그 무렵 15 바오로를 안내하던 이들은 그를 아테네까지 인도하고 나서,
자기에게 되도록 빨리 오라고 실라스와 티모테오에게 전하라는
그의 지시를 받고 돌아왔다.
22 바오로는 아레오파고스 가운데에 서서 말하였다.
“아테네 시민 여러분,
내가 보기에 여러분은 모든 면에서 대단한 종교심을 가지고 있습니다.
23 내가 돌아다니며 여러분의 예배소들을 살펴보다가,
‘알지 못하는 신에게’라고 새겨진 제단도 보았습니다.
여러분이 알지도 못하고 숭배하는 그 대상을
내가 여러분에게 선포하려고 합니다.
24 세상과 그 안에 있는 모든 것을 만드신 하느님은 하늘과 땅의 주님으로서,
사람의 손으로 지은 신전에는 살지 않으십니다.
25 또 무엇이 부족하기라도 한 것처럼 사람들의 손으로 섬김을 받지도 않으십니다.
하느님은 오히려 모든 이에게 생명과 숨과 모든 것을 주시는 분이십니다.
26 그분께서는 또 한 사람에게서 온 인류를 만드시어 온 땅 위에 살게 하시고,
일정한 절기와 거주지의 경계를 정하셨습니다.
27 이는 사람들이 하느님을 찾게 하려는 것입니다.
더듬거리다가 그분을 찾아낼 수도 있습니다.
사실 그분께서는 우리 각자에게서 멀리 떨어져 계시지 않습니다.
28 여러분의 시인 가운데 몇 사람이 ‘우리도 그분의 자녀다.’ 하고 말하였듯이,
우리는 그분 안에서 살고 움직이며 존재합니다.
29 이처럼 우리는 하느님의 자녀이므로,
인간의 예술과 상상으로 빚어 만든 금상이나 은상이나 석상을
신과 같다고 여겨서는 안 됩니다.
30 하느님께서 무지의 시대에는 그냥 보아 넘겨 주셨지만,
이제는 어디에 있든 모두 회개해야 한다고 사람들에게 명령하십니다.
31 그분께서 당신이 정하신 한 사람을 통하여
세상을 의롭게 심판하실 날을 지정하셨기 때문입니다.
그리고 그분을 죽은 이들 가운데에서 다시 살리시어
그것을 모든 사람에게 증명해 주셨습니다.”
32 죽은 이들의 부활에 관하여 듣고서, 어떤 이들은 비웃고
어떤 이들은 “그 점에 관해서는 다음에 다시 듣겠소.” 하고 말하였다.
33 이렇게 하여 바오로는 그들이 모인 곳에서 나왔다.
34 그때에 몇몇 사람이 바오로 편에 가담하여 믿게 되었다.
그들 가운데에는 아레오파고스 의회 의원인 디오니시오가 있고,
다마리스라는 여자와 그 밖에 다른 사람들도 있었다.

13 그러나 그분 곧 진리의 영께서 오시면 너희를 모든 진리 안으로 이끌어 주실 것이다.
그분께서는 스스로 이야기하지 않으시고 들으시는 것만 이야기하시며,
또 앞으로 올 일들을 너희에게 알려 주실 것이다.
14 그분께서 나를 영광스럽게 하실 것이다.
나에게서 받아 너희에게 알려 주실 것이기 때문이다.
15 아버지께서 가지고 계신 것은 모두 나의 것이다.

