1독서

여호수아기. 24,14-29

Reading 1
Jos 24:14-29
Joshua gathered together all the tribes of Israel at Shechem,
 and addressed them, saying:
“Fear the LORD and serve him completely and sincerely.
Cast out the gods your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt,
 and serve the LORD.
If it does not please you to serve the LORD,
decide today whom you will serve,
the gods your fathers served beyond the River
or the gods of the Amorites in whose country you are dwelling.
As for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”

But the people answered, “Far be it from us to forsake the LORD
for the service of other gods.
For it was the LORD, our God,
who brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Egypt,
out of a state of slavery.
He performed those great miracles before our very eyes
and protected us along our entire journey and among all the peoples
 through whom we passed.
At our approach the LORD drove out all the peoples,
including the Amorites who dwelt in the land.
Therefore we also will serve the LORD, for he is our God.”

Joshua in turn said to the people,
“You may not be able to serve the LORD, for he is a holy God;
he is a jealous God who will not forgive
 your transgressions or your sins.
If, after the good he has done for you,
you forsake the LORD and serve strange gods,
he will do evil to you and destroy you.”

But the people answered Joshua, “We will still serve the LORD.”
Joshua therefore said to the people,
“You are your own witnesses that you have chosen to serve the LORD.”
They replied, “We are, indeed!”
Joshua continued:
“Now, therefore, put away the strange gods that are among you
and turn your hearts to the LORD, the God of Israel.”
Then the people promised Joshua,
“We will serve the LORD, our God, and obey his voice.”

So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day
and made statutes and ordinances for them at Shechem,
which he recorded in the book of the law of God.
Then he took a large stone and set it up there under the oak
that was in the sanctuary of the LORD.
And Joshua said to all the people, “This stone shall be our witness,
for it has heard all the words which the LORD spoke to us.
It shall be a witness against you, should you wish to deny your God.”
Then Joshua dismissed the people, each to his own heritage.

After these events, Joshua, son of Nun, servant of the LORD,
died at the age of a hundred and ten.

 Responsorial Psalm
16:1-2a and 5, 7-8, 11
R. (see 5a) You are my inheritance, O Lord.
 Keep me, O God, for in you I take refuge;
I say to the LORD, “My Lord are you.”
O LORD, my allotted portion and my cup,
you it is who hold fast my lot.
 R. You are my inheritance, O Lord.
 I bless the LORD who counsels me;
even in the night my heart exhorts me.
 I set the LORD ever before me;
with him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed.
 R. You are my inheritance, O Lord.
You will show me the path to life,
fullness of joys in your presence,
the delights at your right hand forever.
 R. You are my inheritance, O Lord.

 Gospel
Mt 19:13-15
Children were brought to Jesus
that he might lay his hands on them and pray.
The disciples rebuked them, but Jesus said,
“Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them;
for the Kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

After he placed his hands on them, he went away.

«Little children were brought to Jesus that He might lay his hands on them with a prayer»

Fr. Antoni CAROL i Hostench
(Sant Cugat del Vallès, Barcelona, Spain)

Today, we are given to contemplate a scene that, unfortunately, is a very real one now-a-days: «Little children were brought to Jesus that He might lay his hands on them with a prayer. But the disciples scolded those who brought them» (Mt 19:13). Children are especially loved by Jesus; but we, with our typical and characteristic reasoning of “adult people”, do not let them get close to Jesus and to the Father: —When they grow up, if they wish, they will choose...! What a great mistake!

The poor ones, that is, those needy, those who have nothing, are the object of a special predilection by the Lord. And children, infants, are indeed very “poor”. They are poor in age; they are poor in formation... They are defenseless. This is why, the Church —our “Mother”— has decided that parents should bring their children as soon as possible to the baptism, so that the Saint Spirit may inhabit in their souls and they may join the warmth of the community of believers. This is how it is stated by the Catechism of the Catholic Church as well as by the Code of Canon Law, legislators of a maximum rank of the Church (which, as any other community, must have its own legislation).

But no! when they are grown up! This way to proceed is a piece of nonsense. Otherwise, we can ask ourselves: —What will this child eat? What his mother will give him without specifying what he would prefer. —Or, what language will the child speak? The same as his parents (in other words, the child will never be able to choose any other language). —Which school will this child attend to? Wherever his parents will decide to take him, without waiting for him to define which studies will he prefer...

—What did Jesus eat? What his Mother, Mary, gave him. —What language did Jesus speak? His parents'. —What religion did Jesus Infant learn and practice? That of his parents, Judaism. Afterwards, as an adult, thanks to the formation his parents had given him, He founded a new religion... But, first, that of his parents, naturally.

Today’s Gospel immediately drew me back to my faith journey, from first learning about Jesus to where I am at today.  In the Gospel, Jesus informs us that heaven belongs to such as these, speaking of the children who sought Him out.

