제1독서
요한 1서 4,7-16
7 사랑하는 여러분, 서로 사랑합시다.
사랑은 하느님에게서 오는 것이기 때문입니다.
사랑하는 이는 모두 하느님에게서 태어났으며 하느님을 압니다.
8 사랑하지 않는 사람은 하느님을 알지 못합니다.
하느님은 사랑이시기 때문입니다.
9 하느님의 사랑은 우리에게 이렇게 나타났습니다.
곧 하느님께서 당신의 외아드님을 세상에 보내시어
우리가 그분을 통하여 살게 해 주셨습니다.
10 그 사랑은 이렇습니다.
우리가 하느님을 사랑한 것이 아니라, 그분께서 우리를 사랑하시어
당신의 아드님을 우리 죄를 위한 속죄 제물로 보내 주신 것입니다.
11 사랑하는 여러분, 하느님께서 우리를 이렇게 사랑하셨으니
우리도 서로 사랑해야 합니다.
12 지금까지 하느님을 본 사람은 없습니다.
그러나 우리가 서로 사랑하면,
하느님께서 우리 안에 머무르시고
그분 사랑이 우리에게서 완성됩니다.
13 하느님께서는 우리에게 당신의 영을 나누어 주셨습니다.
우리는 이 사실로 우리가 그분 안에 머무르고
그분께서 우리 안에 머무르신다는 것을 압니다.
14 그리고 우리는 아버지께서 아드님을
세상의 구원자로 보내신 것을 보았고 또 증언합니다.
15 누구든지 예수님께서 하느님의 아드님이심을 고백하면,
하느님께서 그 사람 안에 머무르시고 그 사람도 하느님 안에 머무릅니다.
16 하느님께서 우리에게 베푸시는 사랑을
우리는 알게 되었고 또 믿게 되었습니다.
하느님은 사랑이십니다.
사랑 안에 머무르는 사람은 하느님 안에 머무르고
하느님께서도 그 사람 안에 머무르십니다.
예레미야서 26,1-9
1 유다 임금 요시야의 아들 여호야킴이 다스리기 시작할 무렵에, 주님께서 이런 말씀을 내리셨다.
2 주님께서 이렇게 말씀하신다. “주님의 집 뜰에 서서, 주님의 집에 예배하러 오는 유다의 모든 성읍 주민들에게, 내가 너더러 그들에게 전하라고 명령한 모든 말을 한마디도 빼놓지 말고 전하여라.
3 그들이 그 말을 듣고서 저마다 제 악한 길에서 돌아설지도 모른다. 그러면 나도 그들의 악행 때문에 그들에게 내리려는 재앙을 거두겠다.
4 너는 그들에게 이렇게 말하여라. ‘주님께서 이렇게 말씀하신다. ′너희가 내 말을 듣지 않고, 내가 너희 앞에 세워 둔 내 법대로 걷지 않는다면, 5 또 내가 너희에게 잇달아 보낸 나의 종 예언자들의 말을 듣지 않는다면, ─ 사실 너희는 듣지 않았다. ─ 6 나는 이 집을 실로처럼 만들어 버리고, 이 도성을 세상의 모든 민족들에게 저주의 대상이 되게 하겠다.′’”
7 사제들과 예언자들과 온 백성은 주님의 집에서 예레미야가 이 말을 하는 것을 들었다.
8 그리고 예레미야가 주님께서 온 백성에게 전하라고 하신 말씀을 모두 마쳤을 때, 사제들과 예언자들과 온 백성이 그를 붙잡아 말하였다.
“너는 반드시 죽어야 한다. 9 어찌하여 네가 주님의 이름으로, 이 집이 실로처럼 되고, 이 도성이 아무도 살 수 없는 폐허가 되리라고 예언하느냐?” 그러면서 온 백성이 주님의 집에 있는 예레미야에게 몰려들었다.

