제1독서

창세기. 1,1─2,2<또는 1,1.26-31ㄱ>

1 한처음에 하느님께서 하늘과 땅을 창조하셨다.
2 땅은 아직 꼴을 갖추지 못하고 비어 있었는데,
어둠이 심연을 덮고 하느님의 영이 그 물 위를 감돌고 있었다.
3 하느님께서 말씀하시기를 “빛이 생겨라.” 하시자 빛이 생겼다.
4 하느님께서 보시니 그 빛이 좋았다. 하느님께서는 빛과 어둠을 가르시어,
5 빛을 낮이라 부르시고 어둠을 밤이라 부르셨다.
저녁이 되고 아침이 되니 첫날이 지났다.
6 하느님께서 말씀하셨다.
“물 한가운데에 궁창이 생겨, 물과 물 사이를 갈라놓아라.”
7 하느님께서 이렇게 궁창을 만들어
궁창 아래에 있는 물과 궁창 위에 있는 물을 가르시자, 그대로 되었다.
8 하느님께서는 궁창을 하늘이라 부르셨다.
저녁이 되고 아침이 되니 이튿날이 지났다.
9 하느님께서 말씀하시기를
“하늘 아래에 있는 물은 한곳으로 모여, 뭍이 드러나라.” 하시자,
그대로 되었다.
10 하느님께서는 뭍을 땅이라, 물이 모인 곳을 바다라 부르셨다.
하느님께서 보시니 좋았다.
11 하느님께서 말씀하시기를 “땅은 푸른 싹을 돋게 하여라.
씨를 맺는 풀과 씨 있는 과일나무를 제 종류대로 땅 위에 돋게 하여라.” 하시자,

그대로 되었다.
12 땅은 푸른 싹을 돋아나게 하였다.
씨를 맺는 풀과 씨 있는 과일나무를 제 종류대로 돋아나게 하였다.
하느님께서 보시니 좋았다.
13 저녁이 되고 아침이 되니 사흗날이 지났다.
14 하느님께서 말씀하시기를 “하늘의 궁창에 빛물체들이 생겨,
낮과 밤을 가르고, 표징과 절기, 날과 해를 나타내어라.
15 그리고 하늘의 궁창에서 땅을 비추는 빛물체들이 되어라.” 하시자,
그대로 되었다.
16 하느님께서는 큰 빛물체 두 개를 만드시어,
그 가운데에서 큰 빛물체는 낮을 다스리고 작은 빛물체는 밤을 다스리게 하셨다.
그리고 별들도 만드셨다.
17 하느님께서 이것들을 하늘 궁창에 두시어 땅을 비추게 하시고,
18 낮과 밤을 다스리며 빛과 어둠을 가르게 하셨다.
하느님께서 보시니 좋았다.
19 저녁이 되고 아침이 되니 나흗날이 지났다.
20 하느님께서 말씀하셨다.
“물에는 생물이 우글거리고, 새들은 땅 위 하늘 궁창 아래를 날아다녀라.”
21 이렇게 하느님께서는 큰 용들과 물에서 우글거리며
움직이는 온갖 생물들을 제 종류대로,
또 날아다니는 온갖 새들을 제 종류대로 창조하셨다.
하느님께서 보시니 좋았다.
22 하느님께서 이들에게 복을 내리며 말씀하셨다.
“번식하고 번성하여 바닷물을 가득 채워라. 새들도 땅 위에서 번성하여라.”
23 저녁이 되고 아침이 되니 닷샛날이 지났다.
24 하느님께서 말씀하시기를 “땅은 생물을 제 종류대로,
곧 집짐승과 기어 다니는 것과 들짐승을 제 종류대로 내어라.” 하시자,
그대로 되었다.
25 하느님께서는 이렇게 들짐승을 제 종류대로, 집짐승을 제 종류대로,
땅바닥을 기어 다니는 온갖 것을 제 종류대로 만드셨다.
하느님께서 보시니 좋았다.


26 하느님께서 말씀하셨다. “우리와 비슷하게 우리 모습으로 사람을 만들자.
그래서 그가 바다의 물고기와 하늘의 새와 집짐승과
온갖 들짐승과 땅을 기어 다니는 온갖 것을 다스리게 하자.”
27 하느님께서는 이렇게 당신의 모습으로 사람을 창조하셨다.
하느님의 모습으로 사람을 창조하시되 남자와 여자로 그들을 창조하셨다.
28 하느님께서 그들에게 복을 내리며 말씀하셨다.
“자식을 많이 낳고 번성하여 땅을 가득 채우고 지배하여라.
그리고 바다의 물고기와 하늘의 새와 땅을 기어 다니는 온갖 생물을 다스려라.”
29 하느님께서 말씀하시기를 “이제 내가 온 땅 위에서
씨를 맺는 모든 풀과 씨 있는 모든 과일나무를 너희에게 준다.
이것이 너희의 양식이 될 것이다.
30 땅의 모든 짐승과 하늘의 모든 새와 땅을 기어 다니는 모든 생물에게는
온갖 푸른 풀을 양식으로 준다.” 하시자, 그대로 되었다.
31 하느님께서 보시니 손수 만드신 모든 것이 참 좋았다.
저녁이 되고 아침이 되니 엿샛날이 지났다.
2,1 이렇게 하늘과 땅과 그 안의 모든 것이 이루어졌다.
2 하느님께서는 하시던 일을 이렛날에 다 이루셨다.
그분께서는 하시던 일을 모두 마치시고 이렛날에 쉬셨다.


