Reading 1
2 Cor 1:18-22
Brothers and sisters:
As God is faithful, our word to you is not "yes" and "no."
For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was proclaimed to you by us,
Silvanus and Timothy and me,
was not "yes" and "no," but "yes" has been in him.
For however many are the promises of God, their Yes is in him;
therefore, the Amen from us also goes through him to God for glory.
But the one who gives us security with you in Christ
and who anointed us is God;
he has also put his seal upon us
and given the Spirit in our hearts as a first installment.

Responsorial Psalm
Ps 119:129, 130, 131, 132, 133, 135
R. (135a) Lord, let your face shine on me.
Wonderful are your decrees;
therefore I observe them.
R. Lord, let your face shine on me.
The revelation of your words sheds light,
gives understanding to the simple.
R. Lord, let your face shine on me.
I gasp with open mouth
in my yearning for your commands.
R. Lord, let your face shine on me.
Turn to me in pity
as you turn to those who love your name.
R. Lord, let your face shine on me.
Steady my footsteps according to your promise,
and let no iniquity rule over me.
R. Lord, let your face shine on me.
Let your countenance shine upon your servant,
and teach me your statutes.
R. Lord, let your face shine on me.

Gospel
Mt 5:13-16
Jesus said to his disciples:
"You are the salt of the earth.
But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned?
It is no longer good for anything
but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
You are the light of the world.
A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.
Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket;
it is set on a lampstand,
where it gives light to all in the house.
Just so, your light must shine before others,
that they may see your good deeds
and glorify your heavenly Father."

When I woke up this morning, the sunlight from my window was so bright it made me close my eyes again.  It was as if God was saying, “Daughter, close your eyes, and I will kiss your face.” When I opened my eyes again, the bright sunlight made me feel vulnerable, as though all my thoughts could be heard, and everything hidden could be seen.  It is so because light illuminates; light reveals our submerged fears. Light brings forth awareness; light dispels the darkness. Light becomes a witness to our journey as children of God.  We are bearers of the light.

The Gospel today speaks of our role as salt and light.  These two elements are known to enhance and influence what they encounter.  How have we, as children of God, enhanced the well-being of those around us?  How have we been a positive influence in our homes, our communities, in our world?  How have we been the light which illuminates the word of God?  Have we been the light that raised others out of darkness?  Have we spoken of the goodness of those around us so we might enhance and illuminate their presence, unique style, and flavor?

Every morning, as we are gifted another day, we are awoken with a kiss from God and sent forth to be salt and light.  It is easy to forget how the difficulties and annoyances of the day can make us lose our taste, make us dim our light, or hide our light. What are those things that make us lose our taste for life and our taste for the word of God?  What are those things that prevent us from being the one who brings light into a dark situation or the one who lights a path for others in the true spirit of leadership?  Our daily task to be salt and light has put us in a position of being a lighthouse near the sea.  If we turn off our light, those who encounter us will not be able to see our good deeds or revel in God’s glory that shines within us and around us, showing the way.

When was the last time we did a self-check on the state of our spiritual light?  Has it dimmed over time? Has our light been hidden for a while? Have we lost our energy to enhance the goodness in ourselves and in others?  Have we lost our zeal to highlight the talents, skills, and beauty of those around us who have been relegated to reside under the bushel basket of life?  I sometimes wonder if I have lost my ability to be salt as a member of the body of Christ.  I wonder if the pains, burdens, and heartbreaks of life have dimmed my ability to be light for others. So much so that even when God wakes me up in the morning with the task of being salt and light, I closed my eyes and hid in the darkness of my eyelids.  As I long to be salt and light for those around me, I simply ask for God’s mercy and the grace to always start my day with a kiss from God.

My friends, we have been called to be a positive influence on those around us.  We have been called to be enhancing agents of the goodness in the world, which seems hidden sometimes.  We have been called to be a force for positive change, witness, and light which illuminates the word of God. So, let us set ourselves on spiritual lampstands and shine brightly for the glory of God. It is our role as Church.

WATCHING THE HIGH LIGHTS

“A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” —Matthew 5:14

Once we commit our lives to Jesus and let our light shine publicly, there’s no turning back. Our lives can no longer be hidden (Mt 5:14) once we step out in faith as witnesses for Jesus on the job, in the neighborhood, in the public arena, etc. When we come into the light to let the world know that we live in Jesus, the Truth (Jn 3:21; 14:6), people are now watching us to see whether we will falter or stay faithful to Jesus. If we let our light shine before men, and then turn away from following Jesus and turn back to a worldly lifestyle, we are “unfit” to give glory to the kingdom of God (Lk 9:62).

The public credibility of the kingdom of God is at stake, and we are on display. We are vulnerable. We have put ourselves in a position where we desperately need the Holy Spirit day by day, moment by moment, to keep us “set aflame and burning bright” (Jn 5:35). Satan will tempt us to take a “breather” by stepping out of the hot lights into the darkness (see Jn 3:19); however, stepping away from Jesus is the devil’s trap. We must continually come to Jesus (Mt 11:28) and never move away from Him.

