오늘의 복음 : http://info.catholic.or.kr/missa/default.asp
제1독서
사도행전. 4,32-37

Reading 1
The community of believers was of one heart and mind,
and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own,
but they had everything in common.
With great power the Apostles bore witness
to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus,
and great favor was accorded them all.
There was no needy person among them,
for those who owned property or houses would sell them,
bring the proceeds of the sale,
and put them at the feet of the Apostles,
and they were distributed to each according to need.
Thus Joseph, also named by the Apostles Barnabas
(which is translated “son of encouragement”),
a Levite, a Cypriot by birth,
sold a piece of property that he owned,
then brought the money and put it at the feet of the Apostles
Responsorial Psalm

not to be moved.
Your throne stands firm from of old;
from everlasting you are, O LORD.

Gospel
Jesus said to Nicodemus:
“‘You must be born from above.’
The wind blows where it wills, and you can hear the sound it makes,
but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes;
so it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
Nicodemus answered and said to him,
‘How can this happen?”
Jesus answered and said to him,
“You are the teacher of Israel and you do not understand this?
Amen, amen, I say to you,
we speak of what we know and we testify to what we have seen,
but you people do not accept our testimony.
If I tell you about earthly things and you do not believe,
how will you believe if I tell you about heavenly things?
No one has gone up to heaven
except the one who has come down from heaven, the Son of Man.
And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert,
so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.”

«You must be born again from above»
Fr. Xavier SOBREVÍA i Vidal
(Castelldefels, Spain)
Today, Jesus talks about the difficulty of foreseeing and knowing the action of the Holy Spirit: in fact, «it blows where it pleases» (Jn 3:8). He ties it in with the testimony He is also giving and the need to be born from above. «You must be born again from above» (Jn 3:7), clearly says the Lord; a new life is necessary to have access to eternal life. It is not enough just to get by to reach the Kingdom of Heaven; a new life, regenerated by the Spirit's action, is needed. Our professional, family, sporting, cultural, ludic and, most than all, pious life, must be transformed by our Christian feeling and by God's action. Everything must be transversely impregnated by his Spirit. Nothing, but nothing at all, should make us stay outside the renewal God's Spirit, offers us.
A transformation where Jesus Christ is the catalyst. He, who previously had to suffer the Crucifixion and then resurrect, is who will send us God's Spirit. He who has come from above. He who has shown his power and his goodness, through his many miracles. He who always makes his Father's will. He who has suffered to the last drop of blood for us. Thanks to the Spirit He will send us, we «shall be able to ascend to the Kingdom of Heaven; by the Spirit we obtain his filial adoption; by the Spirit we are allowed to call God our “Father”, to participate of Christ's Grace and to receive the right to share the eternal glory» (Saint Basil the Great).
Let us give the Spirit's action our warmest welcome, let us listen to him and let us apply his inspirations

Nicodemus has come to Jesus, obviously, seeking something new. He is a teacher of Israel whose laws and traditions are ancient. He seems to be attempting to fit Jesus’ new with the Jewish old. He wants to fuse the religious two into one and Jesus will con-fuse him in these verses from today’s Gospel reading.
Being born from above is new. To be born of the Spirit is new and then Jesus hits Nicodemus with the old. Jesus bends Nicodemus back to his old reliable book of Numbers, chapter 21: 6-9, picturing the Bronze Serpent which saved the Israelites from death. Jesus is presenting Himself as the new revelation of Gods eternal salvific love. only later do we hear that Nicodemus bought into the new eventually.
We often say, upon meeting someone, “What’s new?” We love learning the new, especially about ourselves, if it doesn’t hurt to much. We have a variety of expressions, upon hearing the new, which indicate our difficulty in accepting the new. We say, “You got to be kidding. Are you pulling my leg? Get out of here with that! Nonsense! As my father often would say, “You’re talking through your hat!” Believing the new is an old problem.
This past Sunday’s Gospel presented Thomas being confronted with the news and his reaction was quite understandable. He needed proof so as not to be spoofed. He got it first hand, as it were. Thomas could not believe the new not even from the words of his old friends.
The whole Easter message is about the invitation to struggle with what we have been told in the Scriptures by those who have seen. There are a number of invitations by Jesus personally to persons whom we will visit and with whom, we are invited to pray. The history of the Church’s growth, especially in the Acts of the Apostles, is the history of believing, not what we have seen with our own eyes, but of our relying on hearing what those before us had seen.
Believing is much harder for us, as we rely so much on the immediate data from computers and electronic social media. Just stop and count all the various devices you have by which you can obtain the security of information. It is amazing how quickly we can find things out and rest assured in it. I have my friend Alexa right here and she is most willing to fill me in on the old and the new. Believing for us is not an easy habit or practice.
We have the Nicodemus drive to know the old and the new. What Jesus tells Nicodemus is that there is a new way of knowing, called Spirit, not flesh. The flesh will never be satisfied, always the juvenile demanding “why!” We are given the gifts of mind and heart. Both can never be satisfied! The new is kind of a trick becoming old as soon as it is digested. The heart longs, not so much for satisfaction, but for completion which it can never have. To be born of the Spirit is to be born into the land and life of longing. Jesus is offering this way of being born and living to his hearer here and to all whom He is meeting these Easter Days, including to ourselves. Alexa can not figure Jesus out either, at least not yet.