제2독서 

창세기. 22,1-18<또는 22,1-2.9ㄱ.10-13.15-18>
그 무렵 1 하느님께서 아브라함을 시험해 보시려고
“아브라함아!” 하고 부르시자, 그가 “예, 여기 있습니다.” 하고 대답하였다.
2 그분께서 말씀하셨다.
“너의 아들, 네가 사랑하는 외아들 이사악을 데리고 모리야 땅으로 가거라.
그곳, 내가 너에게 일러 주는 산에서 그를 나에게 번제물로 바쳐라.”
3 아브라함은 아침 일찍 일어나 나귀에 안장을 얹고
두 하인과 아들 이사악을 데리고서는, 번제물을 사를 장작을 팬 뒤
하느님께서 자기에게 말씀하신 곳으로 길을 떠났다.
4 사흘째 되는 날에 아브라함이 눈을 들자, 멀리 있는 그곳을 볼 수 있었다.
5 아브라함이 하인들에게 말하였다.
“너희는 나귀와 함께 여기에 머물러 있어라.
나와 이 아이는 저리로 가서 경배하고 너희에게 돌아오겠다.”
6 그러고 나서 아브라함은 번제물을 사를 장작을 가져다 아들 이사악에게 지우고,
자기는 손에 불과 칼을 들었다. 그렇게 둘은 함께 걸어갔다.
7 이사악이 아버지 아브라함에게 “아버지!” 하고 부르자,
그가 “얘야, 왜 그러느냐?” 하고 대답하였다.
이사악이 “불과 장작은 여기 있는데,
번제물로 바칠 양은 어디 있습니까?” 하고 묻자,
8 아브라함이 “얘야, 번제물로 바칠 양은
하느님께서 손수 마련하실 거란다.” 하고 대답하였다.
둘은 계속 함께 걸어갔다.
9 그들이 하느님께서 아브라함에게 말씀하신 곳에 다다르자,
아브라함은 그곳에 제단을 쌓고 장작을 얹어 놓았다.
그러고 나서 아들 이사악을 묶어 제단 장작 위에 올려놓았다.
10 아브라함이 손을 뻗쳐 칼을 잡고 자기 아들을 죽이려 하였다.
11 그때, 주님의 천사가 하늘에서
“아브라함아, 아브라함아!” 하고 그를 불렀다.
그가 “예, 여기 있습니다.” 하고 대답하자
12 천사가 말하였다. “그 아이에게 손대지 마라. 그에게 아무 해도 입히지 마라.
네가 너의 아들, 너의 외아들까지 나를 위하여 아끼지 않았으니,
네가 하느님을 경외하는 줄을 이제 내가 알았다.”
13 아브라함이 눈을 들어 보니, 덤불에 뿔이 걸린 숫양 한 마리가 있었다.
아브라함은 가서 그 숫양을 끌어와 아들 대신 번제물로 바쳤다.
14 아브라함은 그곳의 이름을 ‘야훼 이레’라 하였다.
그래서 오늘도 사람들은 ‘주님의 산에서 마련된다.’고들 한다.
15 주님의 천사가 하늘에서 두 번째로 아브라함을 불러 16 말하였다.
“나는 나 자신을 걸고 맹세한다. 주님의 말씀이다.
네가 이 일을 하였으니, 곧 너의 아들, 너의 외아들까지 아끼지 않았으니,
17 나는 너에게 한껏 복을 내리고, 네 후손이 하늘의 별처럼,
바닷가의 모래처럼 한껏 번성하게 해 주겠다.
너의 후손은 원수들의 성문을 차지할 것이다.
18 네가 나에게 순종하였으니,
세상의 모든 민족들이 너의 후손을 통하여 복을 받을 것이다.”

 