Traditionally I have always thought of this to be solely about how as a child we tend to think of ourselves and our faith as being pure and innocent, not corrupted by the world in which we live.  However, in thinking further about my childhood experiences, after taking off my rose colored glasses, was to ask if that was the case?  While blessed to have been brought up in a fantastic Catholic family, school, parish and neighborhood, with the great memories dwarfing the poor, there were many influences that could chip away at my faith.   Looking back anything from a skinned knee, to hurt feelings brought on by something that was said to me, to desiring a toy I couldn't have, to even being the source of hurting someone, all were a big deal at the time.

Realizing this, I now see that it is doubtful that I always come to Jesus with this pure and joyful innocent faith.  But I would come to Him far more often than I do today when the problems of the world seem to be all around. I would come to him then nightly with prayers, during the day in school, and in Mass.  I would come to him when I was sad, when I was joyful, and when I was having an average and mundane day. I would give praise to Him when something good happened and I would question how He could allow something that hurt me to happen.

In today’s world I find it harder to do this.  With a seemingly endless list of to do’s, in a culture that increasingly devalues open religious expression, it is no wonder that it is easy to slip into a pattern of unconscious indifference. So while this passage’s main message of coming to him in complete faith and trust holds true, it is a reminder to me to make time to come to him joyfully and frequently.  It is a reminder to shut off those devices and look forward to sitting in a quiet place and reflecting on whatever I may be feeling, looking forward to growing closer to God and discerning on what God is telling us through my experiences and prayer.

FAMILY MAN

"As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord." Joshua 24:15

Is your family so united that the father can speak for the whole family, as Joshua did? Are you of one heart and one mind," at least with your spouse? (Acts 4:32) Do your children share your faith in the Lord? Is your family united, or is it several independent, isolated individuals? The Lord is working at this moment to unite your family around Himself as the Center.

As each member of your family draws closer to Jesus, you will become closer to each other. The way to family unity is total commitment to Jesus. When even one family member seeks first God's kingdom, family life begins to fall into place (Mt 6:33). Turn your life and your family over to Jesus. He alone is the Savior. He alone can save the family.

Even if you feel it's too late for your family, don't believe what you see, but walk by faith (2 Cor 5:7). The Lord promises: "Those who oppose you I will oppose, and your sons" and daughters and spouses "I will save" (see Is 49:25 NAB). Jesus is Savior of you and your family. "That is why I kneel before the Father from Whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name; and I pray that He will bestow on you gifts in keeping with the riches of His glory. May He strengthen you inwardly through the working of His Spirit. May Christ dwell in your hearts through faith" (Eph 3:14-17). The family that prays together in Jesus' name stays together in unity.

Prayer: Jesus, do anything with my family You want, even things I don't understand.
Promise: "Children were brought to Him so that He could place His hands on them in prayer." —Mt 19:13
Praise: When James entered the Church as a new Catholic, so too did his wife and children.

"Let the children come to me"

Do you seek to help others draw near to the Lord?
The parents who brought their children to Jesus wanted Jesus to lay his hands upon them. They knew of the healing power, both physical and spiritual, which came from Jesus' touch. Jesus, in turn, rebuked his disciples for hindering the children from coming. The disciples may have wanted to shield Jesus from the nuisance of noisy children. But Jesus delighted in the children and demonstrated that God's love has ample room for everyone, including children.

Pray for the young to grow strong in faith
No one is unimportant to God. He comes to each person individually and uniquely that he might touch them with his healing love and power. Do you show kindness to the youth you encounter in your neighborhood, home, and church? And do you pray for them that they may grow in the knowledge and wisdom of Jesus Christ?

"Lord Jesus, may we never hinder our youth from coming to you to receive your blessing, instruction, and healing power. Make our youth strong in faith and in character that they may follow you zealously. And as we grow with age, may we never lose that child-like simplicity and humility which draws us into your loving presence."

Psalm 16:1-2,5-8,11

1 Preserve me, O God, for in you take refuge.
2 I say to the LORD, "You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you."
5 The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot.
6 The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; yes, I have a goodly heritage.
7 I bless the LORD who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me.
8 I keep the LORD always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.
11 You show me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy, in your right hand are pleasures for evermore.

Daily Quote from the early church fathers: To such belongs the Kingdom, by Epiphanius the Latin (late 5th century)

"Why did the disciples keep the children back? Not because of the children's wickedness but because it was not the right time. They did not want the Lord to be tired by the great crowd. To them he said, 'Let the children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.' For children are ignorant of wickedness. They do not know how to return evil for evil or how to do someone an injury. They do not know how to be lustful or to fornicate or to rob. What they hear, they believe. They love their parents with complete affection. Therefore, beloved, the Lord instructs us that what they are by the gift of nature, we should become by the fear of God, a holy way of life and love of the heavenly kingdom - for unless we are alien to all sin just like children, we cannot come to the Savior." (excerpt from INTERPRETATION OF THE GOSPELS 25)