요한 11.19-27
그때에 19 많은 유다인이 마르타와 마리아를
그 오빠 일 때문에 위로하러 와 있었다.
20 마르타는 예수님께서 오신다는 말을 듣고 그분을 맞으러 나가고,
마리아는 그냥 집에 앉아 있었다.
21 마르타가 예수님께 말하였다.
“주님, 주님께서 여기에 계셨더라면 제 오빠가 죽지 않았을 것입니다.
22 그러나 하느님께서는 주님께서 청하시는 것은
무엇이나 들어주신다는 것을 저는 지금도 알고 있습니다.”
23 예수님께서 마르타에게,
“네 오빠는 다시 살아날 것이다.” 하시니,
24 마르타가 “마지막 날 부활 때에
오빠도 다시 살아나리라는 것을 알고 있습니다.” 하였다.
25 그러자 예수님께서 그에게 이르셨다.
“나는 부활이요 생명이다. 나를 믿는 사람은 죽더라도 살고,
26 또 살아서 나를 믿는 모든 사람은 영원히 죽지 않을 것이다.
너는 이것을 믿느냐?”
27 마르타가 대답하였다.
“예, 주님! 저는 주님께서 이 세상에 오시기로 되어 있는 메시아시며
하느님의 아드님이심을 믿습니다.”
마태오. 13,54-58
그 때에 54 예수님께서 고향에 가시어, 회당에서 사람들을 가르치셨다. 그러자 그들은 놀라서 이렇게 말하였다. “저 사람이 어디서 저런 지혜와 기적의 힘을 얻었을까? 55 저 사람은 목수의 아들이 아닌가? 그의 어머니는 마리아라고 하지 않나? 그리고 그의 형제들은 야고보, 요셉, 시몬, 유다가 아닌가? 56 그의 누이들도 모두 우리와 함께 살고 있지 않는가? 그런데 저 사람이 어디서 저 모든 것을 얻었지?” 57 그러면서 그들은 그분을 못마땅하게 여겼다.
그러자 예수님께서 그들에게 이르셨다. “예언자는 어디에서나 존경받지만, 고향과 집안에서만은 존경받지 못한다.” 58 그리고 그들이 믿지 않으므로 그곳에서는 기적을 많이 일으키지 않으셨다.

In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim,
son of Josiah, king of Judah,
this message came from the LORD:
Thus says the LORD:
Stand in the court of the house of the LORD
and speak to the people of all the cities of Judah
who come to worship in the house of the LORD;
whatever I command you, tell them, and omit nothing.
Perhaps they will listen and turn back,
each from his evil way,
so that I may repent of the evil I have planned to inflict upon them
for their evil deeds.
Say to them: Thus says the LORD:
If you disobey me,
not living according to the law I placed before you
and not listening to the words of my servants the prophets,
whom I send you constantly though you do not obey them,
I will treat this house like Shiloh,
and make this the city to which all the nations of the earth
shall refer when cursing another.
Now the priests, the prophets, and all the people
heard Jeremiah speak these words in the house of the LORD.
When Jeremiah finished speaking
all that the LORD bade him speak to all the people,
the priests and prophets laid hold of him, crying,
"You must be put to death!
Why do you prophesy in the name of the LORD:
'This house shall be like Shiloh,' and
'This city shall be desolate and deserted'?"
And all the people gathered about Jeremiah in the house of the LORD.

Jesus came to his native place and taught the people in their synagogue.

"Where did this man get such wisdom and mighty deeds?
Is he not the carpenter's son?
Is not his mother named Mary
and his brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas?
Are not his sisters all with us?
Where did this man get all this?"
And they took offense at him.
But Jesus said to them,
"A prophet is not without honor except in his native place
and in his own house."
And he did not work many mighty deeds there
because of their lack of faith.

Today is the feast of St. Martha. A while back I wrote about Martha and Mary and indicated I was more of a Mary, and when I was married I wasn’t a very good housewife. But since my mother has been disabled by a stroke and I care for her, I’ve had to be more Martha like.
I’m at my mother’s every other day, getting her up and dressed, cooking, cleaning up the kitchen after dinner, getting her a snack, doing all the house stuff I’m not really very good with. My sister and I had been trading off nights to take care of mother, but my sister is an essential worker and still going to work. My school has been closed, so I could quarantine. So to limit mother’s exposure, I’m going to mother and nowhere else, and my sister is not going to mother. So that’s another Mary/Martha switch. I’m the one cooking and cleaning. I’m the one serving and taking care. My sister is going to the store, which is great, since again I can’t risk the exposure. Maybe the real Martha is my nephew who lives with mother and is her primary caregiver. He hasn’t left the house since the virus. I am really very nervous about school opening again. We have a better view now of how to be protective, but I’m still very worried about exposing mother. So I can relate to Martha. She’s doing all the necessary stuff, serving, making sure everyone is fed, but she feels like she’s missing out on some good stuff. Mary gets to sit and enjoy the guests while Martha makes sure the guests are provided for.
When Lazarus dies, Martha and Mary are both very upset of course. A death in the family is always a hard thing. Martha knows Jesus could have healed him, if he had been there. But it’s too late now. Lazarus is dead. The funeral is over. He’s in the tomb – four days. When Jesus does get there, he tells Martha that Lazarus will rise again. She’s heard all the platitudes. We all have. He’s in a better place. Now the suffering is over. We’ll be together again in heaven. And it’s not that they’re not true, but it’s not much comfort for missing the person in your life now. I heard them all when my husband died, and to tell you the truth it didn’t comfort me. But Martha says to Jesus, “I know he will rise, in the resurrection on the last day.” She has faith, but she still misses her brother now. But Jesus says, “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and anyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world.” And in today’s Gospel we don’t even get to the part where her actually dead brother, actually in the tomb for four days, walks out of the tomb, alive again. We end today with Martha’s profession of faith. I can’t really say we aren’t getting the good stuff, even though the ending of that story is pretty amazing, because the ending we get today is her recognition, and faith, and trust. And the care and service she gives her guest is repaid, and her faith is justified.