“Fix your eyes on Jesus” (Heb 3:1), “the Light of the World” (Jn 8:12). “Walk in light, as He is in the light” (1 Jn 1:7).

Prayer:  Father, let the light of Your face shine on me (Ps 119:135) that I may shine before men so they may see my good works, and give praise to You (Mt 5:16).

Promise:  “It is He Who anointed us and has sealed us, thereby depositing the first payment, the Spirit, in our hearts.” —2 Cor 1:21-22

Praise:  Clarence has brought the light of Christ to prisoners for over thirty years.

Jesus used ordinary images, such as salt and light, to convey extraordinary truths that transform our minds, hearts, and lives. What does salt and light have to teach us about God and the transforming power of his kingdom? Salt was a valuable commodity in the ancient world. People traded with it, like we trade with valuable goods, such as gold and stock. Salt also served a very useful purpose, especially in warmer climates before the invention of electricity and refrigeration. Salt not only gave rich flavor to food, it also preserved food from going bad and being spoiled.

God's power at work within us purifies and enriches our lives
Jesus used the image of salt to describe the transforming effect of God's work in our lives - and how the Holy Spirit wants to work in and through us to bring the power and blessing of God's kingdom to others. As salt purifies, preserves, and produces rich flavor for our daily food, we, too, as disciples of Jesus, are "salt" for the world of human society. The Lord wants to work in and through us to purify, preserve, and spread the rich flavor of God's kingdom everywhere - his "kingdom of righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit" (Romans 14:17).

Don't lose your saltiness
What did Jesus mean by the expression "if salt has lost its taste... it is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trodden under foot" (Matthew 5:13)? Salt in the ancient world was often put into ovens to intensify the heat. When the salt was burned off and no longer useful it was thrown out on the ground where it would get stepped on and swept away (Matthew 5:13).

How can we lose our "saltiness" - the power of God's rich grace and strength at work in us? If we allow the world (which is opposed to God's truth and moral goodness), and sinful habits, and Satan's lies and deception to corrupt our minds and hearts, then we will lose the rich flavor and strength of God which preserves us from moral and spiritual corruption. The Lord wants us to preserve and enrich our "saltiness" - through Godly living and the rejection of sin - not only for our own sake but also for the sake of others who will be impacted by our witness and behavior.

Paul the Apostle reminds us that we are called to be "the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing, to one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life" (2 Corinthians 2:15-16 ). Do you allow the fragrance of Christ's love, truth, and holiness to permeate every area of your life, your thoughts, words, actions, and relationships?

Let the light of Christ shine brightly in and through you for all to see
Jesus used the image of light and a lamp to further his illustration of God's transforming work in and through us. Lamps in the ancient world served a vital function, much like they do today. They enable people to see and work in the dark and to avoid stumbling. The Jews also understood "light" as symbol or expression of the inner beauty, truth, and goodness of God. In his light we see light ( Psalm 36:9). His word is a lamp that guides our steps (Psalm 119:105). God's grace not only dispels the darkness in our lives, it also fills us with the light of Christ's truth, wisdom, joy, and peace.

Jesus used the image of a lamp to describe how his disciples are to live in the light of his truth and love. Just as natural light illuminates the darkness and enables one to see cleary, so the light of Christ shines in the hearts of believers and enables us to see the heavenly reality of God's kingdom (Ephesians 5:13-14). Our mission is to be light-bearers of Jesus Christ so that others may see the truth of the Gospel and be freed from the blindness of sin and deception.

There is great freedom and joy for those who live in the light of God's truth and goodness. Do you know the joy and freedom of living in God's light?

Lord Jesus, you guide me by the light of your saving truth. Fill my heart and mind with your light and truth and free me from the blindness of sin and deception that I may see your ways clearly and understand your will for my life. May I radiate your light and truth to others in word and deed

Psalm 98:1-6

1 O sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things! His right hand and his holy arm have gotten him victory.
2 The LORD has made known his victory, he has revealed his vindication in the sight of the nations.
3 He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God.
4 Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises!
5 Sing praises to the LORD with the lyre, with the lyre and the sound of melody!
6 With trumpets and the sound of the horn make a joyful noise before the King, the LORD!

Daily Quote from the Early Church Fathers: The Light of Truth, by Chromatius (died 406 AD)

The Lord has already called his disciples the "salt of the earth" because they seasoned with divine wisdom the hearts of the human race which had been made tasteless by the devil. Now he also calls them the "light of the world." For, illumined by his very own self who is the true and eternal light, they too become light within the darkness. For since he himself is the sun of righteousness, he rightly also calls his disciples "light of the world." Through them, as if through shining rays, he poured the light of his knowledge on the entire world. For by showing the light of truth, the Lord's disciples made the darkness of error flee from people's hearts. (excerpt from TRACTATE ON MATTHEW 19.1.1-2)

[Note: Chromatius was an early Christian scholar and bishop of Aquileia, Italy. He was a close friend of John Chrysostom and Jerome. He died in 406 AD. Jerome described him as a "most learned and most holy man."]