제3독서

탈출기. 14,15─15,1ㄱ
그 무렵 15 주님께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다.
“너는 어찌하여 나에게 부르짖느냐?
이스라엘 자손들에게 앞으로 나아가라고 일러라.
16 너는 네 지팡이를 들고 바다 위로 손을 뻗어 바다를 가르고서는,
이스라엘 자손들이 바다 가운데로 마른땅을 걸어 들어가게 하여라.
17 나는 이집트인들의 마음을 완고하게 하여, 너희를 뒤따라 들어가게 하겠다.
그런 다음 나는 파라오와 그의 모든 군대,
그의 병거와 기병들을 쳐서 나의 영광을 드러내겠다.
18 내가 파라오와 그의 병거와 기병들을 쳐서 나의 영광을 드러내면,
이집트인들은 내가 주님임을 알게 될 것이다.”
19 이스라엘 군대 앞에 서서 나아가던 하느님의 천사가
자리를 옮겨 그들 뒤로 갔다.
구름 기둥도 그들 앞에서 자리를 옮겨 그들 뒤로 가 섰다.
20 그리하여 그것은 이집트 군대와 이스라엘 군대 사이에 자리 잡게 되었다.
그러자 그 구름이 한쪽은 어둡게 하고, 다른 쪽은 밤을 밝혀 주었다.
그래서 밤새도록 아무도 이쪽에서 저쪽으로 다가갈 수 없었다.
21 모세가 바다 위로 손을 뻗었다.
주님께서는 밤새도록 거센 샛바람으로 바닷물을 밀어내시어,
바다를 마른땅으로 만드셨다. 그리하여 바닷물이 갈라지자,
22 이스라엘 자손들이 바다 가운데로 마른땅을 걸어 들어갔다.
물은 그들 좌우에서 벽이 되어 주었다. 23 뒤이어 이집트인들이 쫓아왔다.
파라오의 모든 말과 병거와 기병들이 그들을 따라 바다 한가운데로 들어갔다.
24 새벽녘에 주님께서 불기둥과 구름 기둥에서
이집트 군대를 내려다보시고, 이집트 군대를 혼란에 빠뜨리셨다.
25 그리고 그분께서는 이집트 병거들의 바퀴를 움직이지 못하게 하시어,
병거를 몰기 어렵게 만드셨다.
그러자 이집트인들이 “이스라엘을 피해 달아나자.
주님이 그들을 위해서 이집트와 싸우신다.” 하고 말하였다.
26 주님께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다. “바다 위로 손을 뻗어,
이집트인들과 그들의 병거와 기병들 위로 물이 되돌아오게 하여라.”
27 모세가 바다 위로 손을 뻗었다. 날이 새자 물이 제자리로 되돌아왔다.
그래서 도망치던 이집트인들이 물과 맞닥뜨리게 되었다.
주님께서는 이집트인들을 바다 한가운데로 처넣으셨다.
28 물이 되돌아와서, 이스라엘 자손들을 따라 바다로 들어선
파라오의 모든 군대의 병거와 기병들을 덮쳐 버렸다.
그들 가운데 한 사람도 살아남지 못하였다.
29 그러나 이스라엘 자손들은 바다 가운데로 마른땅을 걸어갔다.
물은 그들 좌우에서 벽이 되어 주었다.
30 그날 주님께서는 이렇게 이스라엘을 이집트인들의 손에서 구해 주셨고,
이스라엘은 바닷가에 죽어 있는 이집트인들을 보게 되었다.
31 이렇게 이스라엘은 주님께서 이집트인들에게 행사하신 큰 권능을 보았다.
그리하여 백성은 주님을 경외하고, 주님과 그분의 종 모세를 믿게 되었다.
15,1 그때 모세와 이스라엘 자손들이 주님께 이 노래를 불렀다.
 

제4독서

이사야서. 54,5-14
5 너를 만드신 분이 너의 남편 그 이름 만군의 주님이시다.
이스라엘의 거룩하신 분이 너의 구원자 그분께서는 온 땅의 하느님이라 불리신다.
6 정녕 주님께서는 너를 소박맞아 마음 아파하는 아내인 양
퇴박맞은 젊은 시절의 아내인 양 다시 부르신다. 너의 하느님께서 말씀하신다.
7 “내가 잠시 너를 버렸지만 크나큰 자비로 너를 다시 거두어들인다.
8 분노가 북받쳐 내 얼굴을 잠시 너에게서 감추었지만
영원한 자애로 너를 가엾이 여긴다.”
네 구원자이신 주님께서 말씀하신다.
9 “이는 나에게 노아의 때와 같다.
노아의 물이 다시는 땅에 범람하지 않으리라고 내가 맹세하였듯이
너에게 분노를 터뜨리지도 너를 꾸짖지도 않겠다고 내가 맹세한다.
10 산들이 밀려나고 언덕들이 흔들린다 하여도
나의 자애는 너에게서 밀려나지 않고 내 평화의 계약은 흔들리지 아니하리라.”
너를 가엾이 여기시는 주님께서 말씀하신다.
11 너 가련한 여인아, 광풍에 시달려도 위로받지 못한 여인아.
보라, 내가 석류석을 너의 주춧돌로 놓고 청옥으로 너의 기초를 세우리라.
12 너의 성가퀴들을 홍옥으로, 너의 대문들을 수정으로,
너의 성벽을 모두 보석으로 만들리라.
13 너의 아들들은 모두 주님의 제자가 되리라. 또 네 아들들의 평화가 넘치리라.
14 너는 의로움으로 굳건히 세워지고 압박에서 풀려나리니
네가 두려워할 일이 없으리라.
또 공포에서 풀려나리니 그것이 너에게 닥쳐오지 아니하리라.


