Reading 1

1 Cor 15:1-8

I am reminding you, brothers and sisters,

of the Gospel I preached to you,

which you indeed received and in which you also stand.

Through it you are also being saved,

if you hold fast to the word I preached to you,

unless you believed in vain.

For I handed on to you as of first importance what I also received:

that Christ died for our sins

in accordance with the Scriptures;

that he was buried;

that he was raised on the third day

in accordance with the Scriptures;

that he appeared to Cephas, then to the Twelve.

After that, he appeared to more

than five hundred brothers and sisters at once,

most of whom are still living,

though some have fallen asleep.

After that he appeared to James,

then to all the Apostles.

Last of all, as to one born abnormally,

he appeared to me.

Responsorial Psalm

Ps 19:2-3, 4-5

R. (5) Their message goes out through all the earth.

or:

R. Alleluia.

The heavens declare the glory of God;

and the firmament proclaims his handiwork.

Day pours out the word to day;

and night to night imparts knowledge.

R. Their message goes out through all the earth.

or:

R. Alleluia.

Not a word nor a discourse

whose voice is not heard;

Through all the earth their voice resounds,

and to the ends of the world, their message.

R. Their message goes out through all the earth.

or:

R. Alleluia.

Gospel

Jn 14:6-14

Jesus said to Thomas, “I am the way and the truth and the life.

No one comes to the Father except through me.

If you know me, then you will also know my Father.

From now on you do know him and have seen him.”

Philip said to him,

“Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.”

Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you for so long a time

and you still do not know me, Philip?

Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.

How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?

The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own.

The Father who dwells in me is doing his works.

Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me,

or else, believe because of the works themselves.

Amen, amen, I say to you,

whoever believes in me will do the works that I do,

and will do greater ones than these,

because I am going to the Father.

And whatever you ask in my name, I will do,

so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

If you ask anything of me in my name, I will do it.”

As I reflect on today’s gospel and the Feast of Sts. Philip and James, I realize I really don’t know very much about St. Philip.  I have decent knowledge of St. James  as I had children at St. James/Seton School in Omaha for about fifteen years!  If you read my reflections, you know I have a love for the saints.  So what about St. Philip?  St. Philip was one of the twelve apostles. He was called along with Andrew and Peter.  He was close to John the Baptist.  He was especially known for his cheerfulness and relationships with the people, He certainly kept good company.  He was at the wedding at Cana.  John tells us that Philip asked Jesus how to feed the 5,000.  Needless to say, he was very close to Jesus.  Jesus remarks “Philip, have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me?”

That brings us to the lesson of the day.  Jesus says:

I am the way and the truth and the life.
No one comes to the Father except through me.
If you know me, then you will also know my Father.
From now on you do know him and have seen him.”

What does this mean?  I truly believe that this is Jesus inviting all to follow him.  If we know Jesus and follow him, we will be in favor with the Father.  Here’s the important thing…EVERYBODY has this opportunity to know Jesus!  And since we know how forgiving our Father is, we can also presume that if we don’t figure that out right away, likely we will receive some grace as we learn how to follow Jesus.  Even his closest friends question HIS statement.  Let’s learn from this interaction between Jesus and his friends and discern the best way to friend Jesus and allow him to serve as a model as we live our lives.

“Only let a little Divine Love into their hearts, and then you may leave them to themselves.”

FATHER’S DAY

“How can you say, ‘Show us the Father?’ ” —John 14:9

Jesus became a man to reveal to us that God is not just the Supreme Being and the Creator, but also wants to be our personal, loving Father (see Mt 11:27). Most people in the world don’t believe this. Why would the awesome Creator of galaxies which stretch for billions of light-years decide to adopt us? As far-fetched as this may sound, it is absolutely true. Almighty God wants to be our Father (see Hos 11:4).

Jesus, as “the exact Representation of the Father’s being” (Heb 1:3), came to show us the Father. When we see Jesus, we see the Father (Jn 14:9). By believing in Jesus and being baptized into Him, we become new creations and are thereby capable of being God the Father’s adopted children (see 2 Cor 5:17). Jesus is the only Way by which this can happen (see Jn 14:6).

Jesus is preoccupied with showing us the Father’s love. Therefore, when Philip showed he didn’t know the Father’s love, he greatly disappointed Jesus (see Jn 14:9). Likewise, when we show our insecurity about our Father’s love, when we live in fear or anxiety, we grieve Jesus. After all this time, after all this love, Jesus laments that we still don’t know Him and the Father (Jn 14:9). Let us please Jesus by being secure in the Father’s love.

Prayer:  Father, may I be so secure in Your love that I will not be manipulated or pressured into sin or compromise with the world.

Promise:  “Next He was seen by James; then by all the apostles. Last of all He was seen by me.” —1 Cor 15:7-8

Praise:  Sts. Philip & James continually instructed others in the “new life” in Christ (Acts 5:20).

Do you know the love that surpasses all, that is stronger than death itself (Song of Songs 8:6)? In Jesus' last supper discourse he speaks of the love he has for his disciples and of his Father's love. He prepares his disciples for his imminent departure to return to his Father by exhorting them to prove their love for him through their loyalty and obedience to his word. He promises them the abiding instruction and consolation of the Holy Spirit.

Saint Augustine says the Lord loves each of us as if there were only one of us to love. God's love for each of us is as real and tangible as the love of a mother for her child and the love of a lover who gives all for his beloved. God made us in love for love - to know him personally and to grow in the knowledge of his great love for us and to love him in return.

God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit
How can we know and be assured of the love of God? The Holy Spirit helps us to grow in the knowledge of God and his great love. The Spirit enables us to experience the love of God and to be assured of the Lord's abiding presence with us (see Romans 5:5 and 8:35-39). The Holy Spirit also opens our ears to hear and understand the word of God. Do you listen attentively to God's word and believe it? Ask the Holy Spirit to inflame your heart with the love of God and his word.

Lord Jesus, in love you created me and you drew me to yourself. May I never lose sight of you nor forget your steadfast love and faithfulness. And may I daily dwell upon your word and give you praise in the sanctuary of my heart, You who are my All.

Psalm 115:1-4,15-16

1 Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!
2 Why should the nations say, "Where is their God?"
3 Our God is in the heavens; he does whatever he pleases.
4 Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men's hands.
15 May you be blessed by the LORD, who made heaven and earth!
16 The heavens are the LORD's heavens, but the earth he has given to the sons of men.

Daily Quote from the Early Church Fathers: God is pleased to dwell in us, by Augustine of Hippo, 354-430 A.D.

"God is not too grand to come, he is not too fussy or shy, he is not too proud - on the contrary he is pleased to come if you do not displease him. Listen to the promise he makes. Listen to him indeed promising with pleasure, not threatening in displeasure, "We shall come to him," he says, "I and the Father." To the one he had earlier called his friend, the one who obeys his precepts, the keeper of his commandment, the lover of God, the lover of his neighbor, he says, "We shall come to him and make our abode with him." (excerpt from Sermon 23,6)
