Reading 1
2 Sm 7:18-19, 24-29
After Nathan had spoken to King David,
the king went in and sat before the LORD and said,
“Who am I, Lord GOD, and who are the members of my house,
that you have brought me to this point?
Yet even this you see as too little, Lord GOD;
you have also spoken of the house of your servant
for a long time to come:
this too you have shown to man, Lord GOD!

“You have established for yourself your people Israel as yours forever,
and you, LORD, have become their God.
And now, LORD God, confirm for all time the prophecy you have made
concerning your servant and his house,
and do as you have promised.
Your name will be forever great, when men say,
‘The LORD of hosts is God of Israel,’
and the house of your servant David stands firm before you.
It is you, LORD of hosts, God of Israel,
who said in a revelation to your servant,
‘I will build a house for you.’
Therefore your servant now finds the courage to make this prayer to you.
And now, Lord GOD, you are God and your words are truth;
you have made this generous promise to your servant.
Do, then, bless the house of your servant
that it may be before you forever;
for you, Lord GOD, have promised,
and by your blessing the house of your servant
shall be blessed forever.”

Responsorial Psalm
132:1-2, 3-5, 11, 12, 13-14
R.  (Lk 1:32b)  The Lord God will give him the throne of David, his father.
LORD, remember David
and all his anxious care;
How he swore an oath to the LORD,
vowed to the Mighty one of Jacob.
R. The Lord God will give him the throne of David, his father.
“I will not enter the house where I live,
nor lie on the couch where I sleep;
I will give my eyes no sleep,
my eyelids no rest,

Till I find a home for the LORD,
a dwelling for the Mighty one of Jacob.”
R. The Lord God will give him the throne of David, his father.
The LORD swore an oath to David
a firm promise from which he will not withdraw:
“Your own offspring
I will set upon your throne.”
R. The Lord God will give him the throne of David, his father.
“If your sons keep my covenant,
and the decrees which I shall teach them,
Their sons, too, forever
shall sit upon your throne.”
R. The Lord God will give him the throne of David, his father.
For the LORD has chosen Zion ,
he prefers her for his dwelling:
“ Zion is my resting place forever;
in her I will dwell, for I prefer her.”
R. The Lord God will give him the throne of David, his father.

Gospel
Mk 4:21-25
Jesus said to his disciples,
“Is a lamp brought in to be placed under a bushel basket
or under a bed,
and not to be placed on a lampstand?
For there is nothing hidden except to be made visible;
nothing is secret except to come to light.
Anyone who has ears to hear ought to hear.”
He also told them, “Take care what you hear.
The measure with which you measure will be measured out to you,
and still more will be given to you.
To the one who has, more will be given;
from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.”

 «When the light comes, is it to be put under a tub or a bed?»

Fr. Àngel CALDAS i Bosch
(Salt, Girona, Spain)

Today, Jesus explains to us the secret of his Kingdom. He is even somewhat ironical when telling us that the internal “energy” the Word of God has —his own Word—, that communicative force that spreads all over the world, is just like a light, and that this light cannot go «under a tub or a bed?» (Mk 4:21)

Can you imagine someone so stupid as to place a lit candle under the bed? We Christians with the lights off or with the lights on, but with a ban on lighting us up! This is what happens when we do not place all our love and knowledge at the service of our Faith. How anti-natural of us to selfishly retreat into ourselves, by limiting our life to the scope of our own personal interests! To live under the bed! Ridiculously and tragically still :absents of the spirit…

On the other hand, the Gospel is a saint outburst of passionate Love that wants to communicate, that needs “to say”, and that carries along a demand of personal growth, of interior maturity and service to others. «If you say: Enough!, you are dead», saint Augustine says. And saint Josemaria Escrivà also says: «O Lord: let me have temperance and restraint in everything… except in Love!».

