Reading 1
Dt 4:32-40
Moses said to the people:
“Ask now of the days of old, before your time,
ever since God created man upon the earth;
ask from one end of the sky to the other:
Did anything so great ever happen before?
Was it ever heard of?
Did a people ever hear the voice of God
speaking from the midst of fire, as you did, and live?
Or did any god venture to go and take a nation for himself
from the midst of another nation,
by testings, by signs and wonders, by war,
with his strong hand and outstretched arm, and by great terrors,
all of which the LORD, your God,
did for you in Egypt before your very eyes?
All this you were allowed to see
that you might know the LORD is God and there is no other.
Out of the heavens he let you hear his voice to discipline you;
on earth he let you see his great fire,
and you heard him speaking out of the fire.
For love of your fathers he chose their descendants
and personally led you out of Egypt by his great power,
driving out of your way nations greater and mightier than you,
so as to bring you in
and to make their land your heritage, as it is today.
This is why you must now know, and fix in your heart,
that the LORD is God in the heavens above and on earth below,
and that there is no other.
You must keep his statutes and commandments which I enjoin on you today,
that you and your children after you may prosper,
and that you may have long life on the land
which the LORD, your God, is giving you forever.”
R. (12a) I remember the deeds of the Lord.
I remember the deeds of the LORD;
yes, I remember your wonders of old.
And I meditate on your works;
your exploits I ponder.
R. I remember the deeds of the Lord.
O God, your way is holy;
what great god is there like our God?
You are the God who works wonders;
among the peoples you have made known your power.
R. I remember the deeds of the Lord.
With your strong arm you redeemed your people,
the sons of Jacob and Joseph.
You led your people like a flock
under the care of Moses and Aaron.
R. I remember the deeds of the Lord.
Jesus said to his disciples,
“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself,
take up his cross, and follow me.
For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it,
but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world
and forfeit his life?
Or what can one give in exchange for his life?
For the Son of Man will come with his angels in his Father’s glory,
and then he will repay each according to his conduct.
Amen, I say to you, there are some standing here
who will not taste death
until they see the Son of Man coming in his Kingdom.”

In today’s first reading, Moses is exhorting the people to wake up and consider what God has done and is doing for them.
In the language of today, he might say, “Open your eyes! Take a look around you!”
Wondrous deeds were done for them by God, yet even with that, many stubbornly chose to focus on their problems and not be open to the gifts and power of God.
How like that we often are. Sometimes we would rather “belly-button gaze” than truly experience our Maker and Savior. Has God spoken to us from fire? Maybe not, but God does speak to us every day, many times a day.
St. Ignatius of Loyola, whose feast day was very recent, on July 31, was inspired by God to create the daily Examen and widely share it – and this is one simple way to realize God’s hand in our daily insights and encounters.
If we do that – as well as many other practices and prayerful efforts – we will not only see the hand of God in our lives, but we will find it easier to deny ourselves, take up our crosses, and follow Jesus, has he teaches in today’s Gospel. And that is how we truly find ourselves and the lives we are intended to live.

ON THE VERGE | ||
"You led Your people like a flock." Psalm 77:21
In today's first eucharistic reading, Moses has led the Israelites through the desert for forty years. The people are now on the verge of entering into the Promised Land. They're so close to reaching their long-awaited goal that they can almost taste it. Before crossing into the land, Moses stops the people on the verge and has them recall what God has done for them. Through a long discourse that comprises the entire book of Deuteronomy, Moses pauses and reminds his people that it's more important to possess the God of the promises than it is to possess the fruits of the fulfillment of His promises. Jesus pauses before the final leg of His journey to Jerusalem and Calvary. on the verge of reaching the end of His journey, He calls a time-out and says to His disciples (and to us): "Are you really going to follow Me or not? (see Mt 16:24) Are you looking for what I can give you? Or are you looking to follow Me out of love regardless of what I give you?" (see Mt 16:25-26) Are you on the verge? Perhaps you're about to accept a new job, move into a new town, start a new school year, get married, etc. Take some time today and pause. Stop. Be still (Ps 46:11). What do you need to change in your life to be a more faithful disciple? Make the change now, while you're on the verge. Then move forward, follow Jesus, and carry your cross into the rest of your life.
Prayer: Father, whether I reach the place of promise or spend my life in dire straits, I will seek You above any temporal blessings. Keep me faithful to Your teaching and never let me be parted from You.
Promise: "You must now know, and fix in your heart, that the Lord is God...and that there is no other." —Dt 4:39
Praise: Edith Stein was Jewish, but converted to Catholicism and became the nun, St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. She acknowledged her heritage and the Nazis put her to death in Auschwitz. |

"Whoever loses his life for my sake will find it "
What is the most important investment you can make with your life? Jesus poses some probing questions to challenge our assumptions about what is most profitable and worthwhile. In every decision of life we are making ourselves a certain kind of person. The kind of person we are, our character, determines to a large extent the kind of future we will face and live. It is possible that some can gain all the things they set their heart on, only to wake up suddenly and discover that they missed the most important things of all. Of what value are material things if they don't help you gain what truly lasts in eternity. Neither money nor possessions can buy heaven, mend a broken heart, or cheer a lonely person.
The great exchange - my life for His Life
Jesus asks the question: What will a person give in exchange for his or her life? Everything we have is an out-right gift from God. We owe him everything, including our very lives. It's possible to give God our money, but not ourselves, or to give him lip-service, but not our hearts. A true disciple gladly gives up all that he or she has in exchange for an unending life of joy and happiness with God. God gives without measure. The joy he offers no sadness or loss can diminish.
True freedom and gain
The cross of Christ leads to victory and freedom from sin, despair, and death. What is the cross which Jesus Christ commands me to take up each day? When my will crosses with his will, then his will must be done. Are you ready to lose all for Jesus Christ in order to gain all with Jesus Christ?
"Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding, and all my will, all that I have and possess. You have given them to me; to you, O Lord, I restore them; all things are yours, dispose of them according to your will. Give me your love and your grace, for this is enough for me." (Prayer of Ignatius of Loyola, 1491-1556)
Psalm 77:11-15,20
11 I will call to mind the deeds of the LORD; yes, I will remember your wonders of old.
12 I will meditate on all your works, and muse on your mighty deeds.
13 Your way, O God, is holy. What god is great like our God?
14 You are the God who works wonders, who has manifested your might among the peoples.
15 You did with your arm redeem your people, the sons of Jacob and Joseph. [Selah]
20 You led thy people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.
Daily Quote from the early church fathers: Walk as Christ has walked, by Caesarius of Arles (470-543 AD)
"When the Lord tells us in the Gospel that anyone who wants to be his follower must renounce himself, the injunction seems harsh; we think he is imposing a burden on us. But an order is no burden when it is given by one who helps in carrying it out. To what place are we to follow Christ if not where he has already gone? We know that he has risen and ascended into heaven; there, then, we must follow him. There is no cause for despair - by ourselves we can do nothing, but we have Christ’s promise... one who claims to abide in Christ ought to walk as he walked. Would you follow Christ? Then be humble as he was humble. Do not scorn his lowliness if you want to reach his exaltation. Human sin made the road rough. Christ’s resurrection leveled it. By passing over it himself, he transformed the narrowest of tracks into a royal highway. Two feet are needed to run along this highway; they are humility and charity. Everyone wants to get to the top - well, the first step to take is humility. Why take strides that are too big for you - do you want to fall instead of going up? Begin with the first step, humility, and you will already be climbing." (excerpt from SERMONS 159, 1.4–6)