THE ROADSTOP
“ ‘Do you believe this?’ ‘Yes, Lord,’ she replied. ‘I have come to believe that You are the Messiah, the Son of God: He Who is to come into the world.’ ” —John 11:26-27
St. Martha went out to meet Jesus on the road near her home. At this place on the road, Jesus challenged and graced Martha to believe that He is the Resurrection and the Life (Jn 11:25-26). Martha responded by making what is possibly one of the greatest acts of faith ever (Jn 11:27). Thus, this place on the road became a place of faith.
Jesus stopped at this spot (Jn 11:30), and soon Mary, Martha’s sister, and many of her friends came to meet Jesus. They all began to weep, and Jesus likewise wept (Jn 11:33, 35). Why was Jesus weeping? He knew that He would raise Lazarus from the dead. So why would He mourn Lazarus’ death? He may have been weeping because of the people’s lack of faith. Jesus wept over Jerusalem for this reason on another occasion (Lk 19:41ff). Jesus may have been weeping because Martha’s place of faith had so quickly changed into a place lacking faith.
Are there any places of faith in your life where the faith is disappearing? Look at your street, neighborhood, home, and workplace. Are these places of faith? Don’t make Jesus cry. Live and profess your faith publicly, freely, and with perseverance.
Prayer: Father, increase my faith (Lk 17:5).
Promise: “Whoever believes in Me, though he should die, will come to life; and whoever is alive and believes in Me will never die.” —Jn 11:26
Praise: “Jesus loved Martha” (Jn 11:5). St. Martha evolved into an exemplary disciple of the Lord. We have much to learn from her energetic piety.

What do you treasure above all else and how do you keep it secure? In a peasant community the best safe was often the earth. The man in the parable "went in his joy" to sell everything he had (Matthew 13:44). Why? Because he found a hidden treasure worth possessing above everything else he had. He did not, however, have enough to buy the treasure. Fortunately, he only needed enough money to buy the field. In a similar fashion, God offers his kingdom as incomparable treasure at a price we can afford! We can't pay the full price for the rich and abundant life which God offers us - but when we willingly exchange our life for the life which God offers, we receive a treasure beyond compare.
Searching for the greatest treasure of all
The pearl of great price also tells us a similar lesson (Matthew 13:45). Pearls in the ancient world came to represent the supremely valuable. Why would a merchant sell everything for a single pearl of peerless value? No doubt because he was attracted to what he thought was the greatest treasure he could possess for himself. On another occasion Jesus told his disciples, "do not throw your pearls before swine" (Matthew 7:6). Beautiful unblemished pearls were intended to enhance the beauty and value of those who wore them. Do you recognize and value the hidden treasure of God's kingdom and the peerless pearl which the Lord Jesus offers to all who believe in him?
Discovering heavenly treasure
Discovering God's kingdom is like stumbling across a hidden treasure or finding the one pearl of great price. When we discover the kingdom of God we receive the greatest possible treasure - the Lord himself. Selling all that we have to obtain this incomparable treasure could mean many things - our friends, possessions, job, our "style of life", what we do with our free time. Treasure has a special connection to the heart, the place of desire and longing, the place of will and focus. The thing we most set our heart on is our highest treasure.
In this parable what does the treasure of the kingdom of heaven refer to? It certainly refers to the kingdom of God in all its aspects (a kingdom of righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit - Romans 14:17). But in a special way, the Lord himself is the treasure we seek. "If the Almighty is your gold and your precious silver, then you will delight yourself in the Almighty" (Job 22:22-23). Is the Lord the treasure and delight of your heart?
Lord Jesus, reveal to me the true riches of your kingdom. Help me to set my heart on you alone as the treasure beyond compare with any other. Free my heart of any inordinate desires or attachment to other things that I may freely give to you all that I have in joy and gratitude for all that you have given to me. May I always find joy and delight in your presence.

"Now among the words of all kinds that profess to announce truth, and among those who report them, he seeks pearls. Think of the prophets as, so to speak, the pearls that receive the dew of heaven and become pregnant with the word of truth from heaven. They are goodly pearls that, according to the phrase here set forth, the merchant seeks. And the chief of the pearls, on the finding of which the rest are found with it, is the very costly pearl, the Christ of God, the Word that is superior to the precious letters and thoughts in the law and the prophets. When one finds this pearl all the rest are easily released. Suppose, then, that one is not a disciple of Christ. He possesses no pearls at all, much less the very costly pearl, as distinguished from those that are cloudy or darkened." (excerpt from COMMENTARY ON MATTHEW 18.8)