제5독서

이사야서. 55,1-11
주님께서 이렇게 말씀하신다.
1 “자, 목마른 자들아, 모두 물가로 오너라.
돈이 없는 자들도 와서 사 먹어라. 와서 돈 없이 값 없이 술과 젖을 사라.
2 너희는 어찌하여 양식도 못 되는 것에 돈을 쓰고
배불리지도 못하는 것에 수고를 들이느냐?
들어라, 내 말을 들어라. 너희가 좋은 것을 먹고 기름진 음식을 즐기리라.
3 너희는 귀를 기울이고 나에게 오너라. 들어라. 너희가 살리라.
내가 너희와 영원한 계약을 맺으리니
이는 다윗에게 베푼 나의 변치 않는 자애이다.
4 보라, 내가 그를 민족들을 위한 증인으로,
민족들의 지배자와 명령자로 만들었다.
5 보라, 네가 알지 못하는 나라를 네가 부르고
너를 알지 못하는 나라가 너에게 달려오리니
주 너의 하느님, 이스라엘의 거룩하신 분
그분께서 너를 영화롭게 하신 까닭이다.
6 만나 뵐 수 있을 때에 주님을 찾아라.
가까이 계실 때에 그분을 불러라.
7 죄인은 제 길을, 불의한 사람은 제 생각을 버리고
주님께 돌아오너라. 그분께서 그를 가엾이 여기시리라.
우리 하느님께 돌아오너라. 그분께서는 너그러이 용서하신다.
8 내 생각은 너희 생각과 같지 않고 너희 길은 내 길과 같지 않다.
주님의 말씀이다.
9 하늘이 땅 위에 드높이 있듯이
내 길은 너희 길 위에, 내 생각은 너희 생각 위에 드높이 있다.
10 비와 눈은 하늘에서 내려와 그리로 돌아가지 않고
오히려 땅을 적시어 기름지게 하고 싹이 돋아나게 하여
씨 뿌리는 사람에게 씨앗을 주고 먹는 이에게 양식을 준다.
11 이처럼 내 입에서 나가는 나의 말도 나에게 헛되이 돌아오지 않고
반드시 내가 뜻하는 바를 이루며 내가 내린 사명을 완수하고야 만다.”


제6독서

바룩서. 3,9-15.32─4,4
9 이스라엘아! 생명의 계명을 들어라. 귀를 기울여 예지를 배워라.
10 이스라엘아! 어찌하여, 네가 어찌하여
원수들의 땅에서 살며 남의 나라에서 늙어 가느냐?
11 네가 어찌하여 죽은 자들과 함께 더럽혀지고
저승으로 가는 자들과 함께 헤아려지게 되었느냐?
12 네가 지혜의 샘을 저버린 탓이다.
13 네가 하느님의 길을 걸었더라면 너는 영원히 평화롭게 살았으리라.
14 예지가 어디에 있고 힘이 어디에 있으며 지식이 어디에 있는지를 배워라.
그러면 장수와 생명이 어디에 있고
눈을 밝혀 주는 빛과 평화가 어디에 있는지를 함께 깨달으리라.
15 누가 지혜의 자리를 찾았으며 누가 지혜의 보고에 들어갔는가?
32 모든 것을 보시는 그분만이 슬기를 아시고 당신의 지식으로 그것을 찾아내신다.
이 세상이 영원하도록 마련하신 그분께서 그곳을 네발 가진 짐승들로 채우셨다.
33 그분께서 보내시니 빛이 가고 그분께서 부르시니 빛이 떨며 복종한다.
34 별들은 때맞추어 빛을 내며 즐거워한다.
35 그분께서 별들을 부르시니 “여기 있습니다.” 하며
자기들을 만드신 분을 위하여 즐겁게 빛을 낸다.
36 이분께서 우리 하느님이시니 어느 누구도 이분께 견줄 수 없다.
37 그분께서 슬기의 길을 모두 찾아내시어
당신 종 야곱과 당신께 사랑받는 이스라엘에게 주셨다.
38 그러고 나서야 땅 위에 슬기가 나타나 사람들과 어울리게 되었다.
4,1 슬기는 하느님의 명령과 길이 남을 율법을 기록한 책이다.
슬기를 붙드는 이는 살고 그것을 버리는 자는 죽는다.
2 야곱아, 돌아서서 슬기를 붙잡고 그 슬기의 불빛을 향하여 나아가라.
3 네 영광을 남에게 넘겨주지 말고 네 특권을 다른 민족에게 넘겨주지 마라.
4 이스라엘아, 우리는 행복하구나!
하느님께서 기뻐하시는 일을 우리가 알고 있다.