«Listen then, if you have ears!». And He also said to them, «Pay attention to what you hear» (Mk 4:23-24). But, what does it mean “to hear”?; what are we to hear? This is the great question we have to ask ourselves. It is an attitude of sincerity towards God that demands to know what we really want to do. And to find it out we must hear: we must pay attention to the hints of God. We have to enter into a dialogue with him to put an end to the “mathematics of measure”: «In the measure you give, so shall you receive and still more will be given to you. For to the one who produces something, more will be given, and from him who does not produce anything, even what he has will be taken away from him» (Mk 4:24-25). God's accrued interests, are unpredictable and extraordinary, so as to stimulate our generosity.

In the Virgin Mary we will find the best example of how to answer God's call.

Whatever is good, especially if very good , we are oriented to desire more of it.  Please stop reading this and experience how you want even more of what I am going to write. (I am doing the same as I prepare to write more.)

The good we have is okay, but if we just could have “one more” that would even be “More better.”  This is simply basic human lust or longing for completion. The sad part for us is that we can never be complete while we remain in this life, but we can come quite close.

Today’s Gospel Reading for the Eucharistic liturgy has to do with what are we to do with what we receive.  Jesus, in this chapter from Mark’s narrative, is using many familiar images to help His hearers to take in all He wishes them to have and take inside.  Seeds scattered, smallest of seeds planted, are pictures of how Jesus is offering Himself and His message to be taken in through the ears and given flesh through the actions flowing outwardly.

Today’s image is a lamp, a light which, when lit, is not meant to be hidden in a tub or under a bed. Simple and clear enough in the hearing, but, what if we want more, a better lamp, light!   Jesus tells His disciples that, what is hidden will be revealed and what is secret will be disclosed. To this we respond, “ah good, God is going to give us more, clearer, enough!”   We will never have enough to complete Him on earth, one cookie, such as yourself, myself, is what He asks us to be and to share and not from under a tub or bed. Two cookies are always better than one and yet the one, limited, seems to be enough for Jesus to share with us.

Early in Mark’s Gospel four fishermen were called out of their boats and away from their nets. These cookies were being formed by their listening to Jesus, to be distributed, shared. They hear many things, are given much and more is coming, but only depending on how they reveal outwardly all they have inwardly received.  Jesus’ relationship with them, and of course, with the readers or listeners to this Gospel,  is oriented for display, for showing up and out and not showing off. His giving is for their living and the more will be given depending on its being lived.

In short, nothing of His, is mine! I am finishing this Reflection, because I do not have anything more or better to say and of course, I wish there were more. He gives the increase, I offer this one cookie-worth for you to munch. If it is good then it is from Him and for His sisters and brothers through you. Go! Let the secret out in the simplicity and crumbliness and goodness of your good-enough life.

GRAND STANDS

"In the measure you give you shall receive, and more besides." Mark 4:24

If we hear God's Word and accept it, we will bear fruit thirty and sixty and a hundredfold (Mk 4:20). Why do some Christians bear great fruit while others produce little fruit?

  • God gives each of us different mission fields, which produce different yields.
  • God gives us different charisms, supernatural gifts of the Holy Spirit, which can significantly increase our yield (1 Cor 12:4ff).
  • Some Christians put the lamp of God's Word (see Ps 119:105) on taller lampstands so as to give light to all. Lampstands are opportunities to proclaim God's Word.

This book and other media are stands for God's Word. Births, deaths, sicknesses, and successes all can be stands for God's Word. A marriage, family, job, school, factory, office, team, or truck can be stands from which the light of God's Word shines.

Those who produce abundant fruit by setting up stands for God's Word are not necessarily the most creative but those more deeply in love with the Lord. If we love someone, we love their word, and that love "impels us" to take every opportunity to proclaim the Lord and His Word (see 2 Cor 5:14).

Love the Lord. Use and make lampstands for God's Word (Mk 4:21). Bear a most abundant harvest.

Prayer: Father, make me like a seed which dies to bear great fruit (Jn 12:24).
Promise: "Who am I, Lord God, and who are the members of my house, that You have brought me to this point?" —2 Sm 7:18
Praise: Tom does not hide his faith either at work or in public. Dozens of people have quietly asked him to pray for their needs.