After Paul’s escorts had taken him to Athens,
they came away with instructions for Silas and Timothy
to join him as soon as possible.
Then Paul stood up at the Areopagus and said:
“You Athenians, I see that in every respect
you are very religious.
For as I walked around looking carefully at your shrines,
I even discovered an altar inscribed, ‘To an Unknown God.’
What therefore you unknowingly worship, I proclaim to you.
The God who made the world and all that is in it,
the Lord of heaven and earth,
does not dwell in sanctuaries made by human hands,
nor is he served by human hands because he needs anything.
Rather it is he who gives to everyone life and breath and everything.
He made from one the whole human race
to dwell on the entire surface of the earth,
and he fixed the ordered seasons and the boundaries of their regions,
so that people might seek God,
even perhaps grope for him and find him,
though indeed he is not far from any one of us.
For ‘In him we live and move and have our being,’
as even some of your poets have said,
‘For we too are his offspring.’
Since therefore we are the offspring of God,
we ought not to think that the divinity is like an image
fashioned from gold, silver, or stone by human art and imagination.
God has overlooked the times of ignorance,
but now he demands that all people everywhere repent
because he has established a day on which he will ‘judge the world
with justice’ through a man he has appointed,
and he has provided confirmation for all
by raising him from the dead.”
When they heard about resurrection of the dead,
some began to scoff, but others said,
“We should like to hear you on this some other time.”
And so Paul left them.
But some did join him, and became believers.
Among them were Dionysius,
a member of the Court of the Areopagus,
a woman named Damaris, and others with them.
After this he left Athens and went to Corinth.

When my mom was in her 90’s, I stopped giving her birthday and Christmas presents because she needed nothing. Instead I contributed to a homeless kitchen in her honor, knowing that she was happiest in giving to others. She never asked, let alone demanded, anything from her children so we tried to repay her by following her example. Our reward was her joy.
Thinking of Mother helps me relate to the image of God that St. Paul paints in today’s reading from the Acts of the Apostles. “Nor is he served by human hands because he needs anything. Rather it is he who gives to everyone life and breath and everything.”
Since God needs nothing from us, why bother to worship and serve him? Why not just lead a life centered on our own pleasures?
Answer: because prayer and service meet OUR needs, not God’s.
We worship and pray because we need God’s inspiration, consolation and guidance in coping with our daily problems. Often, we are rewarded with insights or simply the courage to endure. If we don’t pray and worship, it wouldn’t bother God but it would create a void in our lives.
Similarly, God doesn’t need us to give him anything but failing to give would hurt us because as St. Francis tells us, “it is in giving that we receive.” In other words, giving is its own reward because it makes us happy.
Do you know any happy people who are selfish or narcissistic? Do self-centered people ever receive the love they so desperately crave? They may coerce others into meeting specific demands but at the cost of anger or resentment.
I remember a colleague whose mother had rejected a gift as insufficient and demanded something grander. The daughter complied but it’s hard to believe that the new gift made the mother genuinely happy. Mom must have known that the gift of love she sought is voluntary.
on the other hand, the givers who never worry about thanks are rewarded with love such as my mother received from us because she never asked it. I think God has hard wired his creatures to experience joy when they are generous. As the medical missionary Albert Schweitzer said, “the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve.”
I like to think of God as a loving parent who invites us to worship and give in order to fulfill our needs, not his, since he has none. Worshiping and giving are also the recipe for a great and happy life.

love in spirit and in truth
"When He comes, however, being the Spirit of truth He will guide you to all truth." —John 16:13
Life in Christ is a life of love, for Jesus is Love (see 1 Jn 4:8, 16). Love requires freedom. We cannot force people to love us. Freedom requires knowledge. Without some knowledge, we cannot freely decide to love. Therefore, knowledge of the truth is very important because truth is an absolute prerequisite for love. The Lord "wants all men to be saved and come to know the truth" (1 Tm 2:4).
The fruit of the Holy Spirit is love (Gal 5:22) because the Spirit gives us freedom, which requires the Spirit to guide us to all truth (Jn 16:13). The Holy Spirit will open us to all the truth we need for the freedom to love the Lord with all our hearts, to love our neighbors as ourselves, to love even our enemies, and to actually live in love (see Jn 15:9). The Holy Spirit, by being the Spirit of truth (Jn 16:13), produces the fruit of love in our lives.
The Lord says: "My people perish for want of knowledge!" (Hos 4:6) It is not that we are saved by knowledge but that knowledge of the truth makes it possible to have faith in and love for the Lord. This is what saves us. Consequently, we need the Holy Spirit of truth and love to be as active as possible in our lives. Come, Holy Spirit!
Prayer: Father, show me the relationship between truth, freedom, and love.
Promise: "He has set the day on which He is going to 'judge the world with justice' through a Man He has appointed — one Whom He has endorsed in the sight of all by raising Him from the dead." —Acts 17:31
Praise: An orphan, St. Bernardine was raised by a godly aunt. He became a Franciscan and was ordained a priest. He preached the loving mercy of God. Bernardine devised a symbol, IHS, the first three letters of Jesus name in Greek, in Gothic letters, on a blazing sun, to promote devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus.

