempted to feel insignificant and without hope. Yet we have a great reason to rejoice. We have absolute control over having the Best. We are free to choose Jesus! When we choose Jesus for ourselves, we choose the Best. No other person can take us away from Him (Jn 10:28-29). Nothing can "separate us from" Jesus (Rm 8:39). Jesus promises us that we "shall not be deprived of" Him (Lk 10:42). However, the one person who can separate you from Jesus is yourself. When you choose the better portion and put your life in His hands, you allow Jesus to wrap you in His loving embrace. As long as you "fix your eyes on Jesus" (Heb 3:1), you will always see He is the "better portion" (Lk 10:42). Satan, who knows he cannot deprive you of Jesus, then attempts to distract you from looking always at Jesus. If he can get you to focus on distractions like TV, handheld electronic devices, pornography, sports, talk shows, gossip, controversies, worldly pleasures, and other "enticements for the eye" (1 Jn 2:16), he knows you might choose them as your "better portion." Then you might consider Jesus' loving embrace as a choke-hold and demand that He take His hands off you. Therefore, every day of your life, choose Jesus anew as your better portion. You shall not be deprived of Him.
Prayer: Jesus, I'd rather have You than anything else. Protect me from myself. Never let me be parted from You.
Promise: "With the Lord is kindness and with Him is plenteous redemption." —Ps 130:7

"You are anxious - one thing is needful"
Does the peace of Christ reign in your home and in your personal life? Jesus loved to visit the home of Martha and Mary and enjoyed their gracious hospitality. In this brief encounter we see two very different temperaments in Martha and Mary. Martha loved to serve, but in her anxious manner of waiting on Jesus, she caused unrest. Mary, in her simple and trusting manner, waited on Jesus by sitting attentively at his feet. She instinctively knew that what the Lord and Teacher most wanted at that moment was her attentive presence.
Give your concerns and pre-occupations to the Lord
Anxiety and preoccupation keep us from listening and from giving the Lord our undivided attention. The Lord bids us to give him our concerns and anxieties because he is trustworthy and able to meet any need we have. His grace frees us from needless concerns and preoccupation. Do you seek the Lord attentively? And does the Lord find a welcomed and honored place in your home?
Always welcome the Lord into your home and heart
The Lord Jesus desires that we make a place for him, not only in our hearts, but in our homes and in the daily circumstances of our lives as well. We honor the Lord when we offer to him everything we have and everything we do. After all, everything we have is an outright gift from God (1 Chronicles 29:14). Paul the Apostle urges us to give God glory in everything: "Whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him" (Colossians 3:17).
When you sit, eat, sleep and when you entertain your friends and guests, remember that the Lord Jesus is also the guest of your home. Scripture tells us that when Abraham opened his home and welcomed three unknown travelers, he welcomed the Lord who blessed him favorably for his gracious hospitality (Genesis 18:1-10; Hebrews 13:2). The Lord wants us to bring him glory in the way we treat others and use the gifts he has graciously given to us. God, in turn, blesses us with his gracious presence and fills us with joy.
"Lord Jesus, to be in your presence is life and joy for me. Free me from needless concerns and preoccupations that I may give you my undivided love and attention."
Psalm 130:1-8
1 Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD!
2 Lord, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications!
3 If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities, Lord, who could stand?
4 But there is forgiveness with you, that you may be feared.
5 I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in his word I hope;
6 my soul waits for the LORD more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning.
7 O Israel, hope in the LORD! For with the LORD there is steadfast love, and with him is plenteous redemption.
8 And he will redeem Israel from all his iniquities.
Daily Quote from the early church fathers: The Body of Christ needs hearers and doers of the Word, by Ambrose of Milan, 339-397 A.D.
"'Virtue does not have a single form. In the example of Martha and Mary, there is added the busy devotion of the one and the pious attention of the other to the Word of God, which, if it agrees with faith, is preferred even to the very works, as it is written: 'Mary has chosen the good portion, which shall not be taken away from her.' So let us also strive to have what no one can take away from us, so that not careless but diligent hearing may be granted to us. For even the seeds of the heavenly Word itself are likely to be taken away if they are sowed by the wayside (Luke 8:5,12). Let the desire for wisdom lead you as it did Mary. It is a greater and more perfect work. Do not let service divert the knowledge of the heavenly Word... Nor is Martha rebuked in her good serving, but Mary is preferred because she has chosen the better part for herself, for Jesus abounds with many blessings and bestows many gifts. And therefore the wiser chooses what she perceives as foremost." (excerpt from EXPOSITION OF THE GOSPEL OF LUKE 7.83-86)
