Reading I
Kgs 2:1-4, 10-12
I am going the way of all flesh.
Take courage and be a man.
A reading from the first Book of
When the time of David’s death drew near,
he gave these instructions to his son Solomon:
“I am going the way of all flesh.
Take courage and be a man.
Keep the mandate of the Lord, your God, following his ways
and observing his statutes, commands, ordinances, and decrees
as they are written in the law of Moses,
that you may succeed in whatever you do,
wherever you turn, and the Lord may fulfill
the promise he made on my behalf when he said,
‘If your sons so conduct themselves
that they remain faithful to me with their whole heart
and with their whole soul,
you shall always have someone of your line
on the throne of Israel.’”
David rested with his ancestors and was buried in the City of David .
The length of David’s reign over Israel was forty years:
he reigned seven years in Hebron
and thirty-three years in Jerusalem .
Solomon was seated on the throne of his father David,
with his sovereignty firmly established.
Responsorial Psalm
1 Chronicles 29:10, 11ab, 11d-12a, 12bcd
R. (12b) Lord, you are exalted over all.
“Blessed may you be, O LORD,
God of Israel our father,
from eternity to eternity.”
R. Lord, you are exalted over all.
“Yours, O LORD, are grandeur and power,
majesty, splendor, and glory.”
R. Lord, you are exalted over all.
“LORD, you are exalted over all.
Yours, O Lord, is the sovereignty;
you are exalted as head over all.
Riches and honor are from you.”
R. Lord, you are exalted over all.
“In your hand are power and might;
it is yours to give grandeur and strength to all.”
R. Lord, you are exalted over all.
Gospel
Mk 6:7-13
Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two
and gave them authority over unclean spirits.
He instructed them to take nothing for the journey but a walking stick
no food, no sack, no money in their belts.
They were, however, to wear sandals but not a second tunic.
He said to them,
“Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave from there.
Whatever place does not welcome you or listen to you,
leave there and shake the dust off your feet
in testimony against them.”
So they went off and preached repentance.
The Twelve drove out many demons,
and they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.

«Jesus called the Twelve to him and began to send them out two by two (…). They set out to proclaim that this was the time to repent»
+ Fr. Josep VALL i Mundó
(Barcelona, Spain)
Today, the Gospel refers to the Apostles' first apostolic mission. Jesus Christ sends the Twelve to preach, to heal the sick and to prepare the ways of our definite salvation. This is the mission of the Church, and our mission, too. The II Vatican Council asserted, «Christian vocation is by its very nature a vocation to the apostolate. No baptized person can remain idle! Therefore, he who would not strive to achieve a human body and spiritual growth, would be as useless for the Church as he would be for himself».
Gustave Thibon used to say that our world needs a “soul's supplement” to regenerate itself. Christ's doctrine is the only medicine that can cure all illnesses of the world. The world is in crisis. But, it is not just a partial decay of moral or human values: it is a crisis of everything. And the most precise term to define it would be a “crisis of soul”.
With the grace and doctrine of Jesus we Christians find ourselves in the midst of the temporal structures of humans so that we can instill life in them and guide them towards our Creator: «That the world, through the predication of the Church, by listening, it can believe, by believing, it can wait, and by waiting, it can love» (Saint Augustine). We Christians cannot elude this world. As Bernanos wrote: «We have been thrown in the middle of the dough, in the middle of the multitude, as yeast; we shall conquer again, inch by inch, the Universe that sin snatched away from us. O Lord, we shall return it to you as we received it in the morning of the world, with all its order and all its sanctity».
The secret lies in loving the world with all our soul and in living with love the mission Jesus Christ gave the Apostles, and all of us. With words from Saint Josemaria, we can affirm «The apostolate is a love for God that is brimming with joy, with dedication to others (...). And our eagerness to spread our apostolate is the exact, adequate and necessary manifestation of our interior life». This has to be our daily testimony amidst men and throughout all ages.

This reflection will be coming soon. Until then, here is a reflection from Vivian Amu from 2018.
From David to his Son, Solomon; from Jesus to his disciples; there is a continuation of the act of missioning. It is now our turn. We are all being missioned into the world, and we are asked to take nothing with us except our faith and trust in God – this will be our walking stick – and courage – our sandals. We are to journey as we are and not cloaked with a second tunic of self-doubt and fear. We are to travel light as we go forward in service.
Quite often when we are about to travel for any reason, we usually have a mental checklist of things we need to remember to do, or things we need to remember to take along; the right clothes, the documents, money, and so on. In a way, even when we pack the bare minimum, and decide on only the essentials, we are still weighed down with the baggage of worry, fears, and our need to control every moment. We still take too much upon ourselves and lose sight of the graces we receive along the way, the opportunities to experience God’s love, and the opportunities to experience fully all the gifts God has bestowed on us. Yes, we are each a child of God, and when we walk into a room, our grace can bring a smile to the face of a hurting soul. Our goodness can bring peace to a home filled with negativity. Our light can drive out the darkness. These are not just gifts for the twelve disciples; this is our gift as well; we are being missioned out into the world to do good work – to serve for the greater glory of God – and we will not be alone. Just as the disciples where sent out two by two, we are sent to serve together. Being successful in ministry is kind of a team effort. We now live in a world that glorifies the idea of working on our own, or doing things our own way, or being independent. These are not bad ideas in and of themselves, but we are somewhat created to work together, not alone. We are members of the body of Christ, we function splendidly together. When you feel disconnected, remember, you are not traveling through this life alone. Yes, travel light, but let’s travel together.
What are those things that weigh us down as we journey through life? What are those things that get in our way of doing God’s work? Do we have the courage to go where we are sent, to move on when it is time, to take rejection, to lead and to serve when it is difficult and inconvenient, to do work for the greater glory of God? Dear friends, do we have the courage? I am still afraid to answer these questions for myself, but one thing I do know is that it seems our options open up when we travel light through life; leaving our baggage – physical or emotional – behind as we respond to the missioning into the world. Yes, brothers and sisters, let’s pick up our walking sticks, put on our sandals, and do ministry together.