제7독서

에제키엘 예언서. 36,16-17ㄱ.18-28
16 주님의 말씀이 나에게 내렸다.
17 “사람의 아들아, 이스라엘 집안이 자기 땅에 살 때,
그들은 자기들이 걸어온 길과 행실로 그 땅을 부정하게 만들었다.
18 그들이 그 땅에 쏟은 피 때문에, 그들이 그 땅을 더럽히며 섬긴 우상들 때문에,
나는 그들에게 내 화를 퍼부었다.
19 그래서 그들을 민족들 사이로 쫓아 버리고 여러 나라로 흩어 버렸다.
그들의 길과 행실에 따라 그들을 심판하였다.
20 사람들이 그들을 두고,
‘이자들은 주님의 백성인데 그분 땅에서 나와야만 했지.’ 하고 말하였다.
이렇게 그들은 가는 곳마다 나의 거룩한 이름을 더럽혔다.
21 그래서 나는 이스라엘 집안이 민족들 사이로 흩어져 가
거기에서 더럽힌 나의 이름을 걱정하게 되었다.
22 그러므로 이스라엘 집안에게 말하여라.
‘주 하느님이 이렇게 말한다.
이스라엘 집안아, 너희 때문에 내가 이 일을 하는 것이 아니다.
너희가 민족들 사이로 흩어져 가 거기에서 더럽힌 나의 거룩한 이름 때문이다.
23 나는 민족들 사이에서 더럽혀진,
곧 너희가 그들 사이에서 더럽힌 내 큰 이름의 거룩함을 드러내겠다.
그들이 보는 앞에서 너희에게 나의 거룩함을 드러내면,
그제야 그들은 내가 주님임을 알게 될 것이다. 주 하느님의 말이다.
24 나는 너희를 민족들에게서 데려오고 모든 나라에서 모아다가,
너희 땅으로 데리고 들어가겠다.
25 그리고 너희에게 정결한 물을 뿌려, 너희를 정결하게 하겠다.
너희의 모든 부정과 모든 우상에게서 너희를 정결하게 하겠다.
26 너희에게 새 마음을 주고 너희 안에 새 영을 넣어 주겠다.
너희 몸에서 돌로 된 마음을 치우고, 살로 된 마음을 넣어 주겠다.
27 나는 또 너희 안에 내 영을 넣어 주어,
너희가 나의 규정들을 따르고 나의 법규들을 준수하여 지키게 하겠다.
28 그리하여 너희는 내가 너희 조상들에게 준 땅에서 살게 될 것이다.
너희는 나의 백성이 되고 나는 너희의 하느님이 될 것이다.”


서간

로마서. 6,3-11
형제 여러분, 3 그리스도 예수님과 하나 되는 세례를 받은 우리가
모두 그분의 죽음과 하나 되는 세례를 받았다는 사실을 여러분은 모릅니까?
4 과연 우리는 그분의 죽음과 하나 되는 세례를 통하여 그분과 함께 묻혔습니다.
그리하여 그리스도께서 아버지의 영광을 통하여
죽은 이들 가운데에서 되살아나신 것처럼,
우리도 새로운 삶을 살아가게 되었습니다.
5 사실 우리가 그분처럼 죽어 그분과 결합되었다면,
부활 때에도 분명히 그리될 것입니다.
6 우리는 압니다. 우리의 옛 인간이 그분과 함께 십자가에 못 박힘으로써
죄의 지배를 받는 몸이 소멸하여,
우리가 더 이상 죄의 종노릇을 하지 않게 되었습니다.
7 죽은 사람은 죄에서 벗어나기 때문입니다.
8 그래서 우리가 그리스도와 함께 죽었으니
그분과 함께 살리라고 우리는 믿습니다.
9 우리는 그리스도께서 죽은 이들 가운데에서 되살아나시어
다시는 돌아가시지 않으리라는 것을 압니다.
죽음은 더 이상 그분 위에 군림하지 못합니다.
10 그분께서 돌아가신 것은 죄와 관련하여 단 한 번 돌아가신 것이고,
그분께서 사시는 것은 하느님을 위하여 사시는 것입니다.
11 이와 같이 여러분 자신도 죄에서는 죽었지만
그리스도 예수님 안에서 하느님을 위하여 살고 있다고 생각하십시오.


복음

마태오 28,1-10
1 안식일이 지나고 주간 첫날이 밝아 올 무렵,
마리아 막달레나와 다른 마리아가 무덤을 보러 갔다.
2 그런데 갑자기 큰 지진이 일어났다.
그리고 주님의 천사가 하늘에서 내려오더니
무덤으로 다가가 돌을 옆으로 굴리고서는 그 위에 앉는 것이었다.
3 그의 모습은 번개 같고 옷은 눈처럼 희었다.
4 무덤을 경비하던 자들은 천사를 보고 두려워 떨다가 까무러쳤다.
5 그때에 천사가 여자들에게 말하였다. “두려워하지 마라.
너희가 십자가에 못 박히신 예수님을 찾는 줄을 나는 안다.
6 그분께서는 여기에 계시지 않는다. 말씀하신 대로 그분께서는 되살아나셨다.
와서 그분께서 누워 계셨던 곳을 보아라.
7 그러니 서둘러 그분의 제자들에게 가서 이렇게 일러라.
‘그분께서는 죽은 이들 가운데에서 되살아나셨습니다.
이제 여러분보다 먼저 갈릴래아로 가실 터이니,
여러분은 그분을 거기에서 뵙게 될 것입니다.’
이것이 내가 너희에게 알리는 말이다.”
8 그 여자들은 두려워하면서도 크게 기뻐하며 서둘러 무덤을 떠나,
제자들에게 소식을 전하러 달려갔다.
9 그런데 갑자기 예수님께서 마주 오시면서

In the beginning, when God created the heavens and the earth,
the earth was a formless wasteland, and darkness covered the abyss,
while a mighty wind swept over the waters.

Then God said,
“Let there be light,” and there was light.
God saw how good the light was.
God then separated the light from the darkness.
God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.”
Thus evening came, and morning followed?the first day.