make easter special
"With power the apostles bore witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus." —Acts 4:33
The Holy Spirit has told the Church to make the Easter season extra special by celebrating some of God's greatest works during Easter. For example, the first hours of Easter are glorified by the Baptisms, Confirmations, and First Communions of hundreds of thousands of catechumens throughout the world. We kick off the fifty-day Easter season with the Easter octave. We often have additional Confirmations and First Communions throughout Easter. We celebrate May as the month of Mary with rosaries and May crownings. We conclude the Easter season with the Pentecost novena and the earthshaking feast of Pentecost.
The Holy Spirit may also be telling you to join with the Church and make Easter extra special. Maybe you should be like Barnabas (Acts 4:36-37), sell your farm, give the proceeds to the Church, and be a missionary. Maybe you should get a new job or a new way of serving the Lord on the job. This may be the time the Lord is calling you and your spouse to conceive a child. Easter is prime time for deciding to be a priest, a religious, or a single person consecrated to the Lord. What better time to change your lifestyle or suffer persecution! Let's not be rash, but let's not be afraid to make big decisions which proclaim loud and clear that Jesus is risen from the dead.
Prayer: Father, teach me how to witness with power for the risen Jesus (see Acts 4:33).
Promise: "Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that all who believe may have eternal life in Him." —Jn 3:14-15
Praise: St. Anselm received the title "Father of Scholasticism" for his attempt to analyze and illuminate the truths of faith through the use of reason. He pleaded for mercy on the king who exiled him.

"You must be born anew"
Do you know the healing power and victory of the cross of Jesus Christ? Jesus spoke to Nicodemus of a "new birth in the Spirit" which would come about through the victory he would accomplish through his death and rising. The Hebrew word for "spirit" means both "wind" and "breath". Jesus explained to Nicodemus: You can hear, feel, and see the effects of the wind, but you do not know where it comes from. In like manner, you can see the effects of the Holy Spirit in the lives of those whom the Spirit touches with the peace, joy, and signs of God's power and love at work in them.
The "lifting up" of the Son of Man
Jesus explained to Nicodemus that the "Son of Man" must be "lifted up" to bring the power and authority of God's kingdom to bear on the earth. The title, "Son of Man," came from the prophet Daniel who describes a vision he received of the Anointed Messiah King who was sent from heaven to rule over the earth (Daniel 7:13-14). Traditionally when kings began to reign they were literally "lifted up" and enthroned above the people. Jesus explains to Nicodemus that he will be recognized as the Messiah King when he is "lifted up" on the cross at Calvary. Jesus died for his claim to be the Messiah King sent by the Father to redeem, heal, and reconcile his people with God.
Jesus points to a key prophetic sign which Moses performed in the wilderness right after the people of Israel were afflicted with poisonous serpents. Scripture tells us that many people died in the wilderness because of their sin of rebellion towards Moses and God. Through Moses' intervention, God showed mercy to the people and instructed Moses to "make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and every one who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live"(Numbers 21:8). This miraculous sign was meant to foreshadow and point to the saving work which Jesus would perform to bring healing and salvation to the world.
Cyril of Alexandria (376-444 AD), an early church father, explains the spiritual meaning of the bronze serpent and how it points to the saving work of Jesus Christ:
"This story is a type of the whole mystery of the incarnation. For the serpent signifies bitter and deadly sin, which was devouring the whole race on the earth... biting the Soul of man and infusing it with the venom of wickedness. And there is no way that we could have escaped being conquered by it, except by the relief that comes only from heaven. The Word of God then was made in the likeness of sinful flesh, 'that he might condemn sin in the flesh' [Romans 8:3], as it is written. In this way, he becomes the Giver of unending salvation to those who comprehend the divine doctrines and gaze on him with steadfast faith. But the serpent, being fixed upon a lofty base, signifies that Christ was clearly manifested by his passion on the cross, so that none could fail to see him." (COMMENTARY on THE GOSPEL OF JOHN 2.1)
Our new birth in the Holy Spirit
The bronze serpent which Moses lifted up in the wilderness points to the cross of Christ which defeats sin and death and obtains everlasting life for those who believe in Jesus Christ. The result of Jesus "being lifted up on the cross" and his rising from the dead, and his exaltation and ascension to the Father's right hand in heaven, is our "new birth in the Spirit" and adoption as sons and daughters of God. God not only frees us from our sins and pardons us, he also fills us with his own divine life through the gift and working of his Spirit who dwells within us.
The Holy Spirit gives us spiritual power and gifts, especially the seven-fold gifts of wisdom and understanding, right judgment and courage, knowledge and reverence for God and his ways, and a holy fear in God's presence (see Isaiah 11), to enable us to live in his strength as sons and daughters of God. Do you thirst for the new life which God offers you through the transforming power of his Holy Spirit?
"Lord Jesus Christ, your death brought life for us. Fill me with your Holy Spirit that I may walk in freedom and joy in the knowledge of your great victory over sin and death."
Psalm 93:1-5
1 The LORD reigns; he is robed in majesty; the LORD is robed, he is girded with strength. Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved;
2 your throne is established from of old; you are from everlasting.
3 The floods have lifted up, O LORD, the floods have lifted up their voice, the floods lift up their roaring.
4 Mightier than the thunders of many waters, mightier than the waves of the sea, the LORD on high is mighty!
5 Your decrees are very sure; holiness befits your house, O LORD, for evermore.
A Daily Quote from early church fathers: He descended so that we might ascend, by Augustine of Hippo, 354-430 A.D.
"Spiritual birth happens when human beings, being earthly, become heavenly. And this can only happen when they are made members of me. So that he may ascend who descended, since no one ascends who did not descend. Therefore everyone who needs to be changed and raised must meet together in a union with Christ so that the Christ who descended may ascend, considering his body (that is to say, his church)6 as nothing other than himself."