A SPECTACULAR LIFE | ||
"I am going the way of all mankind." 1 Kings 2:2
In today's Mass readings, King David dies. A quick summary of David's life could read like this:
We may live a mundane life, which is not at all spectacular. Yet we are baptized children of God. We are thus greater than David (see Mt 11:11), and as God's beloved children, we are more than conquerors in Jesus (Rm 8:37). The Spirit of God rushed upon David (1 Sm 16:13), but David did not have the fullness of the Spirit, nor did he have the Sacraments, a saving knowledge of Jesus, or the great blessings of the Church. May we repent as David repented (Ps 51:3ff), dance as David danced (2 Sm 6:14), and be men and women after God's own heart who will fulfill His every wish.
Prayer: "A clean heart create for me, O God; and a steadfast spirit renew within me" (Ps 51:12).
Promise: "[The apostles] expelled many demons, anointed the sick with oil, and worked many cures." —Mk 6:13
Praise: St. Paul Miki with his companions were spectacular in their witness and their martyrdom. St. Paul witnessed, "The only reason for my being killed is that I have taught the doctrine of Christ." |

Jesus gave them authority over sickness and unclean spirits
What kind of authority and power does the Lord want you to exercise on his behalf? Jesus gave his apostles both the power and the authority to speak and to act in his name. He commanded them to do the works which he did - to heal the sick, to cast out evil spirits, and to speak the word of God - the good news of the Gospel which they received from Jesus. When Jesus spoke of power and authority he did something unheard of. He wedded power and authority with self-sacrificing love and humility. The "world" and the "flesh" (our own sinful inclination) seek power for selfish gain. Jesus teaches us to use it for the good of our neighbor.
The Lord Jesus wants to work in and through each of us for his glory
Why does Jesus tell the apostles to "travel light" with little or no provision? "Poverty of spirit" frees us from greed and preoccupation with our possessions and makes ample room for God's provision. The Lord wants his disciples to be dependent on him and not on themselves. He wills to work in and through each of us for his glory. Are you ready to use the spiritual authority and power which God wishes you to exercise on his behalf? The Lord entrusts us with his gifts and talents. Are you eager to place yourself at his service, to do whatever he bids you, and to witness his truth and saving power to whomever he sends you?
"Lord Jesus, make me a channel of your healing power and merciful love that others may find abundant life and freedom in you. Free me from all other attachments that I may joyfully pursue the treasure of your heavenly kingdom. May I witness the joy of the Gospel both in word and deed."
Psalm 48:2-11
2 Beautiful in elevation, is the joy of all the earth, Mount Zion, in the far north, the city of the great King.
3 Within her citadels God has shown himself a sure defense.
4 For behold, the kings assembled, they came on together.
5 As soon as they saw it, they were astounded, they were in panic, they took to flight;
6 trembling took hold of them there, anguish as of a woman in travail.
7 By the east wind you did shatter the ships of Tarshish.
8 As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the LORD of hosts, in the city of our God, which God establishes for ever. [Selah]
9 We have thought on your steadfast love, O God, in the midst of your temple.
10 As your name, O God, so your praise reaches to the ends of the earth. Your right hand is filled with victory;
11 let Mount Zion be glad! Let the daughters of Judah rejoice because of your judgments!
Daily Quote from the early church fathers: Jesus gives them power to heal and cast out evil spirits, by Cyril of Alexandria (376-444 AD)
"The grace bestowed upon the holy apostles is worthy of all admiration. But the bountifulness of the Giver surpasses all praise and admiration. He gives them, as I said, his own glory. They receive authority over the evil spirits. They reduce to nothing the pride of the devil that was so highly exalted and arrogant. They render ineffectual the demon’s wickedness. By the might and efficacy of the Holy Spirit, burning them as if they were on fire, they make the devil come forth with groans and weeping from those whom he had possessed...
"He glorified his disciples, therefore, by giving them authority and power over the evil spirits and over sicknesses. Did he honor them without reason and make them famous without any logical cause? How can this be true? It was necessary, most necessary, that they should be able to work miracles, having been publicly appointed ministers of sacred proclamations. By means of their works, they then could convince men that they were the ministers of God and mediators of all beneath the heaven. The apostles then could invite them all to reconciliation and justification by faith and point out the way of salvation and of life that is this justification."