Then God said,
“Let there be a dome in the middle of the waters,
to separate one body of water from the other.”
And so it happened:
God made the dome,
and it separated the water above the dome from the water below it.
God called the dome “the sky.”

so that the dry land may appear.”

the greater one to govern the day,
and the lesser one to govern the night;
and he made the stars.
God set them in the dome of the sky,

and to separate the light from the darkness.
God saw how good it was.

Then God said,
“Let the water teem with an abundance of living creatures,
and on the earth let birds fly beneath the dome of the sky.”

God created the great sea monsters
and all kinds of swimming creatures with which the water teems,
and all kinds of winged birds.
God saw how good it was, and God blessed them, saying,
“Be fertile, multiply, and fill the water of the seas;
and let the birds multiply on the earth.”

Then God said,
“Let the earth bring forth all kinds of living creatures:
cattle, creeping things, and wild animals of all kinds.”
And so it happened:
God made all kinds of wild animals, all kinds of cattle,

“Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.

the birds of the air, and the cattle,
and over all the wild animals
and all the creatures that crawl on the ground.”
God created man in his image;

male and female he created them.
God blessed them, saying:

God also said:

with the work he had been doing,

Gn 22:1-18 or 22:1-2, 9a, 10-13, 15-18
God put Abraham to the test.
He called to him, “Abraham!”
“Here I am, “ he replied.
Then God said:
“Take your son Isaac, your only one, whom you love,
and go to the land of Moriah.
There you shall offer him up as a holocaust
on a height that I will point out to you.”
Early the next morning Abraham saddled his donkey,
took with him his son Isaac and two of his servants as well,
and with the wood that he had cut for the holocaust,
set out for the place of which God had told him.

On the third day Abraham got sight of the place from afar.
Then he said to his servants:
“Both of you stay here with the donkey,
while the boy and I go on over yonder.
We will worship and then come back to you.”
Thereupon Abraham took the wood for the holocaust
and laid it on his son Isaac’s shoulders,
while he himself carried the fire and the knife.
As the two walked on together, Isaac spoke to his father Abraham:
“Father!” Isaac said.
“Yes, son, “ he replied.
Isaac continued, “Here are the fire and the wood,
but where is the sheep for the holocaust?”
“Son,” Abraham answered,
“God himself will provide the sheep for the holocaust.”
Then the two continued going forward.

When they came to the place of which God had told him,
Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it.
Next he tied up his son Isaac,
and put him on top of the wood on the altar.
Then he reached out and took the knife to slaughter his son.
But the LORD’s messenger called to him from heaven,
“Abraham, Abraham!”
“Here I am!” he answered.
“Do not lay your hand on the boy,” said the messenger.
“Do not do the least thing to him.
I know now how devoted you are to God,
since you did not withhold from me your own beloved son.”
As Abraham looked about,
he spied a ram caught by its horns in the thicket.
So he went and took the ram
and offered it up as a holocaust in place of his son.
Abraham named the site Yahweh-yireh;
hence people now say, (On the mountain the LORD will see.”

Again the LORD’s messenger called to Abraham from heaven and said:
“I swear by myself, declares the LORD,
that because you acted as you did 
in not withholding from me your beloved son,
I will bless you abundantly
and make your descendants as countless
as the stars of the sky and the sands of the seashore;
your descendants shall take possession
of the gates of their enemies,
and in your descendants all the nations of the earth shall find blessing
all this because you obeyed my command.”

Ex 14:15-15:1
The LORD said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to me?

split the sea in two,

But I will make the Egyptians so obstinate
that they will go in after them.
Then I will receive glory through Pharaoh and all his army,
his chariots and charioteers.
The Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD,
when I receive glory through Pharaoh 
and his chariots and charioteers.”

The angel of God, who had been leading Israel’s camp,
now moved and went around behind them.
The column of cloud also, leaving the front,
took up its place behind them,
so that it came between the camp of the Egyptians
and that of Israel.
But the cloud now became dark, and thus the night passed
without the rival camps coming any closer together
all night long.
Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea,
and the LORD swept the sea
with a strong east wind throughout the night
and so turned it into dry land.
When the water was thus divided, 
the Israelites marched into the midst of the sea on dry land,
with the water like a wall to their right and to their left.

The Egyptians followed in pursuit;
all Pharaoh’s horses and chariots and charioteers went after them
right into the midst of the sea.
In the night watch just before dawn 
the LORD cast through the column of the fiery cloud
upon the Egyptian force a glance that threw it into a panic;
and he so clogged their chariot wheels
that they could hardly drive.
With that the Egyptians sounded the retreat before Israel,
because the LORD was fighting for them against the Egyptians.

Then the LORD told Moses, (Stretch out your hand over the sea,
that the water may flow back upon the Egyptians,
upon their chariots and their charioteers.”
So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, 
and at dawn the sea flowed back to its normal depth.
The Egyptians were fleeing head on toward the sea, 
when the LORD hurled them into its midst.
As the water flowed back, 
it covered the chariots and the charioteers of Pharaoh’s whole army
which had followed the Israelites into the sea.
Not a single one of them escaped.
But the Israelites had marched on dry land

through the midst of the sea,
with the water like a wall to their right and to their left.
Thus the LORD saved Israel on that day
from the power of the Egyptians.
When Israel saw the Egyptians lying dead on the seashore
and beheld the great power that the LORD
had shown against the Egyptians, 
they feared the LORD and believed in him and in his servant Moses.

Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the LORD:
I will sing to the LORD, for he is gloriously triumphant;
horse and chariot he has cast into the sea.

Epistle
Rom 6:3-11
Brothers and sisters:
Are you unaware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?

We were indeed buried with him through baptism into death,
so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead

we too might live in newness of life.

For if we have grown into union with him through a death like his, 
we shall also be united with him in the resurrection.
We know that our old self was crucified with him, 
so that our sinful body might be done away with, 
that we might no longer be in slavery to sin.
For a dead person has been absolved from sin.
If, then, we have died with Christ,
we believe that we shall also live with him.
We know that Christ, raised from the dead, dies no more;

As to his death, he died to sin once and for all;

Gospel

mt 28:1-10 

After the sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning,
Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb.
And behold, there was a great earthquake; 
for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, 
approached, rolled back the stone, and sat upon it.
His appearance was like lightning
and his clothing was white as snow.
The guards were shaken with fear of him
and became like dead men.
Then the angel said to the women in reply,
“Do not be afraid!
I know that you are seeking Jesus the crucified.
He is not here, for he has been raised just as he said.
Come and see the place where he lay.
Then go quickly and tell his disciples,
‘He has been raised from the dead, 
and he is going before you to Galilee;
there you will see him.’
Behold, I have told you.”
Then they went away quickly from the tomb, 
fearful yet overjoyed,
and ran to announce this to his disciples.
And behold, Jesus met them on their way and greeted them.

Today, we do not consider any particular Gospel, inasmuch it is a day with no liturgy. But, with Mary, the only one who stayed firm in faith and hope after the tragic death of her Son, we shall prepare ourselves, in silence and in prayer, to celebrate the feast of our liberation in Christ, that is, the fulfillment of the Gospel.

The sequential coincidence of events between our Lord’s Death and Resurrection and the annual Jewish celebration of Passover, commemoration of their liberation from slavery in Egypt, allows us to understand the feeling of liberation spread by the Cross of Jesus, new Paschal lamb whose blood preserves us from death.

Another less remarkable time coincidence, but, nevertheless, rich in meaning, refers to the weekly Jewish holiday of the "Sabbat". It is observed from sundown on Friday, when the mothers in the family turn on the lights in every Jewish home, until dusk on Saturday. This is a reminder that after the work of creation, after having created the world out of nothing, the seventh day God rested. He wished man to rest also the seventh day, as thanksgiving of the beauty of the Creator’s work, and as a sign of the covenant of love between God and Israel. In the Jewish Sabbat liturgy God is invoked as the Israel spouse. The Sabbath is the day that encourages everyone to welcome the peace of God, His "Shalom".

In this way, after the painful work of the Cross, «variation where man is forged again» according to Catherine of Siena’s own words, Jesus begins His rest at the very moment when the first lights of Sabbat are turned on: "It is finished" (Jn 19:30).

Now the work of the new creation has been completed: man, once prisoner of the oblivion of sin, becomes a new creature in Christ. A new covenant between God and mankind, that no one will ever shatter, has just been sealed. Henceforth, all infidelity may be washed in the blood and water that flow from the cross.

The letter to the Hebrews says: «there remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God» (Heb 4:9). Our faith in Christ gives us access to it. That He gives us our true rest, our deep peace, not for one day, but for life, and that it may be a total hope in God's infinite mercy, according to the invitation of Psalm 16: «my flesh also dwells secure, for you will not abandon my soul to Sheol». That with a new heart we shall prepare ourselves to celebrate in joy the wedding of the Lamb and that we let us get fully married for the love of God in Christ.

Today in fact, there is no “Gospel” to meditate upon or perhaps we should rather meditate upon the whole Gospel with capital letters (the Good News), because it all ends in what we are today recalling: Jesus surrendering to Death so that He can rise again and give us a New Life.

Today, the Church remains by our Lord's tomb, while meditating upon his Passion and Death. We shall not celebrate the Eucharist until the day will be over, until tomorrow, when it will start with the Solemn Vigil of the Resurrection. Today, is a day of silence, of affliction, of sadness, of thinking and waiting. Today, we dot not find the Holy Eucharist to be reserved in the Sacrarium. There is only the remembrance and the sign of his “love to the end”, the Holy Cross we devotedly adore.

Today, is the day to be by Mary, his mother. We have to stay by her to be able to understand a little the significance of this tomb we are watching over. She, who with loving tenderness was keeping in his motherly heart those mysteries she did not quite understood from that Son of hers, who was the Saviour of us all, is now sad and hurt: «He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him» (Jn 1:11). It is also the sadness of the other mother, the Holy Church, that suffers the rejection of so many men and women that have not sheltered Him, who was Light and Life for them.

Today, while praying together with these two mothers, Christ followers ponder and repeat the antiphon of the prayer of Laudes: «He humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name» (cf. Phil 2:8-9).