 Living in the light of God's truth and wisdom

What does the image of light and a lamp tell us about God's kingdom? Lamps in the ancient world served a vital function, much like they do today. They enable people to see and work in the dark and to avoid stumbling or losing their way. The Jews also understood "light" as an expression of the inner beauty, truth, and goodness of God. Many passages from the Old Testament Scriptures describe how God's light guides and helps us grow in our knowledge of him and his truth and wisdom for our lives. In his light we see light ( Psalm 36:9). His word is a lamp that guides our steps (Psalm 119:105).

We are light-bearers of God's truth and love
The truth cannot remain hidden, or suppressed, or destroyed. We might refuse to face the truth or try to suppress it, or destroy it, but the truth will always prevail because it is indestructible. That is why God wants us to know the truth and to stake our lives on it. God's grace (his indwelling presence and power at work in us) and his word of truth enable us to hear, believe, and obey him without fear or reservation. Just as natural light prevails over the darkness around us and enable us to see clearly, so the light of Christ shines in the hearts of all who hear and believe his word. God wants to fill us with his Holy Spirit so that we may shine brightly with the radiance of his truth, love, and goodness.

Jesus called John the Baptist "a burning and shining lamp" (John 5:35) because he bore witness to God's word and pointed others to Jesus, the true Light and Savior of the world. Our call and mission, like John the Baptist, is to be light-bearers of Jesus Christ so that many others may hear and understand the truth of the Gospel (the good news of Jesus Christ)  and be set free from the blindness of sin, ignorance, and deception.

Living in the light brings true freedom and joy
Jesus remarks that nothing can remain hidden or secret. We can try to hide things from others, from ourselves, and from God. How tempting to shut our eyes from the consequences of our sinful ways or bad habits, even when we know what those consequences are. And how tempting to hide them from others and even from God. But, nonetheless, everything is known to God who sees all.

There is great freedom and joy for those who live in God's light and who seek his truth and goodness. Those who listen to God and heed his voice will receive more from him. And they will not lack what they need to live as Christ's disciples. And they will shine as lights that show the wisdom and truth of God's word. Do you know the joy and freedom of living in God's light and truth?

"Lord Jesus, you guide me by the light of your saving truth. Fill my heart and mind with your light and truth and free me from the blindness of sin, ignorance, and deception that I may see your ways clearly and understand your will for my life. May I radiate your light and truth to others in word and deed."

Psalm 132:1-5, 11-14

1 Remember, O LORD, in David's favor, all the hardships he endured;
2 how he swore to the LORD and vowed to the Mighty one of Jacob,
3 "I will not enter my house or get into my bed;
4 I will not give sleep to my eyes or slumber to my eyelids,
5 until I find a place for the LORD, a dwelling place for the Mighty one of Jacob."
11 The LORD swore to David a sure oath from which he will not turn back:  one of the sons of your body  I will set on your throne.
12 If your sons keep my covenant and my testimonies which I shall teach them, their sons also for ever shall sit upon your throne."
13 For the LORD has chosen Zion; he has desired it for his habitation:
14 "This is my resting place for ever; here I will dwell, for I have desired it.

Daily Quote from the early church fathers: Called to shine in the midst of darkness, by Tertullian, 160-225 A.D.

"Why does the Lord call us the light of the world? Why has he compared us to a city on a hill (Matthew 5:14)? Are we not called to shine in the midst of darkness, and stand up high for those most sunk down? If you hide your lamp beneath a bushel (Matthew 5:15; Luke 8:16, 11:33), you will soon notice that you yourself will be in the dark. You will find others bumping into you. So what can you do to illumine the world? Let your faith produce good works. Be a reflection of God's light. The good is not preoccupied with darkness. It rejoices in being seen (John 3:21). It exults over the very pointings which are made at it. Christian modesty not only wishes to be modest, but also it wishes to be beheld as what it actually is." (excerpt from ON THE APPAREL OF WOMEN 2.13)