The Holy Spirit will guide you into all the truth
Do you live in the shadow of doubt and uncertainty or in the light of God's truth and revelation? Jesus proclaims that he is the Truth, the Way, and the Life (John 14:6). Truth is not something we create nor is it our discovery. It is the gift of God who is the possessor and giver of all truth. Jesus tells his disciples that it is the role of the Holy Spirit to reveal what is true, right, and good. How can this be? Many skeptics of truth don't want to believe in an absolute, objective, and unchanging Truth. If truth is objective then it must be asserted to as trustworthy and right and be submitted to as authoritative and binding.
Some fear the truth because they think it will inhibit their freedom to think, judge, and act as they wish. Jesus told his disciples that the truth will set you free (John 8:32). The truth liberates us from whatever is false, misleading, doubtful, or deceptive. In God there is no lie or falsehood since he is utterly true, good, and just. Since he is the author and source of all that is true and good, then the closer we draw near to him in order to listen to his word and understand his mind and will for us, the more we will grow in the knowledge of God and of his great love, wisdom, and plan for us.
The Spirit of truth
Jesus told his disciples that he would send them the Spirit of truth who will guide you into all the truth ..and declare to you the things that are to come (John 16:13). Jesus knew that his disciples could not fully understand on their own everything he had taught and revealed to them while he was physically present with them. He knew that they would need the ongoing guidance and help of the Holy Spirit after he returned to his Father in heaven. That is why he assured them that the Holy Spirit would take what he had spoken to them and guide them into a fuller understanding of God's wisdom, power, and glory he wished to share with them so they could live in the joy and freedom of his love and truth.
Augustine of Hippo (354-430 AD) explains the progressive work of the Spirit in guiding the disciples of Jesus in all the truth:
"Accordingly, when he says, 'He will teach you all truth' or 'will guide you into all truth,' I do not think the fulfillment is possible in anyone's mind in this present life. For who is there, while living in this corruptible and soul-oppressing body (Wisdom 9:15), that can know all truth when even the apostle says, 'We know in part'? But it is effected by the Holy Spirit, of whom we have now received the promise (2 Corinthians 1:21), that we shall attain also to the actual fullness of knowledge that the same apostle references when he says, 'But then face to face' and 'Now I know in part, but then shall I know even as also I am known' (1 Corinthians 13:12). He is not talking about something he knows fully in this life but about something that would still be in the future when he would attain that perfection. This is what the Lord promised us through the love of the Spirit, when he said, 'He will teach you all truth' or 'will guide you unto all truth.'" (TRACTATES on THE GOSPEL OF JOHN 96.4)
on the day of Pentecost after the Holy Spirit was poured out upon the first disciples of Jesus, the apostles boldly began to carry out the mission Jesus had entrusted to them - to proclaim the truth of the Gospel and to make disciples [followers of Jesus] of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you, and behold, I am with you always, to the close of the age (Matthew 28:19-20).
The Holy Spirit is our Teacher and Helper
Today, through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we, too, proclaim the same ancient faith which the apostles taught - that Jesus died, and was buried, and rose again on the third day, and will come again to judge, raise the dead, and give everlasting life (from the Apostles Creed). We not only share the same faith which was given to the apostles, we also have the same Holy Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead. The Lord Jesus gives each of us his Holy Spirit as our divine Teacher and Helper that we may grow in the knowledge, wisdom, and strength of God. Do you listen attentively to God's word and allow his Holy Spirit to give you understanding of God's truth and plan for your life?
"Lord Jesus, fill me with your Holy Spirit and guide me in your way of life, truth, and goodness. Free me from ignorance of your truth, and from deception and moral blindness caused by sinful pride and the refusal to believe and obey your word of truth. May I love you with all of my heart, mind, and strength, and seek to please you in all things."