Today, the faithful Christian listens to the Ancient Homily about the Holy Saturday the Church reads in the liturgy of the Office of Readings: «There is a great silence on earth today, a great silence and stillness. The whole earth keeps silence because the King is asleep. The earth trembled and is still because God has fallen asleep in the flesh and He has raised up all who have slept ever since the world began. God has died in the flesh and hell trembles with fear».

Let us prepare to commemorate the solitude of Mary to live the brightness of Resurrection and to celebrate and proclaim —when this sad day is over— with the other mother, the Holy Church: Jesus Christ has risen, just as he said! (cf. Mt 28:6).

Today is a day like no other in the Church calendar. There are no liturgies or readings for today. We await the Easter Vigil.

on this day, we wait. Christ has died. We know he comes again. We know there will be the Resurrection. I was trying to imagine what this day was like for Mary, for the disciples and followers of Jesus. I am sure they believed in what he said. In the darkness of this time, in the sadness and grief, in that great hole of loss, I hope their faith offered a glimmer of hope and of light.

We fear death and sometimes have trouble coming to grips with our own mortality. That should serve as a touchpoint as we truly let the message and meaning of Christ’s death sink in: Jesus became fully human, yes, fully human and died for us so that we might live and that we might have everlasting life with him. That is our light and our hope.

In the darkness, on a day where our usual and comforting routine is no longer there, we can close our eyes and take a deep breath. God is here in the darkness. God is here. In this uncertain time, God, as I contemplate the mystery of death and the Resurrection to come, please give me the grace to let go and to believe that death has no power over me.

Today in the Catholic community, we have no Mass and no Holy Communion until we celebrate the Easter Vigil. It is a most peculiar day during which we identify with Jesus buried in the tomb. "Through baptism into His death we were buried with Him" (Rm 6:4).

To be buried with Christ means that our old fallen nature is "six feet under." We must keep it that way by refusing to return to our sins. If we refuse to dig up the old nature buried in the waters of Baptism, we will continue to live the risen life. Then, on the last day, we will have our bodies risen and glorified. Don't disturb your old nature's grave.

 "They laid him in a rock-hewn tomb"

Jesus not only died for our sins (1 Corinthians 15:3); he also, by the grace of God, tasted death for every one (Hebrews 2:9). It was a real death that put an end to his earthly human existence. Jesus died in mid afternoon and the Sabbath began at 6:00 pm. Since the Jewish law permitted no work on the Sabbath, the body had to be buried quickly. Someone brave enough would have to get permission from the Roman authorities to take the body and bury it. The bodies of executed criminals were usually left unburied as carrion (dead flesh) for the vultures and dogs. Jesus was spared this indignity through the gracious intervention of Joseph of Arimethea.

Who was this admirer and secret disciple of Jesus? Luke tells us that Joseph was a member of the Sanhedrin, the supreme Jewish council that condemned Jesus. We are told that he did not agree with their verdict. He was either absent from their meeting or silent when they tried Jesus. What kind of man was Joseph? Luke tells us that he was "good and righteous" and "looking for the kingdom of God". Although he did not stand up for Jesus at his trial, he nonetheless, sought to honor him in his death by giving him a proper burial. This was to fulfill what the prophet Isaiah had foretold: "He was cut off out of the land of the living ..and they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth" (Isaiah 53:8-9).

The power of God kept Jesus' body from corruption so he could rise victorious on the third day
In the Book of Revelation, the Lord Jesus speaks: "Fear not, I am the first and the last, and the living one: I died, and behold I am alive for evermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades" (Revelation 1:17-18). No tomb in the world could contain the Lord Jesus for long. His death on the cross purchased our redemption and his triumph over the grave on Easter morning defeated death. What preserved the Lord Jesus from corruption? He was kept from decay and he rose from the dead by divine power. "My flesh will dwell in hope. For you will not let your Holy one see corruption" (Psalm 16:9-10). The mystery of Christ's lying in the tomb on the sabbath reveals the great sabbath rest of God after the fulfillment of our salvation which brings peace to the whole world (Colossians 1:18-20). Is your hope in this life only, or is it well founded in the resurrection of Christ and his promise that those who believe in him will live forever?

"Lord Jesus, you died that I might live forever in your kingdom of peace and righteousness. Strengthen my faith that I may I know the power of your resurrection and live in the hope of seeing you face to face for ever."

Let him stand in opposition to me. I have set the condemned man free; I have given the dead man life; I have raised up the one who had been entombed. Who is my opponent?  'I', he says, 'am the Christ'. I am the one who destroyed death, and triumphed over the enemy, and trampled Hades under foot, and bound the strong one, and carried off man to the heights of heaven'. ‘I', he says, 'am the Christ'.

    This is the one who made the heaven and the earth, and who in the beginning created man, who was proclaimed through the law and the prophets, who became human through the virgin, who was hanged upon a tree, who was buried in the earth, who was resurrected to the heights of heaven, who sits at the right hand of the Father, who has authority to judge and to save everything, from the beginning of the world to the end of the age.
    This is the alpha and the omega, this is the beginning and the end - an indescribable beginning, and an incomprehensible end. This is the Christ. This is the king. This is Jesus. This is the general. This is the Lord. This is the one who sits at the right hand of the Father, to whom be the glory and the power for ever. Amen.
